I fucking love that the key to victory isn't that Charlie is the Chosen One or has to finally change and become happy, but that he just happens to have the same name as a wizard and refuses to change

ironic how earlier in the series charlie said "I think I died long ago, and you two are my eternal punishment," but in the end it turns out he's pretty much the only person who ISN'T dead

I think Charlie being the way he is actually saved him. If he weren't so grumpy, the demons would have gotten bored with him much sooner and killed/corpse puppeted him. In essence, Charlie played the straight man to all of their horrible jokes. Him being unaware of their true nature helped further cement him in that role. After all, the joke is way funnier when someone else is not in on it.

The realization when the blue and pink unicorns are just walking normally is such a great moment.

It didn't dawn on me until just now that the original Pink and Blue were within walking distance of Charlie when they got possessed. They could've easily met and become genuine friends.

The subversion with the 10,000 years was such a nice detail. The realization that everyone is dead and these two demons have been fucking with Charlie the last living creature was an explanation I was not prepared for. I thought it would just be a funny lol random humor we gave Charlie the unicorn a finale, but it was actually given a real ending

Spoilers: Okay so a very very long time ago Charlie the Unicorn (sorcerer industrialist) created the tower and set up shop in another dimension that the tower opens portals to, but only unicorns named Charlie can enter. He turned Startaur into a wheel and also rounded up a bunch of chaos spirits. The chaos spirits were not powerful on their own, but Charlie trapped them in magical siphons which allowed them to absorb magic from those they killed and become more powerful. He intended to sell them as military weapons or magical slaves, but couldn’t control them and they killed him in his workshop dimension. For some reason Charlie kept one spirit in the real world locked behind a set of doors under the tower. Enough time passed for the world to forget about Charlie, and the purpose of the tower was lost, save for a few vague “ancient texts” A pangolin named Nyx visits the tower and discovers the door. The Order of Tutelary Weasels foolishly open the door, releasing the one trapped spirit, who proceeds to absorb all the magic in the world and topple governments. Norwell the Weasel is killed but later meets a magical coat and the two fall in love. Nyx is unable to forewarn anyone about the spirit and returns to the tower, hoping that turning the wheel on top of it would defeat the spirit. Instead it opens the portal, unleashing a second spirit. The spirits then kill him. The spirits body-hop for 10,000 years until they kill and possess the pink and blue unicorns and meet new Charlie. Meanwhile, the ghost of Nyx learns magic and tries to put people into the portal under the incorrect assumption that the journeyer has to be “sufficiently magic” to enter. The spirits abuse Charlie for some amount of time, taking his kidney, his horn, and his belongings. Nyx turns the wheel into Starfish and sends him to infiltrate one of their musical numbers and earn Charlie’s trust. The spirits decide to kill Charlie by blowing up the moon, but Nyx through Starfish prevents his death. The spirits then take Charlie to the tower, presumably to force him through the portal and make him explode, though this is unclear. Nyx and Starfish stop time to give Charlie magic infusions and they ultimately send him through the portal, where he meets the old Charlie's ghost. Old Charlie uses a device to allow New Charlie to affect the real world. While Old Charlie cautions that positive emotions are necessary to make it function, Charlie’s resentment at being pushed around overpowers the device, destroying the spirits and returning him to the real world, where the spirits’ influence fades. Startaur is returned to his regular form and immediately dies of a heart attack.

Hearing Charlie sing himself after listening to others singing at him for years nearly gave me a perfectly natural heart attack.

So others have probably commented on this, but: Nyx's Journey: -Just wants to know what the hell is going on with a cave, enters it and then all the problems start -Attempts to visit corporate overlord, discovers he completely ignored the warning out of convenience -Visits underwater kingdom that acts incredibly friendly and pleasant but sold out the rest of the world for a 10 year reprieve -Meets egotistical space bugs convinced they're the true rulers of the world but are still powerless Charlie's Journey: -Just wants to know what the hell is going on with a cave, enters it and then all the problems start -Attempts to visit banana king, told that he IS the banana king and encouraged to just completely ignore all his problems to make life easier -Visits underwater RUINS in the 'future' where everybody sings to him how much they love him but ultimately accomplish nothing -Meets egotistical space bug convinced it's a god but is still ultimately powerless The previous episodes were the demons leading Charlie through a satire making fun of the ineffectuality of all the people who supposedly opposed them.

'I think I found a loophole in my security system' I love how they imply that Charlie survived not due to the magic Starfish gave him but due to a technicality in the portals security measures

That upsetting bat has been there for 10,000 years.

If you pay special attention, every character possessed by the demons has a similar speech pattern. They were all written to talk the same way.

This finale puts every other video of charlie the unicorn into such a horrifying context, the world surrounding charlie, while seemingly vibrant and full of life has slowly been drained of it by two all powerful demons, everyone that Charlie has likely ever met was dead. And charlie may be one of the last few living sentient creatures in his world

I would never imagine that Charlie’s story could be wrapped up in a way that tied together all the surreal mischief from previous episodes into a coherent narrative, but there you have it. And good music to boot. What a masterpiece.

pink and blue saying " Charlie Chaarlie Chaarlie Charliee " all makes so much more sense now like hearing that name triggers them. Because it who enslaved them, probably why they always tortured him but not fully take over him like the rest. This was legit the best movie I've seen all year. Legit a full circle life changing film, can't wait too tell my friends about this so they can check it out.. such a full circle event

32:24 feels like the most terrifying part the cubes kill so effortlessly, one instant you're standing there and the next you're dead and your body is a corpse puppet.

It's almost like "Everyone is smiling but you've got a frown" means that Charlie didn't give in. He didn't give up and just pretend everything was fine. He was true to himself, and while he may be left out, it's from fake happiness, and he conquered it.

The way blue says "your flying" out of confusion right before they're possessed is so chilling to me they were so scared

It was actually terrifying and sad to see the unicorns as their normal selves

I'm impressed how the style and tone has stayed consistent all these years

So much of youtube owes so much to this series - its a sacred part of internet history. And here it is, getting buried by the algorithm. What a world.

You're really a one-of-a-kind creator on this platform. I'm in love with how this balances the surreal absurdity that this series is known for with some really cool worldbuilding and story twists and themes. Those silly webtoons from all those years ago didn't even necessitate something this great so I'm so glad you decided to go for it anyway. Really can't say enough good things about this!

"Is this blood also mine?" That is the EXACT question I had when that happened. It's amazing how consistent the insanity of this show's logic is.

This was a shockingly story rich ending to a series otherwise known exclusively for its whimsical nature and off the walls humor, and I loved every second of it. The realization that the B plot of this finale was actually far in the past was so cool to me, and seeing Charlie become a hero of sorts against his own will and giving reasoning and structure to the madness we’ve been witnessing throughout this whole series was very satisfying. As someone who has been following this story since I was in elementary school, seeing its conclusion after all these years gave me a very unique feeling of nostalgia that I’m not sure I’ll ever experience again. Thank you for the wonderful series, Jason!

(Spoilers) Oh my god I just realized that the reason Nyx blew up was because he wasn’t a Unicorn named Charlie not because he didn’t have magic. That’s such a nice detail I love this finale so much.

The fear and confusion when Blue said "You're flying" and "Who are you" was genuinely pretty upsetting. What is it with Filmcow and making post apocalyptic worlds with the only few lifeforms being talking animals?

I love the detail that when the two disappear, all the things they had magic influence on stop being magic, and start being normal again after 10,000 years. The bricks and walls in the temples crumble, the giant iron Z starts rusting, the underwater door begins floating away into the waves that were previously not visible underwater. The grip they had is finally released.

Charlie's depression and anger saved the day in the end. It beat the Unicorns' cynical joy because unlike them, Charlie is real and embraces his emotions while his tormentors thrive on random silliness and chaos purely for the lulz. What a great ending. Thanks for all the fun.

Wow, Starfish only had 3 seconds with Charlie before he died of a peaceful natural heart attack and turned into a ghost

Utterly brilliant conclusion. Charlie defeats the evil by doing the complete opposite of what they try to trick him with, the world is cleansed of their mess and he reunites with his true love. Could not have been wrapped up better.

It actually makes me incredibly sad that Lolz and Roffle literally died moments before meeting Charlie, and he never really knew the both of them, and he's was only acquainted with walking corpses.

Interesting to see why pink and blue specifically harrassed and tortured charlie all this time instead of just killing him and turning him into a puppet. The idea that it was a twisted payback for being enslaved by charlie the magical unicorn. Charlie the magician was the mayor sluv of the demon cubes. Wonderful justification.

Seeing Z, Candy Mountain, the Banana King's Temple and everything else start to fall apart with age was oddly melancholic.

"I'm told the issue is inside my head, as they make a world that is withered and dead." That's gonna be my favorite line of the entire series I think.

I love how Startaur's ghost had to clarify he had suffered a perfectly natural heart-attack; otherwise Charlie might get worried about the demons still causing mischief...

So...: * Charlie the Unicorn (the magician) wanted a lot of money. Created a way to siphon the magical energy out of demons to use as a weapon, or for labor in general. * Two demons escaped and stole his magic, puppeteering a couple unicorn corpses around. EDIT: They were alive at first, not corpses. * They meet Charlie (non-magician) and do everything we see. They created almost everything weird and magical in that period * Charlie (non-magician) enters that realm, where his magic is used to trap the demons. * Once the demons are trapped, everything they created begins to fall apart without their magic sustaining those things

I still cant believe the weasels from an ad almost 10 years ago finally became plot relevant near the finale.

My sister introduced me to Charlie the Unicorn. She passed a few years ago, but she would have loved this. And I love it too. This was a nice treat after a shitty year.

To think if pink and blue hadn't been possessed by the cubes they would have eventually stumbled across Charlie as their regular selves.

I love that instead of going for the obvious “oh he’s alt universe Charlie” it’s just “no it’s just he has the same name and the security system therefore assumed it was the same guy”. Brilliant lmao

It is really impressive that Jason and everyone else at Filmcow managed to create legitimately interesting lore and backstory for this series without ruining the insanity that made it good in the first place.

A word about the "Everyone is Smiling" song sung by the dolphin: This song is essentially made up of all the things you *shouldn't* say to someone with mental health issues, combined with all the things you'd hear from an emotional manipulator. Starting with "all of your thoughts and feelings are wrong," and "the problem is inside your head," (gaslighting) - "happiness is easy and quick to obtain, sadness is just failure by some other name" - it seems silly when a wigged dolphin is singing these things to a unicorn, but human beings say these kinds of things to other human beings all the time in their lowest moments. The "I don't know how to deal with you when *you're like this* " - putting the onus on the person suffering - is such a devastating thing to say to someone in that position. Really well done FilmCow.

I like in the end Charlie's done having people tell him what to do and feel and can finally harness his frustration about the situation to change it

Was I the only one who found the two unicorns getting possessed the first time around really sad and disturbing? It just... They were so wholesome and cute.

The fact that you ended the series with Charlie singing is fantastic. He’s been sung at for and tormented for years and it was a really great way for him to get the final word. It was very touching actually. It really felt like the whole series was leading up to this finale and those plot twists were pretty mind blowing. It makes me want to rewatch the series with new context. The montage of the different places from all of the episodes made me tear up a bit, because I had watched, and endlessly quoted, Charlie the Unicorn with my friend since I elementary school. I won’t lie, it’s bittersweet to see such a fun series come to a close, but you couldn’t have given these characters a better send off. Watching this, you can really feel the time and effort you put forth, and it doesn’t go unseen. I can’t wait to see the goofs and gaffs that come next.

Never expected this series turn into such an excellent story-telling adventure!

You know despite everything, It’s still nice to see that Norwell and his coat husband are still together after all this time.

Anyone notice how literally no one listens to Charlie? Nyx, Startaur and Charlie the Sorcerer never explained to him anything that was going on. I think the saddest part is that he literally has no idea that he saved the world.

Thank you for making this wonderful series. It truly has meant a lot to me because back in 2009, I got a kidney transplant and the first episode with the saying: "They took my frickin' kidney!" brought me so much joy while I was recovering.

I think there’s also a tragedy with Starfish. He sacrificed his life by exploding on the moon and letting Charlie wish on him to keep him safe. He survives but is clearly in pain every time they meet, and gives him magic to prepare him to defeat the demons. He lets Nux turn him into a wheel of meat to complete their mission. Then, finally, when it’s all done, he appears to Charlie with the hope of finally being able to at least be companions, only to die by heart attack. Like, all this time, he’s loved Charlie from afar and always prioritized Charlie’s well-being over his own, and even when the fight is over, he dies before they can even hang out. And even then, he’s still not bitter about it in the least; he takes all of the obstacles in stride, and is fine with watching Charlie from afar. There’s no entitlement to Charlie’s affection behind his actions because he knows he’s probably not gonna make it. He just genuinely cares about Charlie and wants him to survive.

...so, does charlie teh unicron get a finale now? and will they ever find some way to deal with the grand slamwich?

With the revelation that all of the singing creatures are just puppets of Pink and Blue, it puts the Dolphin's song in a different light. The Dolphin's song is the only one in the series that's a downright personal attack on Charlie. Maybe Pink and Blue were growing bored and frustrated with Charlie, so they were being more openly hostile towards him.

This marks the end of an era on the Internet. Thanks so much for everything you've done Filmcow. Between this and TeamFourStar's DBZ Abridged ending, really feels like the end of my childhood

When Charlie told the sorcerer that he was also named Charlie, the sorcerer said he found a loophole in his security system. The system would only allow Charlie the unicorn to enter unharmed. While the magic probably helped, in the end it was blind luck that Charlie succeeded. If he was named John he would be dead and failed

One thing that I'm not sure a lot of people have picked up on is that Nyx and Charlie are almost like kindered spirits, despite the fact that they hardly interact. But most of the time they are just kind of dragged along by outside forces and they just kind of acquiesce to the two very different kinds of insanity around them on the two opposing sides. Charlie is plagued by forces of chaos that just wish to screw with him, and Nyx is constantly disappointed and let down by the uselessness, greed, incompetency and bureaucracy of those he seeks help from that just sit back and let the world die without putting up much of a real fight or caring that much. It's two different types of the same deal they have to put up with, and their destinies finally intersect at the single point that someone finally speaks to Charlie like a real person for once, and gives him the one thing he never had but always wanted: An answer. I feel that if it were not for this brief time that someone finally treated Charlie as an equal and talked TO him rather than talked AT him, then he wouldn't have had found the gumption to finally allow himself to express the frustration and anger that ultimately saved him. As up to this point, both Nyx and Charlie deal with everything by just giving in and letting things happen. I think in a small way Nyx, being able to relate to Charlie, gave him the encouragement to finally just stand up for himself for once. A lesson that Nyx had never been able to learn, but passed onto Charlie before it was too late for him.

I'm glad Charlie didn't have to be happy to fix things. The Chaos Spirits were constantly telling him that his problem was his attitude but that was just gaslighting any time he actually gave their shenanigans a go they'd go out of their way to make him miserable. The problem was never him and this ending showed that.

"Yes it's true, I'm a corpse-puppet. It's gross, but electable." How amazingly topical.

I love that the Starfish is the first character that Charlie has come around to actually enjoy seeing, and it took a life saving sacrifice, and an undying love that constantly showers him with literal magical gifts.

Hey Jason, sorry to hear about Luca, I remember you talking about the cancer in another video. The finale was a nice farewell gift to your cat. Thank you for the laughs Jason and Luca

I'm probably thinking too much into this- But the lyrics "Everyone's smiling but you've got a frown" really stick out to me considering the ending. Cause everyone who *was* smiling was probably a possessed flesh puppet controlled by demons, and it really highlights that Charlie *isn't* possessed. He's himself. And like, being himself was what allowed for the 10,000 year long nightmare to finally end. The very thing the demons constantly criticized Charlie for was what became their downfall.

You couldn’t have made a more interesting and thought provoking finale. It still kept the random and weird charm the series has been known for, 16 years later, but you also made Charlie’s development so interesting and how much it was relatable with Nyx for him. Charlie deciding to not be happy and express who he was, along with the somber music panning across all the iconic milestones he’d visited… just exceptional

I think Charlie is the most passive protagonist of all time.

At 31:46, its truly haunting to see that blue and pink were just once normal unicorns. The fear in blue's voice seeing that their friend has turned into something else is chilling.

Why is it genuinely upsetting to know that Blue and Pink have been dead this whole time?? I’m sad now.

The fact that pink and blue were actually normal unicorns at one point is pretty sad to think about and it's even more sad seeing blue's reaction to his friend being possessed before dying himself, was really hoping they could have lived and stuck with charlie afterwards since he ended up caring for them

my favorite part about this is the demons have clearly just given up on even trying to create some kind of narrative coherence to their torments

My aunt loved this series. She showed it to me when I was just a kid. Some of the best memories I have with her are smiling and laughing at this amazing series. However, she suffered from depression and anxiety. Because of this she unfortunately decided to end her life early. I wish she could’ve seen the end of this story, but whenever I watch it, I can still imagine her smiling face. Rest In Peace Aunt Tonya, I love you 💙

Startaur and his undying yet fleetingly short lived love for charlie is the real mvp. Preparing and endowing a non the wiser charlie with the mystical powers he would need to defeat the demon cube while he himself had to endure being trapped in different bodies, being blown up on the moon and acting outside of space and time. Only to meet an untimely demise once the mission had been completed. To StarTaur! 🍻

Two things amaze me about Jason Steele: 1. Despite his incredible Internet success in the aughts of helping to invent "lolz random" comedy, he often just makes the shit he likes to make. Oftentimes, when he wants to revisit old characters they end up in some sort of meta-absurdist drama that shows off his growth as a storyteller instead of fulfilling fan service. 2. He's still so damn funny.

Something I noticed that I don’t think anyone has pointed out. At the start of its song, the dolphin thing says Charlie three times and Charlie replies “That’s me”. And when the pink and blue unicorns meet Charlie for the first time they say his name three times and Charlie replies “That’s me”. Don’t know if it means anything, but it’s a cool connection,

When I first saw Charlie the Unicorn as a child it terrified me beyond belief, glad to know they were chaos demons tormenting him the whole time, really puts the trauma into perspective and makes me feel better about it in an odd way

And so, after the demons' toying and torment was over, those who were puppets for their amusement can finally rest. Even though a bit bittersweet, still a nice ending for an unforgettable series.

It feels strange to say it, but this truly marks the end of an era. Charlie the Unicorn was the first video I ever saw on RU-vid over a decade ago. Thank you SecretAgentBob for all of the animations and laughter you've brought to us over the years. Charlie the Unicorn, Llamas with Hats, The Cloak, Marshmallow People, The Interview, Mittens, KitKat, Bino, Spatula Madness, etc. You really are one of the old greats of RU-vid. One of the few creators that has stood the test of time.

Jason, this is a masterpiece. It has so many levels of meaning and manages to be both absurdist humor, psychological examination and an intensely political work at the same time. There are very few people in the world who could do this and you deserve immense amounts of respect for it.

Charlie the Unicorn is the only person to ever sing to Charlie without exploding.

I was 13 when I first saw Charlie the Unicorn, I'm now 25. It's really been an anchor in a lot of ways, especially for me as an autistic - it made socialising in my teen years more accessible. A lot of us autistics do this thing called delayed echolalia where we socialise by repeating things we've heard before, like lines from movies. Quoting Charlie the Unicorn helped me create a sense of understanding and shared interest where I might otherwise have struggled to, and that means a lot to me. Seeing it all come to an end is weird but spectacular, thanks for everything.

So much media is about overcoming cynicism and learning to feel joy. It's refreshing to see the alternative theme explored. Cynicism can be a useful tool. Charlie is able to see through the bullshit and determine what's real and what's really valuable, and ultimately that gives him the power to destroy the evil that uses false sincerity as a weapon.
