🔥I've wanted to try this out for so long. And on something that didn't really matter too much. So the stool got it.
[edit] there is a follow up video to this one now.
• Three Legged Stool or ...
Jamie
🔥Is it Shou Sugi ban, Charred or Yakasugi? I think that's in the type of Wood and depth of burn that would give it its name.
🔥You tell me? I could spend hours searching and probably still be as confused.
🔥Many years ago I would have called it charred. Now with so many Japanese words and techniques entering our vocabulary it's become a trend, that does get lost in translation.

❤ what a great Texture you've achived with a simple blowtorch.... I Love it. Carbonize a cutoff and try different finishes. Can't wait for the next Video of this

Thanks Tim. Not sure when I'll next get to it. It's not a priority job now. It was one of those things I 'wanted' to do. Not a 'need' to do.

I know how much you've been wanting to give this a go. Looks great and I can only imagine how satisfying it was to do - makes me want to have a go! It s such a refreshing change to see someone learn as they go on video. Can't wait to see the next stage and how it turns out. I can feel a chat on our Heads & Dovetails podcast in the pipeline. 🙂

'Heads & Dovetails' podcast IS the place to have a chat about it Gill. And we would urge people to listen to it. I think it's great.. You make it great Gill, I just ramble and you make it very cool. Thank you. Yes 'learning on the go' and filming as we go along. There a lot of 'experts' on RU-vid 🙈. Keep learning

Hi Peter. Thank you. it still needs wiping down and sealing somehow. Not really sure just yet. Working on a commission so I've put the stool to one side.

I might do the bottom. I've still not touched it since making the video. Too busy doing paid work and workshops. I'll get there

Hi. What do you think of this as a finish? Jamie
@joshwalker5605
@joshwalker5605 7 месяцев назад
finish is usually brush off all the loose carbon then an oil finish. Shellac might be nice but ive never tried.

It looks good ........ but it will look Stunning! Brush the carbon off (stiff brush) and you will be left with the grain pattern hilighted where the raised grain gets cleaned off and the carbonised lower sections give contrast. It will need treating though ...... big black marks on your clothes is not a good look, and that will be the making of the piece! I would go with clear oil to let it soak in and dry off smooth but maybe a wax applied to the wood that has been warmed up a bit allowing the wax to soak in a tad before being buffed up. Or you could go the opposite end and epoxy it to give a permanent seal? The world is your mollusc ...... it is up to you! ;o)

Thank you. I'll go down the Danish Oil route, a couple of coats and then some wax I think. Not a fan of Epoxy.

We used to burn the pointed ends of fencing stakes to preserve them, worked better than this pressure treated stuff now, no need to call it any foreign name.
