What an unbelievable chase!!! I got to go down to Southern California this past weekend to chase UP 4014 the Big Boy. I had an amazing time with all of my friends. All of these videos were at different locations from Cajon Pass, to the outskirts of Barstow. I will have a video of the other trains I saw in SoCal up by the end of this week. I saw so many other trains on this trip but the main star was 4014. I can't wait until she comes to NorCal and I get to film it on home turf. I will try my best to film other trains. It's going to be hard sense I will be getting some family stuff done. However, in December I will be making another trip of a lifetime. I will be traveling to the East coast and I get to railfan in Atlanta, GA. I will also be taking the train all the way home. That will not happen until December though. Hope you guys really enjoy this amazing video and chase!!! Like, Comment, Subscribe!!!!!!!

Just the sound of Big Boy chugging down the track will give you chills. Magnificent engineering.

The year is 2023.... young children exclaim "It's 4014" as the Union Pacific Big Boy rolls through. Absolutely badass; all these years later it still makes such a monumental impression. A modern leviathan.

Actually the video is around 4 years old so it's actually 2019... Still cool to hear kids recognize that it's 4014, though 😁

When I was a tot, our family would take a picnic, go to the east side of Sherman Hill and watch the Big Boys at work. IT WAS SIMPLY GRAND THEN, as it is now! My dad was once a fireman on the CB&Q. He was in love with stream engines but found trucks an even stronger calling. Growing up a few miles south of Cheyenne, I got a full dose of both...

Great video, man! Glad you were there to witness such a magnificent piece of history! I was there to catch it from Victorville - Barstow, CA on October 12th! ( “Hope all is going well!” ) - Will Vanni!

Superb! Just adore the old machines! Pre-computer; slide rule calculators only and plenty of brain went into them by people that really understood what was required. UP still a growth company and contributor to massive economic prosperity. "Hey interweb, hold my beer-This how its done"-4014 :)

That's the longest train I've seen Big Boy pulling -- some 23 cars in total not counting the engines and tenders.

Great video, but MAN do a good chunk of the people waiting and watching PISS me off. I'd imagine this is what goes through their tiny heads "Golly gee, that big ole' train is coming right at me so I better walk up right onto the edge of the track to get a better look, wait for it to get closer, and then slowly back away to a safe distance since I was too close anyways. That way, other people watching will think I'm a bad ass or something and then the train's engineer will think I'm cool, too." When in reality, everyone just wants to punch you. OKAY... sorry for the rant. It was building for a while during my railfan binge watching today. Again, awesome video. The Big Boy has a special place in all of our hearts.

With how well the 4014 performed, you have to wonder why UP didn't send any 4000's to operate on Cajon during WW2
@remylopez4821
@remylopez4821 Год назад
Probably because most steam locomotives on the west coast were oil burners not coal
@davidwhiting1761
@davidwhiting1761 7 месяцев назад
There were only 25 of them and UP really needed them to hustle tonnage over the Wasatch more than they did over Cajon. The aim was to eliminate the need for helpers running East out of Ogden - ain't no way you're doing that over Cajon. While helpers did eventually return to Ogden it was mostly to increase the speed going up the grade since the UP upped the tonnage rating of a 4000 from 3800 tons to 4450 tons around 1947.

What calculation is made to. establish how many diesel prime movers are required to pull a train. Is it one diesel per 40 loaded rail trucks, or more etc? Can someone advise please? Thank You. George.
@KiRiTO72987
@KiRiTO72987 7 месяцев назад
Amount of engines is based on uweight of the train and the maximum grade it will encounter in big boys case there more just their to help prevent wearing out big boys highly expensive custom brake shoes and to help extend range since there're aren't really many places they can refill water and bunker oil for the train though you can tell the diesel engines are only running at low power by the sound they put out
@DaveHole-dq5wg
@DaveHole-dq5wg 8 месяцев назад
7000 HP sure doesn't need any diesel helpers... !
@KiRiTO72987
@KiRiTO72987 7 месяцев назад
Yeah the diesel engines really aren't doing much of the work here, there really only there to comply with PTC requirements and to help slow the locomotives down without burning through the big boys brakes as much and to help stretch the range of the big boy since we don't have water towers etc anymore

What did the train being pulled weigh and how much more could it have pulled?
@captglenn100
@captglenn100 7 месяцев назад
The diesel engines are about 423,000-432,000 lbs each. I am only guessing but I estimate Big Boy 4014 can pull approximately 60 fully loaded rail cars for the steepest railway. A whole lot more if empty or on a flat track.

As I understand, it is for electronic support to connect to all the systems that interconnect a modern railroad, something that big boy isn't / cannot be fitted with.
@GreggCesaroni
@GreggCesaroni 7 месяцев назад
Part of it is the brakes. Sure it can use its own brakes. But where are you going to find replacement shoes? Need to be custom. Also if it does long tours it needs efficiency because not everywhere has water for it. The RU-vidr Hyce talks about it more in detail.

As much as I understand the allure of these old steam trains, foamers need to realize they are trespassing on railroad property when they get up close and personal with these trains; which is a federal offense. It is dangerous to get near any train when they are in motion. Anything can happen. Is it worth your life? I worked for the railroads for 8 years and some of the things I observed are beyond stupid on the part of railfans, aka; "foamers."

Oh untwist your panties for Christ sake. It's a railroad sponsored event. Nobody was trespassing or got too close to the train. Union Pacific broadcasts on their website when and where the Big Boy 4014 will be. If they didn't want the rail fans out there 1) they wouldn't have rebuilt it and 2) they wouldn't advertise wherd it will be. So shut up about it.
