Charlotte, North Carolina: The GOOD and the BAD

For this drive, I entered the city of Charlotte from the north end of town, which is the worst end of town. As I came down Tyron Street, there was a noticeable homeless encampment on the outskirts of town, which we’ll revisit later. But this was only one of a few sore spots in the downtown Charlotte area. It was a beautiful day for a drive - mid morning on a crisp autumn day. It was Saturday, October 17 at 11 am.
Now, downtown Charlotte can be broken up into two distinct areas - South End, and Uptown, which is Charlotte’s original downtown area. We’re going to begin on South End and then cross the highway into downtown and check that part of the city out.
So this is Charlotte’s South End. Now this part of town is all the jam for all the up and coming younger and successful folks. They call this Historic South End. It was kinda forgotten about with a bunch of abandoned factories, but the city ran the light rail down this way which renewed interest and NOW look at the place. It’s all modern condos and expensive places to shop and dine and drink. This is actually the fastest growing neighborhood in the COUNTRY for apartment growth. This is also the second-most expensive zip code in the whole state of North Carolina for apartment renters, where it’s about $1,400 a month for an apartment.
People on the west coast and the northeast are like I WISH my apartment was $1,400 a month. I pay three times that and I have bums and druggies all over.
Charlotte spent $2 billion bucks on making this place all fancy, and there’s another billion set aside for more. It’s really revitalized the whole Charlotte downtown region in general. Most of the people who live here are wealthier professionals, and most of the tourists who come to Charlotte wind up making their way down to this part of town by the end of their stay.
Anyways, this is South End. Then we’ll cross the highway into the very DIFFERENT part of Charlotte, uptown.
As we cross the highway back into downtown proper, you’ll notice a big difference. This is the city center for all the business happenings in the Queen City. There’s a huge banking industry here - New York City is the nation’s banking capital, but Charlotte is the country’s second biggest banking hub, just ahead of even San Francisco. There’s also some technology here and other leading industries. Downtown has an arena where the NBA’s Hornets play, and is also home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.
Charlotte has close to 900,000 people, which is nearly twice that of Atlanta. But Charlotte isn’t even in the top 100 when it comes to crime. It’s a very safe and clean downtown, for the most part, but when there’s trouble, folks do riot from time to time. I spotted security guards and police at many bank doors or hotel entrances, almost guarding against any looming trouble that might surface.
Downtown, or Uptown as Charlotte refers to it, is home to a majority of the hotels, too. And for, like ever, THIS was the hub for entertainment. All the bars and restaurants were here, but then when South End sprang up, just about all the business moved two miles south to take advantage of the explosive growth and wealth THERE. Now, downtown is really uninspiring. You have to walk blocks to find a place to get a drink or eat. While the South End is where mostly white folks congregate, in uptown, it’s mostly the black community that gathers at night. Many of the groups that come to this part of downtown smoke pot in their cars and then wander around downtown at night or stand around in large groups. In fact, walking around uptown at night, you can’t help but notice the lingering smell of weed everywhere. Our Uber driver’s car - or our Uber driver’s clothes, totally smelled like weed. There are also pockets of homeless folks on benches and on sidewalks in this part of town. But they aren’t allowed to pitch tents downtown proper.
Uptown’s big saving grace was supposed to be the Epicenter, a multi tiered entertainment venue with bars and restaurants and shopping right smack dab in the middle of Uptown. But only after about 10 years, most of the Epicenter is closed now, perhaps for good. You can see how dead it is now. Look at the list of closed businesses here. That’s because the police were constantly called here, and there were too many shootings. No one knows what’s going to become of the Epicenter, but some speculate it may be turned into an outdoor mall type destination.
Anyways, this is Uptown. Here’s a tour.
So as we leave Uptown, and the downtown Charlotte area, we get another quick glimpse of the homeless encampment on the far north side of downtown. But overall, downtown Charlotte is a very clean and safe area. It’s just that at night, in Uptown, not only is there not much to do, there’s a lingering sense that you can’t let your guard down. And that’s a shame.

Let me explain the "Uptown" moniker. This area is literally at a higher elevation than the neighborhoods that surround it. (These neighborhoods include South End, Wilmore, Elizabeth, and Tryon Hills.) So when you are in one of these neighborhoods, you go up the hill to Uptown.

Nick, the homeless encampents were there because they lost their jobs during the heart of the pandemic and the homeless shelter was being redone, but it's probably redone now and the Charlotte City Economy has mostly reopened, so the homeless may have drastically decreased since the last time you were in Charlotte.

My city, love Charlotte, uptown still has a lot of great spots but I go during the day and use the scooters and bikes 😊 The homeless issue is bad right at the North part of uptown bc the homeless shelter is getting redone and they're making the homeless go outside and distance in tents. However they're all up on each other, not distancing, better to have them in the shelters than on the street!

South End - it's actually more expensive than you think. That $1,400 apartment price? That's for a 500 sq ft studio. 1- and 2-bedroom units are well over $2,000 a month. The EpiCentre is not going away. The open mall idea floated in this video is more likely to happen to the Transportation Center next door. That's the current hub for the city buses. The city/state/Feds are beginning to build a new transportation hub on the west side of Uptown, about 4 blocks from the Panthers stadium. This hub will be the new Amtrack station as well as a rebuilt Greyhound station (the current one is close to this new hub). It is believed the current Greyhound station will be converted into the new home for the city buses, leaving the current facility to be redeveloped.

I lived in Charlotte from 1986-2001. Spent much of my time in Matthews. The only thing I can say about my time there is that the area was, and still is, very clean and pretty but I never felt like I was part of it. I attribute much of that to being a transplant from Chicago, and not being a native of the area. I never quite fit in. The city exploded in the 1990’s and continues to grow. It’s claim to growth can be attributed to the city being a banking hub. Many large banking headquarters are located there: Bank of America, Wachovia, First Union, etc. I still friends and some family in the area. You are right that the suburbs now cross the state line in the south. It’s sister city to the south, Jacksonville never enjoyed the expansion and growth that Charlotte has. Both cities incorporated into their counties and host major NFL teams, but Charlotte capitalized on its merits and grew. Jacksonville on the other hand has just shriveled up like a boil for thirty years. One of things I remember about the area was the ridiculous Church on Hwy 51, Calvary. Just a huge Church that seemed so out of place and vain.

Charlotte’s UPTOWN has always been that. The whole downtown thing comes from people from other areas. My mom grew up in Charlotte in and just outside of UPTOWN. In the 1930’s. My grandparents called it UPTOWN born in the 1890’s. Great grandma not born in Charlotte , but lived most of her life here. Yep UPTOWN. Why uptown. Because from outside of UPTOWN , you had to go up to get there.

Nick allot of what you're saying isn't correct about uptown. Here's my rebuttal as an active resident and Uber driver here for three past 8 years: You filmed this during the pandemic, and so your account of Uptown isn't accurate. You saw it during recovery from pandemic shutdown which forced many businesses to close. Under normal non pandemic conditions, uptown is a bustling melting pot and everyone frequents the bars and restaurants there, in South End, Plaza Midwood and all other nearby areas. I will agree with you that Uptown is largely uninspired, even though it's the banking capital of the United States, with Bank of America and Wells Fargo now calling Charlotte home for their headquarters and forcing many of their employees to relocate here after years of flying in every week from bigger cities. South End today is no different than it's been since I moved here 8 years ago, and Uptown's night scene is the way you saw it-- currently largely populated by blacks only because of the pandemic which resulted in the local shelters here being closed and forced countless thousands of people (largely our black community) to be evicted or displaced, living on the streets and sleeping in tent communities. The people you saw making late night Uptown Charlotte a sketchy place to walk thru weren't there before the Pandemic. It use to be equally safe during the nighttime as during the day. And regarding what you said about Marijuana--- Pot is still not legal here, but people still smoke it, of course, but the scene isn't as dominant and in your face as you said. It's still pretty much a niche thing you'll find in certain areas. Btw, allot of the nighttime public consists of college kids from UNCC, Johnson Wales, and Queens University and there are many venues that appeal to and cater to them all over Charlotte. Lastly, I don't know the exact population number, but I do know for sure it's larger than 900k! The apartment building boom you witnessed began in 2015 as a result of countless millions of people moving here from especially New York and Chicago to escape the cold and expensive costs of living. Literally a mind boggling massive Exodus of New Yorkers fled NYC for Charlotte.

So... let me get this straight. Because it's mostly Black downtown, it automatically means that pot and lawlessness rule the area? After having lived in both NODA and Uptown, and frequenting South End for runs in the evening, I'm pretty sure the smell of pot is consistent throughout Charlotte. It's also pretty mixed no matter which end of Uptown you happen to be in, whether it be near the baseball stadium or closer to the main strip on Tryon. I'm not the biggest fan of the city, but I have to give them some credit for keeping it fairly clean and orderly amidst problems like the encampment & the shelters, etc. And compared to cities like Baltimore or San Francisco, can you really say you feel "on edge" in Charlotte?
