We survived a derecho 2 yrs ago. Our city lost 60% of our trees. We have planted a couple this year knowing they will not reach their full glory in our lifetime. (In our 70s) I hope the next generation can enjoy them.

Hi there from New Zealand! Just a quick tip for you when putting garden waste/mulch etc into the the trailer. Put a large tarpaulin/plastic sheet into the trailer on the bottom with enough hanging out to get hold of. Then when your trailer is full grab the plastic and pull. The whole contents will slide out!!! This only works for dry or light stuff. It is much harder with wet stuff🤪🐕🤪🐕🤪

I just did this, too. Hired tree guys dropped a huge red oak and 3 scotch pines, plus ground down 11 stumps. Just planted 30 acorns from the red oak in hopes it will live again. I often find practical men like Jerome are wonderful problem solvers. Does anyone else think that last musical choice sounds a bit Pink Pantherish? Great work in the park! While i understand that you take down large dead trees, please leave some smaller dead trees for the birds to build caves. They urgently need those dead trees since many birds can't build nests otherwise. Thank you! Oh, and the moment you said "this is the bark area" - Ziggy immediately responds and …barks. What a well trained young dog! Rare nowadays.

@cmclaren7

"My six pack is hiding under a protective layer of blubber." Phillip had me rolling on the floor laughing. BTW, putting wood chips/leaves and manure against the roots of a plant should kill the plant. The wood chips/leaves and manure are creating compost. That process creates a lot of heat and would likely kill a plant. It is best to have a separate compost pile that you "harvest" for new plantings.

My Dad brought me horse manure and it nearly killed all my garden. Horses do not digest all they eat like a cow. That's why cow manure is great. Order you the tree watering bags that you fill up with water and it slowly seeps out to water your trees. Invest in a water tank that you can fill up and pull around and water plants around your yard. I have a 30 gallon tank that I put on my golf cart and use as needed.

When we lived on acreage and planted trees -hedges etc we then had a very long drought. So someone suggested that if we put a piece of plastic piping into the hole next to the root ball, and then you only had to put water into the pipe. Now that was many years ago when we lived in a hot climate and had very little rain if any at times. Or you got a deluge They survived. We have since moved to a cooler climate and still have very dry times and when our daughter started her new garden, we told her to try this method and she is very happy, because she can save water this way. It is only a suggestion for your trees. Loving what you all do.

Copper beech trees will get 4-5 feet or more in width for the base trunk They need a lot of room. Very majestic in appearance. Actually a focal point of a lawn. Do you have ice storms? A beech will bend. At least the ones here. Beautiful bark. The bark had historical use as well. A thuja giant hedge tree is a good evergreen for privacy. Happy planting. 🌲🌲🌲

Your tree planting scheme is probably much more complex than you have said. While it seems that all those wonderful new trees are going to beautify the boundary, it might only be in summer as they all appear to be deciduous and will not provide privacy in autumn winter and spring from whatever might be built next door. A second barrier of evergreen trees will provide year round privacy , some added protection from prevailing wind and be a sound barrier as well. Trees like copper beech will grow to have single mature stems and in a few years the initial privacy will disappear when the leaf canopy starts 15 feet from the ground. You don’t do things by half measures, so maybe you already have plans for hedges etc.

Just a thought. If you put a large tarp (tarpaulin) on the bottom of the trailer floor and then put the chips on, you could then just pull on the tarp to unload. Weave a rope loosely through the grommets to act as handles to help pull the tarp with two people or have 1 person hold the rope and the other drive slowly forwards.

Hi Phillip, you are so lucky to have Anna's father there to help you with the new trees & of course your neighbor helping with his big machinery to lift the trees up off the truck. Make sure you don't put the new mulch around the trees as the mulch is still green. My Mama always made a little moat around the new trees with seasoned mulch to make a place to put the water so the trees will get plenty of water without the water running off away from the trees. I wouldn't put manure or fertilizer around the new trees until they are established, you can buy something at the store for newly planted trees to help stimulate the roots though. Hugs to the girls & Anna Kathy USA

Silver birch trees, surrounded by a swathe of green-stemmed cornus in the back, then shorter orange-stemmed and finally red-stemmed cornus in the front. The idea is inspired by the appearance of a great big fire. When the winter sun shines, lighting the whole area it looks stunning. (Well, I think so)! I love hearing about your garden.

So satisfying and great to make your own mulch instead of filling the tip with green matter! Prayer for a wet spring and summer. My dad would always plant a pvc plumbing pipe into the ground by the trees to reach the roots. He would then just stick a garden hose into the pvc pipe and the water would go straight to the roots. It worked well with our hot Oklahoma summers! Cheers!
