Lonnie Donegan wrote the book, he invented the skiffle sound that paved the way for the bass, drums and guitar bands that still lives on today..He has influenced everyone from The Beatles, Stones to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen...what a legend
Donkeys years ago I was at a party ( invited by Albert Lee ) and I met Lonnie and his wife who was much younger than him ( I think her name was Sharon ) it was mini skirt days ,and she was tasty .Often wondered if she brought on his last heart attack .
I can't think of any one better to sing with Chaz n Dave I totally love Loni Donegan this was fantastic it made me feel like I was there dancing and singing along with them,,
I was in my early 20s when Lonnie Donegan rose to fame and he really did change the face of British music. Prior to him we had no progressive music available to us. From then on dozens of a aspiring musicians emerged from acts like Marty Wilde, Joe Brown to the Beatles, The Animals, The Stones and beyond. Thank you Lonnie, you set the ball rolling and music changed forever and today anyone with real talent can emerge to greatness. We have a lot to thank him for. Prior to him we listened to music which we had no say in and had what we were given.

Lonnie predates Presley. He had his first single out, 'Rock Island Line' recorded in July 1954 which went gold in the UK. It peaked at No. 8 in the USA. Elvis was a Truck driver starting in on April 20th 1954. But by July 1954 his clowning at Sun records got Elvis noticed and by the 7th July he's on the radio causing listeners to phone in to find out who it was. He was aged 19.5 the next day on the eighth. Lonnie was 23 that April '54.
Yes indeed. I am so glad to have been born in 1962 to have enjoyed the legacy that was music from the 50s up to the late 80s. All went a bit Pete Tong after that....
Oh yes, we had all sorts of treats, kids riding new bikes, smell of turkey and veg in the oven, dads coming home from the pub around 3 pissed. Nice it was until the EU.... haha
@@TheDowzer highly unlikely, if they filmed it in a real pub they'd have to boot out the regulars and bring in the extras to make it look real and make it look like everyone was having the time of their lives. Going out on Saturday nights 30 years ago if you didn't see at least the odd glass attack and some broken bones you weren't in the right place, they ain't gonna be filming with that kind of risk
His chewing gum never lost its flavour on the bed time overnight, it changed flavor all the time and it also blew up not only in the UK but across the entire world... I really wonder what was in that chewing gum and how it could grow so much the whole world seemed to fit inside of that chewing bubble gum.... 🤪
Wowee, everybody's having an absolute ball, audience young and old, and the band just as obviously. you've got to love Lonnie's comment: I started in a pub and I'm back to the bloody pub. When I saw him, probably the very end of the 50's it was in a big and very full theatre. Mind you, the atmosphere there, good though it was, wasna a patch on the atmosphere in the pub here. It's fabulous.
Influenced Beck, Harrison, Page, Clapton- all those first wave rock guitarists, yet Rolling Stone failed to include him in their top 100- shameful omission.
They were good days to be growing up and Lonnie Donegan was a musical inspiration to many famous people to follow. The Beatles openly admitted being influenced by his music. As a young man in the late 1950's I frequented the Bodega in Cross Street, Deansgate, Manchester. Lonnie Donegan played Banjo there. Later I went to the Manchester Free trade Hall to see him and his Skiffle Group. Anybody remember Amiel Ford or Wee Willey Harris?
I saw Emile Ford twice in Liverpool. First time he had a little backing band, second time he was reduced to backing tapes. Shame, he just sounded like his records.
I used to buy a certain type of bubblegum (I think) which contained a picture of a singer. If you collected so many you could claim a prize. I never managed to collect more than about nine because I kept getting the ones with Wee Willy bloody Harris!
when this first aired my dad put the 1st vhs tape he could find in the machine to record the program trouble was it was our family Christmas 81!!!!! oh dear but at least we had Chas & Dave with Lonnie plus Eric Clapton later in the show doing a turn , like they say they dont makeum like this anymore
I took my youngest boy to the tribute to Lonnie gig at the Albert Hall. Saw Chaz and Dave, they rocked hard. I am an old Punk and Metal boy but that night saw many legends who were influenced by Lonnie and in turn set off younger bands. Had tickets for right above the stage door and got a wave from top British talent. Cheers
This was exactly how songs 'developed' in my yoof! Incredible fun to perform. You'd start with something like Rock Island Line and see just where the song went. Sometimes they would last so long people would go off-stage, visit the loo, get a pint, have a cigarette, come back and we'd still be playing. Frequently I would light a cigarette, stick it on the end of a string and set about a 'set'. By the time we had finished the cigarette would be burned out! I would get through 60 a day but I only smoked about 20 of these! What fun we had! .................and don't start me on how much booze we drank! We floated battleships we drank so much! Music is for fun - go have some FUN!
I had to wait till 1976 to see Lonnie, at the Liverpool Empire, like he`d never been away. Someone in the audience shouted out, " LONNIE DONEGAN ! " It swayed him a bit. Also on the bill was, Joe { Mr Piano Henderson. } Another great entertainer.
I had the privilage to meet Lonnie Donegon in Bristol when he was being interviewed by the "Late Great" Trevor Fry, one of the most talented radio presenters the Beeb ever had. Lonnie was so personable and a real gentleman, with an incredible sense of humour.... I'll never forget that few minutes in my life....
My favourite clip on the whole of RU-vid. The most influential musician of the 20th century- and yes all those first wave rock guitarists wanted to be Lonnie- drops in with the greatest pub act of the modern age and together get the whole crows going. It doesn't get better.
Would love to have been there for this unexpected unveiling of a legend. Arguably the most influential musician of the 20th century- Page, Harrison, Beck, Clapton all said he's the one who inspired them.
I only sah him live only once when he still played Banjo in Chris Barber's Dixieland Band, but I Firmen my own skiffle group. We all wanted to the only music.
I think Lonnie Donegan was the banjo player in the Chris Barber traditional jazz band, who sang American ‘folk songs’ to give the band a break. I remember my mates, forming a skiffle group, entirely inspired by Lonnie’s ‘Rock Island Line,’ all they needed were two guitars, a tea chest bass and a washboard with thimbles. Within two years, they had gone electric, with drums, guitars, etc., and were playing in the interval in dance halls where there were dance bands of something like fifteen musicians. It was not long before they took up the whole night and the big bands were gone. That was my experience in a provincial town of forty thousand in England. I agree, the Beatles and everything else with British pop music from that time stemmed from the singing of Lonnie Donegan. There’s still a lot of fun to be had from a cheap guitar and the learning of five chords.
