Can a 2020 Mazda MX5 ND2 with 181bhp and 205Nm keep up with a 2019 Tesla Model 3 performance with 444bhp and 638Nm at Bedford Autodrome.
Also, how far can the Tesla go on track with one charge?

Tesla: Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres and road brakes

I think there's one factor that you're forgetting. If the batteries didn't overheat but it was a race, the mx-5 would close the gap towards the end since after several laps the tyres and brakes would be in much better condition allowing much higher cornering speeds. Would be interesting to see if the mx-5 could catch up in say, a 10-15 lap race.
@RichardFanders
@RichardFanders 7 месяцев назад
That's true, if it was a 30 min race then it would be a different story.
@hammamboutafant3659
@hammamboutafant3659 7 месяцев назад
@@RichardFanders I don't think it's fair to race the mx-5 which is around 36K euros agains the performance which cost around 60-70K is fair. The base model 3 (39K) is way more close. Kuddos for the video, short but enjoyable.

tbh the m3p don’t have to go all in, but after 30min the battery will be empty anyway

Incredible Richard. Good to hear you touching on how the Model 3 Performance couldn’t do long track stints because of the battery overheating. Another thing that people overlook is brakes. I have a 2017 430d and I was able to keep up with a tuned 370Z because I had much much better brakes.

@ianmush6278

@@neblolthecarnerd yes but also (and more importantly), better brakes means you spend less time braking and more time accelerating. That’s because you’re able to leave your braking till late in corners and sharp bends

Ive tracked lots of cars, 205 gti 1.9 one of my favourites, but i had a 2008 mx5 and i just couldn't gel with it at all. Didnt like the performance and really found the handling unnerving at higher speeds. Was gone within 6 mths, not a car for me, but appreciate some like it.

They have a huge amount of adjustment with the tracking compare to most cars and when out they can be pretty awful. Get someone to align it who knows what they're doing like the guys at AK Automotive in the North East and it can transform the car

I noticed you break with your left foot. When you felt you need it for your "track craft"? How did you learn and practice it?
@RichardFanders
@RichardFanders 7 месяцев назад
I use my left foot as it means I can transfer from gas to brake and back to gas again very quickly which makes me feel like I have more control in certain situations. I guess I started practising it when I started track driving which was 2014, I think I may have practised the pedal feel somewhere quiet but it's never been very difficult for me, maybe more concentration the first 100 times or so but it's been natural for a long time now. If I didn't have a clutch I would left foot brake all the time on track.

I’d like to see a true battle of attrition against a Tesla, a full track day against a decent sports car, the Miata is not the right choice for this. I’ve challenged a fanboy friend of mine to this if he actually gets his Plaid I will see if it can survive a day against my Mach 1.
@davidrumming4734
@davidrumming4734 3 месяца назад
I’m guessing the Mazda is better balanced and weighs less therefore better in the bends. And also, the Mazda is a fair bit cheaper than that Tesla. And you can refuel the Mazda in around 5min or so. And the Tesla can only manage 50 miles and it has to keep stopping to let the battery cool down. -if you did a mini endurance run, and you started the Mazda with a full fuel tank, I bet the the Mazda would win….because the Tesla has to keep stopping. It’s a bit like having a fast new computer that for what ever reason keeps crashing….any performance advantage is lost.

At least you have to actually drive the MX-5 and therefore get the fun and rewards when you get it all right. The Tesla driver just has to sit there like a nob and try not to go to sleep before the battery pack overheats. No point owning one of those unless you think the fun of driving is being first away from the lights.
