By now most of us know that Alexander Colbourne is the perfect man for Charlotte Heywood. Alexander and Charlotte compliment and complete each other beautifully. Fate has a strange and surprising way of guiding us along on our journey. Who would have guessed that S1 would have ended as it did or that the scriptwriter and casting crew would have been forced to take an entirely different and unfamiliar path-which, in my opinion, has led to a far more interesting and rewarding destination? As fate would have it, Charlotte's romance with Sidney Parker and his betrayal in order to marry the wealthy Eliza Campion (who had done the same thing to him a few years earlier) better prepared Charlotte for the slightly older, more experienced, and wiser Alexander Colbourne who would be attracted to and fall in love with her. Not long into S2, it becomes clear that both Charlotte and Colbourne are surprised and thrown off kilter by their romantic attraction to each other. She and he had both sworn off love and marriage after falling in love and then being betrayed. At the end of S2, we're left wondering why exactly did Colbourne force Charlotte to leave her governess position, and why did Charlotte not allow Colbourne to finish whatever he started to say to her in the Parker home. All we do know is that she and he made a choice, and now they are both unhappy with their lives. We know what Charlotte wants, but what does Colbourne want? He's confusing us. Ah! The look on Alexander Colbourne's face when he sees Charlotte again in S3 makes it quite clear that Colbourne now knows exactly what he wants. The looming questions for S3 are-Can he still get her? If so, how? So, I am definitely looking forward to Season 3. For anyone who hasn't been able to put enough of the pieces together and is still trying to make sense of Charlotte and Colbourne's love story, here is a guide. Like Charlotte Heywood, Alexander Colbourne is a compelling character. Obviously, Colbourne is not pining for his dead wife who married him for his money, and then continued her love affair with Lennox after she married Colbourne. Marrying solely for financial security was the norm, even during the time in which Jane Austen lived. Apparently, Lucy and Lennox were genuinely in love with each other-but, unlike Colbourne, Lennox was not a wealthy man. So, she chose to marry Alexander Colbourne-which explains why Lennox told Charlotte that Colbourne stole Lucy from him. Nevertheless, Colbourne does deeply regret having spoken so harshly to Lucy when he discovered her infidelity and that she was pregnant with Lennox's child. He believes that what he said to Lucy was so damaging that it destroyed her will to live. So, he feels responsible for her death and for Leo not having a mother. Colbourne's compassionate heart and strong conscience have not allowed him to forgive himself-even after all these years. In S2 we see how compassionately Colbourne treats his horse and his dog, and how he tries to shield his daughter and his niece-and now Charlotte-from himself. Colbourne is apparently afraid of ever destroying anyone again, so he puts up barriers between himself and anyone that he loves. Charlotte helped Colbourne to begin tearing down those barriers that separate him from the people that he loves. But now Charlotte is one of those people-so we see Colbourne as he struggles with his internal conflict between his desire to have Charlotte and his desire to protect her from himself. Interestingly, it is not until Colonel Lennox tells Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him that he realizes that she is indeed in love with him, and therefore she needs to be protected from him. Because Charlotte is so unique-she is neither meek nor submissive-Colbourne hadn't noticed the outward signs of her feelings towards him. During the time that Jane Austen wrote, men who did not intend to marry often wore a signet ring (engraved with their initials) on the pinky of their left hand-just as Alexander Colbourne does. Colbourne often twists the signet ring that he wears on his left hand and appears to be thinking. My guess is that is yet another reason why he chose to dismiss Charlotte. Colbourne knows that he is in love with Charlotte, and it is obvious that he desires her. The way he kisses her makes that quite clear. After Colonel Lennox told Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him, Colbourne realized that, as her employer she might submit to his desires because he is in a position of authority over her. Now that he knows how he feels about her and how she feels about him, allowing Charlotte to remain his subordinate would have been highly unethical. Since Colbourne-unlike Lennox-is a man of integrity, he could not bring himself to allow her to continue to be his subordinate, and therefore subject to his will. That's why he forces Charlotte to leave, even after she acknowledges that she was a willing participant during their romantic moments. So, since Alexander Colbourne is a man of integrity, he knew he had to let Charlotte go-even though he obviously wants her. Colbourne went to the Parkers' home to ask her to return because Augusta begged him to do so, not because he believed that was the right thing to do. (Colbourne told Augusta that she doesn't understand-which, of course, is true. Augusta doesn't know that her uncle is in love with Charlotte and that Charlotte is in love with him.) Colbourne did not object to what Charlotte said because he knew that she made the right decision, even though she made that decision because she believes that she means nothing to him. Of course, that is not true. This is a man who clearly is deeply in love with Charlotte. When Colbourne goes to see Charlotte with the intention of asking her to return, Charlotte also makes the right decision. Sadly, at the end of Season 2, we were left with two people who are deeply in love with each other-and absolutely miserable because of the choice they had to make. The good news is-Season 3 is yet to come and now they both know they are in love and unhappy without the other person.

Sidney Parker did not betray Charlotte. In fact, he did the very thing that she had nagged him to do, all through S1, without knowing the facts! She wanted him to do more for his idiot, vainglorious brother, Tom. A man who never paid his bills, continued spending and let his workers and their families starve/get injured! If she was so smart, as the person sorting out Tom's bills, why didn't she know that he was in a grave financial situation? Sidney was heartbroken, to have to give up Charlotte! Charlotte has forgotten Sidney after lighting one candle and seeing the size of AC's house and finding out that he's a widower, when she takes the girls home, in the Parker's coach! She, also, has a short memory. She told her sister that the last time she'd danced, in Sanditon, was with Sidney! Well, the last time she danced, with Sidney, was in London! She danced, with various tradesmen and James Stringer, the last time she danced, in Sanditon! 🤔
@olivinarichmond6969
@olivinarichmond6969 Год назад
Charlotte wants a husband. Her father can no longer afford to keep her. As Allison says, they are poor - wretchedly so! AC is almost twice her age and has not had a woman in, at least, 10yrs! She spends more time pursuing him, than errant Leo! She goes back to his house, at night and unchaperoned, SHE holds his hand - first - and allows him to kiss her! She, also, lets him kiss her, in front of his housekeeper. They are not in a relationship and he has not proposed to her. She had, also, gone to the army camp. In that era, these are the actions of a loose woman! He takes advantage of his position! It was just as bad, in that era, as it is today. Certainly, no gentleman would do it! The first kiss is not long after Mrs Wheatley wins a bet, that Charlotte would not last out the week! Augusta is smarter/better educated, than Charlotte. The children are more mature than Colbourne. Part of his attraction to Charlotte is his enmity with/jealousy of Lennox, when he finds out that Lennox has befriended Charlotte! He's not going to lose to Lennox a second time! Even Lennox didn't try to kiss Charlotte BEFORE proposing to her! AC thinks nothing of her reputation! He disrespects her! He has nothing in common with her, except for a dislike of London! He hates women being educated/working, dancing, socialising and the development of Sanditon! He thinks that the girls only need discipline and the necessary skills to be marriage fodder! She is well below him on the social scale, which, he seems to think, gives him the right to be 'free', with her! He knows that Lennox likes to needle him and he is VERY easily needled! Like an immature, young boy! Charlotte is, rightly, angry and upset, when he sacks her, only come to Trafalgar House because Augusta sent him and tells her that 'the house' misses her, already! He HAS disrespected her - but she only has herself to blame, really! Still, desperate to marry, she gets engaged to Daddy's choice, Ralph Starling! She'll get a second bite of the cherry, in S3. Unlike with handsome Sidney, she has no competition for AC! She'll use Ralph to make AC jealous, as she used James Stringer, to make Sidney jealous, in S1! 😏
@olivinarichmond6969
@olivinarichmond6969 Год назад
We don't know that Lucy married AC for money. He just says that they married young, shortly after he inherited his title. He would have wanted/needed an heir. Despite being married for ©10yrs, before Leo was born, they were childless. It is more likely that Lennox met Lucy in London. He is not educated/probably, wasn't from her social group, in his youth. Colbourne would not have married beneath himself. Lennox was a Captain, when he met Lucy. Lucy and AC, probably, grew apart. Did they ever have a physical relationship? She liked socialising, in London, he didn't. She stayed in London because she was pregnant, after her affair, with Lennox. AC, eventually, went to London, to find out why she hadn't come home, at the end of the season. AC's staff at home and in London, would know that Leo wasn't his child. She would have been treated as a pariah. AC would have, also, looked bad, which is, probably, why he becomes a hermit! He is VERY proud/likes to be in control/obeyed! He, obviously, upset Lucy, who was in a fragile state, after childbirth and humiliation! She 'went out into the rain' (like Lady Caroline Lamb, in the film 'Lamb') and died! Lennox didn't know about the pregnancy/had, probably, been recalled to army duties! AC is, then, lost in self-pity/self-flagellation, for 10yrs! It's odd that both SP and AC had been loveless for TEN YEARS before meeting CH !!! How ridiculous is that? Do they really need to be THAT desperate to want her? I think that the writers, also, disrespect our heroine! 🤣🤣🤣 Men of AC's class would wear a signet ring, with the family crest on, not their initials. Sidney Parker NEVER wore a signet ring! So, goodness knows where that came from!!! (Being upper middle class, SP's, supposed, ring has initials on.) Another error, in the plot! Also, Sidney's agent, in Antigua wrote the letter to Tom around the time of Sidney's funeral, at the same time as the trunk was addressed. The bed sheets were still bloody. So, it must have been a quick burial. The letter would have travelled, to England, on the same ship as the trunk! So, how do the Parkers get the agents letter months before the trunk arrives??? Ships took 4-6wks to travel between England and the West Indies, in good weather, then. So, SP would have been dead for, at least, a month, by the time the Parkers found out - 6 mths after Esther and Babington's wedding. SP must have left, for the court case, in Antigua, about 3-4 mths, after their wedding (© 2-3 mths after his own wedding). It's 3 mths, after SP's death is known to the Parkers, that CH returns to Sanditon, with Allison. So, SP has, then, been dead for 4mths! Plenty of time for the agent's letter AND the trunk to have arrived at Sanditon!!! Why didn't his belongings go to his wife, Eliza? Why didn't the Parkers ask Eliza why SP was in Antigua? They WERE in contact with her! She could even be pregnant! We don't know, as she isn't mentioned, apart from in financial terms - typical Tom! After they get the agent's letter but not, oddly, the trunk, Tom writes to the agent for more information! Later, Georgiana says that she will write to her contacts, in Antigua. Yet, she gets a reply before Tom and very soon after sending her letter! Certainly, weeks/months before the trunk arrives, in Ep 6! It must have gone on the 'Grand Tour'! 🤣🤣 Up until Mary's patience runs out, with, awful, idiot Tom, only Mary, Allison and Babington appear to know that SP and CH had ever been a couple, albeit for a day - plus 1wk of separation! Who writes this stuff? 😏

During the time that Jane Austen lived and wrote, the late 18th and early 19th century, English gentlemen frequently wore a signet ring (like the one Alexander wears) on the pinky finger of their left hand to indicate that they did not intend to marry. While I am guessing that is the intended significance Sanditon's writers expect the audience to attach to Alexander's signet ring, I should also point out that this particular accessory also carried enormous cultural and historical significance as well. "Traditionally, signet rings were worn on the pinky finger and used by gentlemen, particularly gentlemen involved with business or politics, as a seal to sign important documents. Engraved with the wearers family crest, the signet ring would be dipped into hot wax before being used to print a signature."
@marshazeidman4692
@marshazeidman4692 2 года назад
I think Sidney Parker's signet ring had initials on his. Tom put it on his left little finger. Alexander's ring was plain, no initials or embossing on it.
@Jean-wk7on
@Jean-wk7on 2 года назад
@@marshazeidman4692 Yes, Marsha. Sidney's ring-which his brother, Tom, now wears-does have initials printed on it. If you have the ability to return to the scene where Alexander and Charlotte are sitting together as he tells her who Leonora's biological father is, look closely at Alexander's left hand (as the camera moves in on it). You will clearly see that the ring Alexander is wearing on the pinky finger of his left hand is indeed a signet ring, engraved with letters on it, most likely his initials since that was the custom of the time.
@marshazeidman4692
@marshazeidman4692 2 года назад
@Jean. Thanks, Jean. I was looking at the ring when Xander gave the blue flowers to Charlotte at the picnic. He gave them to her with his left hand.

By this time men, usually, had a fob, hanging from their waistcoats, for wax seals. The wax would have been melted and too thick for a ring, which only has shallow engraving. The pharaohs/religious leaders used them for seals on documents but they would not have had fine engraving, on theirs and they could be bigger/on a bigger finger. Signet rings were worn on the little/pinkie finger. It doesn't mean that they have no intention to marry. The Royal family wear them. Also, women wear them. As they were a signature, they would be destroyed, after death.
@Jean-wk7on
@Jean-wk7on Год назад
@@olivinarichmond6969 Hi, Olivina. Take a look at the historical records for that time period. (1) During that time period, a young lady would never have worn a signet ring, and that would have been true even throughout the 19th century. (2) Keep in mind, we are talking about European and English society, not another time in another place. (3) I wrote "frequently wore" not always wore. (4) Apparently, you are confusing societies and traditions and social classes. For example, during Austen's time in British society, rings were preserved and passed down as heirlooms. (Some of those signet rings from prominent families are in existence even today and can be seen in museums.) And, yes, the engraving was such that they were still being used to stamp documents. Incidentally, even during Jane Austen's time, women, in general, didn't exist as legal entities. When a woman married her legal existence automatically transferred to her husband, so she wasn't signing anything. (5) You would benefit by doing more reading, and make sure you are reading reputable sources.

It would be " anti Jane Austen" if the two don't get together. In all her stories the main characters ALWAYS end up together. In fact, this story has elements of "Pride and Predudice" and even "Sence and Sensibility", therefore, the writers followed Austen's style so Charlotte and Zander will eventually get back together. The reveal and finding out how is going to be the basis of the 3rd season.😔🤔😊😄😙

@Goose Monkey Cannot agree with you and do not. None of her other novels had such an ending. Neither did she ever write a book that would have had to be a trilogy, to cover three ‘seasons’! It is a lovely period drama, has flavours of Jane Austen but that is all. Had the drama finished after the eight episodes, or even ten, with Sidney and Charlotte marrying, then yes it could have been attributed to the novelist. Now as I have said before, it would have been better to entitle it, ‘ The Adventures of Charlotte Heywood’.
