IU is known as a DIGIMON (digital monster). Once her album drops, people listen to it until it reaches #1 on all platforms with zero promotions, unlike almost all kpop acts who have to go on different music shows and interviews just for their songs to be even in the charts. Koreans have a personal attachment to IU's voice & songs which she mostly writes herself that it looks like her diary. They saw her grow up singing since she auditioned as a young girl in a talent show, that's why she's known as the "nation's little sister". I'm not even a fan but I totally understand why she's regarded as a top artist. Her music is personal as much as it is magical. There is a sense of comfort in her songs, even feeling like being teleported to a different world. She's a gem.

She decided to throw a full concert on TV because it was during covid and she realized how hard it was to perform without an audience. She had to perform for multiple camera angles and constantly change makeup and outfits. She said it was the first time she lost her voice performing a concert. IU is notorious for going overtime in her concert singing for 6 hours but these performances broke her. I hope you revisit her and her live concert performances.

That's a Sketchbook special that they filmed and prepared for 14 hours straight. "According to insider reports, the mini concert 'Sketchbook' recording began early in the morning with a series of 'tech rehearsals'. Then came the 'dry rehearsals', followed by another set of 'camera rehearsals', and finally, the main recording. Throughout each of these rehearsals and main recordings, it's said that IU sang a total of 60 full-length songs. Just before 11 PM KST on this day, IU performed her closing song "Good Day" for the last time, belching out her signature 3-key note so perfectly that some staff members on site shed tears after witnessing IU's perseverance and stamina"

AHHHH!!! It's here! I'm so glad you enjoyed reacting to her. This performance is really special to me and all other Uaena (her official fandom name) because this entire concert was done for free and aired on public broadcasting during COVID. I've definitely watched this over and over again while stuck at home quarantining and it gave me immense comfort and hope. Would love to see more IU on the channel. Her Killing Voice episode is a nice sampler. I'm always curious how she sings so clearly and effortlessly. She also films live performances of just about every single that she releases. Good Day is known for the triple high note, so it's an iconic song in her catalog, but there are sooooo many other good songs and performances out there to hear, too!

Now you guys need to see Seventeen on IU’s Palette 😂 She sings Seventeen’s “Dar+ling” and they do her song “Blueming”. They also do a band version on “Hot” and DK murders that chorus 👌🏻

Its a legendary song, and still popular in karaoke room to this day in South Korea. also this program was shot for her 12 years anniversary special (FREE mini concert in national TV)... Its live, but its for TV, means this is not her first time singing Good Day live that day (there were technical rehearsals, dry rehearsals, camera runs and the final recordings). Insiders said she sung like 60 songs in 14 hours in the end of recording. Without fans (its corona times). So yeah, that explain some "tired" voices there. As some comments said, you can find many younger version of Good Day in youtube ... (its 2010 song, btw, she's 17 when she first sing it)

Also, IU is so big in S.Korea... nowadays media and fans will write this : "even her existence alone is already meaningful and healing" :') FYI, its sooo difficult to do what IU did in last 13-14 years, its a dream within a dream and very unique case in S.Korea music industry. So yeah, its not just abt "vocal" and "technique". Her success is quite multidimensional and difficult to explain without context. I think you should react to her other songs bcs her music are soooo diverse : while her success in 2010-2012 was bcs her pop-orchestral sound, she would release 2 Korean folk remake mini albums, a jazz album, at least 2 mild pop-rock superhit, but famous of her ballads XD anyway, thank you. I love her song “ my sea” she’s the best

Good Day was the hit song that really catapulted her career in 2010. Her sound/style has changed quite a bit since then. I would love for you guys to react to her Killing Voice to see how her music/style/sound has changed over the years. IU is very adorable Probably why she has never lost her title of Nation’s Little Sister even tho she is 30 now( maybe around 27 at the time of this performance).

She is the biggest soloist in korea, I would not say she is the best vocal but her songs are all great and she is one of the best song writer in korea. All of her songs are hits.

Actually to also answer your question, IU's style of singing is definitely not common in SK or even Kpop. She's known for her incredible control in her singing (apart from lyrical and emotional singing), but there are definitely a few current kpop idols who look up to her who have referenced her as their blueprint, perhaps that's also where you may have found things to be similar as well!

This live performance was part of this 14 hour live concert recording she did for Sketchbook during the pandemic. She did multiple takes for different camera angles & had rehearsals and wardrobe changes. I wouldn’t point this concert out as her best performances by far, but she is incredible for pushing through all of that!

As a Uaena (IU fan) for 10+ years, I wouldn’t say she’s best known for her vocals. But she does have a large discography and many live performances online that would be incredibly interesting for Chase and Melia to dive into!

I think you guys spot on how her voice in live performance is raw and clean, not hiding behind anything. This is one of the reason why we really love her live perfs, we just love her voice so much. My fav live perfs of IU are My Sea (2022 Golden Hour Concert), and Hold My Hand (2019 Love Poem Concert)

I think her songwriting to me is one of the things that makes her stand out. This song isn't my favorite, but I know a lot of people love it. I like her more recent stuff that really has depth of emotion and feeling I don't get out of this one (mostly because she was just so young when this song came out)

One thing to keep in mind is that this song is from 2010. Her more current songs don't sound like this overly much , nor do her songs tend to repeat styles or patterns. So it's absolutely worth trying out some of her other songs, particularly those she wrote herself, as she's one of the top songwriters in South Korea. Specific recommendations would be Dear Name, Love Poem, Coin, Through the Night, and Celebrity, to name but a handful. As for her vocal style and texture: She tends to be very, very clear and clean. She doesn't belt a lot, nor does she perform a lot of vocal gymnastics to show off her voice. She makes choices about how she's going to sing a song as she's writing it, to heighten the story and emotion she's attempting to portray. Good Day was from her early years, so she had less freedom to make such choices, and had to sing it as it was designed. Which might be a good thing, as it gave the world her famous three-octave high note, proving that yes, she can actually perform some crazy vocals if/when desired. A more recent example of her showing off her vocal power is in a song called My Sea, if that's something you'd like to explore. People will often recommend checking out her Killing Voice episode, but... while it's a great sampling of her career... it was confirmed that she had a cold during it so she sounds a bit more nasal than she normally does.

IU is a very special talent and person. I discovered her through her acting. Her performance in the K Drama My Mister is outstanding. I didn't know at the time that her primary talent was as a singer. From her performance in My Mister (Netflix) she was asked to be the female lead in a commercial movie directed by a very famous Japanese director, who apparently was captivated by her in the same way I was. That movie, Broker, was invited to Cannes Film Festival in Feb of 2022, where it received a 12 minute standing ovation. She was nominated for Best Actress. She has made 6 or 7 K Dramas including 2 of the most popular ones Hotel Del Luna (netflix) and Scarlett Heart (not currently available in the US or Canada). After watching My Mister, which I have since rewatched 6 times, I looked into her music. Being a person who grew up in the 60' and 70's and not knowing anything about K Pop I was nervous. But all that changed when I heard her sing. I have jumped down the IU Rabbit hole and suggest everyone follow it is an amazing journey of discovery of this remarkable individual, over coming rejection time after time after time , even from members of her extended family to become one of the greatest vocalist in the world today. Does that sound like an over the top claim? It is a claim I started making shortly after hearing her sing and watching her perform live, she actually sounds better live. But then in January of 2023 Rolling Stone Magazine issued an update to their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time and IU became the 1st Korean to make the list. If you can't believe the worlds premier music Publication, who can you believe? My claim was validated. In addition to her singing and acting (she is currently film her KDrama since 2019), she is a song writer (having won awards for her lyrics), composer, producer, and model (currently a Global Ambassador for GUCCI, New Balance, Pepsi in Asia, and several major Korean brands and others). What separates her from all the other talented singers in Korea and the world for that matter, are many things. Her stage presence, her true concern and love of her fans, she has a heart of gold, she is always encouraging. She is Korean's national treasure. I hope you decide to journey down the IU rabbit hole and discover who this remarkable person truly is.

She's not just a singer, she's also a composer, producer, well known lyricist, actress and philantropist. Her music, if I will compare, is similar to Taylor Swift's music in a way that their music was created by them which make the songs more special and personal. When other artist were already falling behind, IU went and wrote, and produced her own songs which I think was one of the main reason why she is still popular even after 14 years from her debut.

I'm so glad you finally reacted to IU! She is one of my favourite artists of all times, cause she has a very soothing voice, and her songs are pretty. I'm a former profesionall cello player, so I'm quite picky about what I listen to, even tho k-pop broadened my views on music. I think I would agree, that k-pop is mostly supposed to sound easy, there are rare occasions when it sounds difficult. I feel like there are few reasons: it's a style in Korea, it's very accessible to general public, and there are many k-pop idols who can't actually sing well (?). It's kinda contraversial, but many kids are being accepted to the k-pop companies primarily for the good looks, and not every company has good vocal coaches, or they are primarily focused on dancing and visuals. I'm glad you liked this performance, but I feel like there are better things of her to listen to, something a bit more exciting. This song is quite old, and since than her style has evolved and she started writing a lot of songs herself, so it's worth checking out something fresher, like from the last two albums. I would be very intrested to see your commentary on her singing again. By the way you heard one of her songs before! About three months ago you reacted on your channel to the cover of her song Love Poem. It would be maybe interesting to listen to original this time :)

IU is the queen of South Korea, she debuted a long time ago, and she is always at the top, probably the biggest soloist there. Good day is the song that was her first big hit, it's like an anthem in Korea.

AHHHHH FINALLY IU!!! IU!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS AND RECOMMENDING BOTH IU AND TAEYEON'S KILLING VOICE! pls react to their killing voices because that is one of the best representations of her great vocals!!! She's always sung live in all of her concerts, and IU is actually known for always being incredibly on pitch when she sings!! Her concerts have the best qualities, and she's known to literally hold LONG concerts--she always have even longer encores, once she sang an encore for 2 hrs straight after her 5h concert ;; I think you'll get a much better idea of her live abilities in her concert fancams! I can definitely link them here for you if you wish! There's also something to note that : IU is currently suffering from something called the Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction ever since 2020 I believe in her left ear, she's also suffered a lot--there have been critics in the past that have said that she would not be able to break into the SK market because her tone was bad, she was too nasally and her singing ability was limited due to her husky voice and airy tone, but she definitely proved them wrong!

as a korean american the closest comparison i can draw to an american celebrity is keanu reeves. everyone, regardless of age and gender loves iu because she is just a respectful, charitable, and talented person. i personally think there are better vocalists in kpop but in terms of idol, no one is touching iu. she writes and produces, shes been active since she was a teenager, and she has 0 controversies. that's her main appeal

Of course it's simple. I really don't know who suggested this video to you as a start for IU. She's hardly excited or sings with passion! I suggest that you watch IU's killer voice, dear name, love poem, raindrop, something like that that shows her vocal capabilities and the diversity of her singing style. ps: She is the singer with the most hit songs for several reasons (first her distinctive voice - but there are singers with stronger voices without a doubt) but the most important reason is that she writes all her songs and all her songs are deep, different and beautiful, she has pop jazz ballads and many more, she is like Taylor Swift completely, their voice is beautiful but there are more beautiful and stronger than them, but their writing skills and the songs they release make them top the scene.

IU is one of my favorite solo singer from Korea. I love her voice, but I love it more when she sings ballad or slow tempo songs. You should listen when she sing “dear name” live. And more recomendation for you two: Taeyeon Dingo Killing Voice. You’ll absolutely love it. And you should hear AKMU (Akdong Musician) they’re siblings with amazing voice and talent

TBH As a UAENA for five years, IU's type of music is not something you'd listen to on a daily basis but it's the type of music that you would talk about for a long time and the type you would want to listen in-person at least once in your life. :) I'd recommend you guys to listen to the official concert videos released esp. the recent ones hihihi
