Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, we are preparing the domain to open our gates for the Journées du Patrimoine. We meet an electrician who can help us bring in modern electrical systems to our chateau offices. After several weeks of anticipation, we finally have the old chateau gardens cut back to reveal a peek at the original renaissance garden design!
Our beau chateau (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!
You can support our renovation projects by joining our Patreon Community, where you can also gain access to exclusive videos and behind the scene access with Daphne and Ian! All patron funding is used to renovate this historical French Chateau. Every patron is paramount to our chateau renovations and we thank you all tremendously!

Porcelain stoves are the most efficient way of heating there is. In the 18th century, Swedish castles and houses used them, and they were famous for being the warmest places to live in Scandinavia, so France adopted them, too. Worth finding a way to repair the one you have. They are both beautiful and useful.

I'm sure you know already, but the parchmarks in the garden show where there's a hard surface below, like a pathway or footings for an old wall. In the hotter months, the moisture in the earth gets blocked from being drawn to the surface and the grass above the hard feature dies off quicker than the grass around it. That garden is going to be awesome! 😎

No surprise that US electrical regulations seem odd to him, Europe runs 230 Volt for everything where In the US, Canada and some of South America 120 volt is used in the majority of the house. 240 is generally wired into kitchens, laundry rooms and garages to run dryers, stoves, water heaters, central heating and cooling, Welders etc.

What a wonderful gift your Grandfather gave you. He obviously saw that you loved his dream as much as he did. Inheritance tax is brutal in France as I watch another channel that the family of two brothers and two sisters couldn’t afford the tax and decided to burn the place down (leaving only the shell) and sell the land. So sad. Another utuber has bought the once amazing property and is going to try to restore it from the shell. He is not rich so it will be a life project as he can afford. Bless you Daphne and Ian in your quest to save another French chateau. New Zealand 🇳🇿

Hi Daphne & Ian! This is Elle from San Francisco sending my thanks to you for sharing your story about your grandfather, Alzheimer’s, and COVID. As you spoke of your summers with him in France, I sensed how much love you have in your heart for him. It’s truly touching how you left NoCal for France to help him with the property in his waning months and days. You are a courageous woman for taking on such a massive challenge, and are showing just how strong and capable you really are to all who are privileged to watch your journey. It’s comforting to know your partner, Ian, is with you now and is engaging with the restorative process. In no time at all, you’ll have a million subscribers because you’re not afraid to be vulnerable in sharing your story, seem like down-to-earth people who aren’t afraid of hard work, and you’re committed to each other and the chateau.. I’m rooting for your success, have already subscribed, and will be with you in spirit along the way. Do check in with fellow RU-vidrs, The Petherick’s, Billy and Stephanie. They’ve restored a lovely chateau and have embarked on a new project….a former convent, chapel, and school. I think you’d get along famously. Sending good thoughts and wishes for much success. I used to have a large stove like that in Germany, called “Kacheloven” Once every 15 years someone had to redo the grout with mortar. Check if you can find a video in RU-vid. The two best parts of this video were Daphne's decision to have a light for the balcony for wine, bread, and cheese in nice weather; also Ian's discovery of the original garden boundaries. I thought you might have been able to make them out from the different vegetation growing in patterns in the garden, but after mowing the grass I lost hope for that. Will the next step be buying a new weed-whacker or LIDAR, lol? You could pay for both if you metal-detect the garden and find French gold Napoléons and silver francs buried there.

Did your grandfather leave you any money to pay for the renovations and restoring the Chateau? Does your Chateau qualify for any Funds/ Historical grants . I saw on another Channel where they got money to replace their roof that they qualified for. It looks like the ceiling in the office is lowered as it does in the children's room . If it is lowered have you thought about opening it back up to the original height? I don't speak any french but I love hearing you speak french. Awesome video... The Beau Chateau, what a wonderful, magical place to call your home. I love the over head drone shots of the Chateau and its grounds. A wonderful job with the cinema photography and the music in the background! You are very fortunate to be living this dream, and we are lucky to live vicariously through your videos. Thanks for sharing.

I'm only just now seeing this in early March. I was hoping you would cut back the vegetation here to find garden perimeters and delineations. It is very exciting!💗

Just wow, mes former Californian amies... what an adventure! Do you ever pinch yourselves hard?? Is it just an fantastic dream? 😁 The original gardens must have been on a grand scale, and designed by someone important, looking at the shadow that is still visible. Is there an existing painting or blueprint somewhere? I'm feeling there was a maze as well...so exciting! So many of the chateaux renos have had these amazing, complicated garden designs that are now sadly gone...it's wonderful to regenerate them, as they were made to complement the opulence of the extraordinary buildings such as yours 💚👑 (Have you seen the movie "The Serpent's Kiss" ?? ☺️) You're both doing a stellar job, and Ian does look like a native, a cavalier stepped right from an antique painting ... ; ) Have fun you two...😘xx

Your soothing voice is out of this world, and to be honest your French is outstanding. You speak just like a native.

It's a gorgeous stove. I'm sure France still has some artisans that are more than capable. Not only check online, but ask around the local areas. Sometimes you can only find something by word of mouth.

Outstanding production quality made this such a pleasure to watch! I'm so excited to see the revealing of the original garden structures. It's like an archeological dig. The cobblestones are also going to be worth all the work to uncover. Its grueling, but the results will be magnificently rewarding.
