Moderation by Jeff Levenson -
Supporting the Michael Brecker Saxophone Competition July 2021, by JAM MUSIC LAB University & Jazz Fest Wien.
The study of jazz and pop - history, development, vibrancy - is richly informed by the oral accounts of players and individuals who “wrote” the story of these musics. Their eye-witness testimony is an invaluable resource for learning.
Michael Brecker might be the most influential saxophonist to emerge in the post-John Coltrane era. He was a model of the cross-pollinating musician, an instrumentalist who borrowed from different styles and genres, then integrated his findings into a singular voice. His process underscored the challenges - and role - of the creative artist.
JAM is honored to dedicate the first episode of this new Oral History series to the life and music of Michael Brecker, as remembered by shapeshifters Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine and Joe Lovano. JAM’s Jeff Levenson moderates.

Wow! This was great! My Grandfather worked at Seventh Ave South. I went there all the time. What a great musical experience. Influences me to this day. Mike was so great as were most of the guys they discuss here. I saw Pat Metheny one night at Seventh Ave South. Marcus Miller, Hiram, Brecker, Will Lee so many greats. Love this!!!

A really great revealing roundtable nicely moderated by Mr. Levenson. Seeing Joe Lovano and Randy Brecker together reminds me of seeing the Return Of The Brecker Bros. in NYC 1992 (Village Gate?) and sitting one table away from Mr Lovano! Growing up on the Brecker Bros., finally getting to see them live was epic and to share the experience with Joe L.....well, that was incredible! The energy that band was able to generate was astounding - Randy, Mike Stern and , especially, Michael would take solos that built chorus after chorus after chorus and when you thought they couldn’t go any further....they’d go farther...and then more after that!! I remember my wife and I looking at each other in total disbelief! Oh, and Dennis Chambers helped move things a bit too ;^)

You are very fortunate to have seen them live, as you so joyfully admit, because the studio album with Dennis Chambers is astounding. Thank you for sharing.

I knew about only the most mainstream jazz plus a little in 1983. But I knew who the Brecker Brothers were from the Zappa in New York album. I got a job in Silver and Horland on West 48th - selling guitars - but we had these great horn repair guys, Perry and John, doing repairs upstairs next to a skilled luthier, Carlo Greco. The Breckers and lots of others came through. New York was hopping then. 48th Street was incredible for me. Mad talent everywhere.

Wonderful - so many fascinating insights. Peter Erskine: Mike and Billy Cobham were the Elvin/Coltrane duet for our generation... Thanks for posting this gem!

Pure gold here. This is amazing. Like Mike O’Sullivan said in the comments below, I could listen to these guys talk all day. We need more round tables with the greatest jazz musicians, it’s an insightful and powerful format that opens up so much history and learning in a short chunk of time. Gratitude to all involved. ❤️🙏🏼

Yes Peter, it’s the vibrato! 100%. Great to hear you say that. When I was a younger sax player an elder player pointed that out in my sound. I didn’t realize it at the time but that was the thing that I was unconsciously emulating because I dig the sound that MB and DS both had (and still do). To me this is the sound of “modern” saxophone.
