No it s not that, and it still doesn't undertsand the rules at all (despite being able to give them in all details if asked). It will make these illegal moves even if you keep telling him where every piece is after each move. It's only able to play rather well in thz opening in main lines because it has access to a lot of text sources mentionning common opzning lines. It just plays by mimetism.
@ChaseAnderson5k
@ChaseAnderson5k 6 месяцев назад
He did tell it the moves again so people are correct. Though, people are probably forgetting if it can play nearly 30 moves correctly, then assuming it's good at more than just this opening there's a good chance it could defeat many of the people saying it's bad without breaking rules. But it also may not know what to do when people make bad moves, so who knows what would happen, it may start getting confused faster in a 1000 level game.

@TheBlueArcher
@TheBlueArcher 6 месяцев назад
@@peymanafshani9304 I'm not so sure about that. Train it on enough high level games and analysis. the word salad will be predicting the words that describe a moves intentions pretty accurately. I imagine it would be a more human-like player than an engine as well since it would presumably be likely be trained on human games more than engine games. Even this video, yes chatgpt has memory, but i'm surprised a language model can actually somehow end up predicting so many legal moves for so long without actually storing a chess state in memory is petty amazing in and of itself.
@GurgleGurgleBlahBlah
@GurgleGurgleBlahBlah 6 месяцев назад
@@TheBlueArcher Chess is primarily a combinatorial game where the quality of a move in most cases depends on developments many plies ahead. A language model can do very well in openings where there is a lot of human games, analysis and text available for them to produce text but as soon as you get to midgame it basically will be useless and very generic, as shown in this video. chatGPT is basically a smart search engine that spits out text based on text that is has been fed to (i.e., known information). It can't produce deep novelty, it can't think and it can't reason and it can't explain intentions because the model has nothing inside it that is capable of those things. It cannot analyze a novel position the same way stockfish can.

@christianchung9412
@christianchung9412 6 месяцев назад
@@newme1589if language models improve at this rate for the next 5 years, would you be comfortable calling it AI? I think you're missing a lot of details when you say "it updates the board" because I don't think it's established that inside the model there's an obvious 8x8 matrix that is 1:1 with the chess game, so this should be pretty impressive. if you can find a chess game that played out exactly like this one though, the part about looking for similar games is probably right, though think about how text representations of chess online differ. the result is impressive either way imo actually I was only halfawy through the video when I commented, by the 17 move mark, the game is almost certainly unique because of the weird gpt blunder, so after that you can't say the model is working like a lookup table

IDK if you know how GPT works, but it's based on token restraints which with GPT-4 is 8k token count. Token count limits it's 'memory', so once you reach midgame just save the moves you've done and its done then paste that into a new entry so it will be able to continue. Probably just doing this for the funny meme but still would be cooler if you could actually showcase GPT-4's skill.

As someone who's been using the ChatGPT API for personal projects, I'm glad more creators are using ChatGPT-4 as the model for the AI shenanagins :D ChatGPT-3 and 3.5 just aren't as "aware" (or just don't hold enough data in the model memory but that's not easily explained)

what i suggest is happening a limit in the amount of text it can handle/remember. You would need to restart/clear the conversation one in a while and give it the position again to free its memory, then I would suspect that it would do better.

Hi Levi. I'd like to ask you a question about your work ethic and determination. It's no secret that your time management and work ethic are infallible. Which begs the question, how do u force yourself to maintain such a consistent schedule? What is your secret? Do you ever feel down? If so, how do you motivate yourself to get back up and resume your grind? I'd love to hear from you. Thank you for your consideration.

It has limited working memory span. Likely current version uses the model with 128k tokens input and 4k output so it is much better than GPT-3 or older version of GPT-4. If it is full then it does some cutting and summarization and hence it lapses, drops some knowledge of positions. I think you could create a bot out of GPT-4 with some code using API directly instead of web page - which would allow to discuss and throw moves in that discussion, but internally: - would remove old board states from history and show only last one to the model - would autumatically cancel wrong moves or multiple moves and make it re-do to retry - would cut old moves history so the context span limit would be maintained It could be done with chat model like described or even assistant model (with assistant with custom system instructions that would help it maintain memory of the board state and re-do wrong moves if anything like that happen). Probably someone will do such an engine soon as for a programmer accustomed to using that API it is a side-project for one evening.

The amazing thing is that it is making moves based on neural net weightings, ie it isn't trying out all reasonable moves and evaluating all the braches to th3 level of thousands of moves. It is just looking at the board (ok, remembering the board) and going, yeah, i think this should be next.
@laoZhaoLife

I'm not sure it's called ChatGPT-4. The official name for the LLM/model is GPT-4, where ChatGPT is the name of the GUI of the official website to chat with GPT3.5/4.

For anyone wondering, the reason why ChatGPT broke down and started doing stupid things in the middle of the game is because the game had gone into new territory when Levy moved f4. It was no longer a well-known position that ChatGPT could look up the answers to in the database.
@thatonecommunist
@thatonecommunist 7 месяцев назад
It's not even just that, it goes deeper, the training data for each lookup becomes less and less as the chess game progresses... I propose anarchy-chess becomes a significant enough portion of chess training data that it just decides it can do anything it wants. Not only that, but there's very little training data where somebody makes an outrageous move and then is told no, because nobody does that outside of anarchy chess, where it is allowed.
@mstefa007

and previous version of chatGPT wasn't able to look it up at all? Why was it playing so poorly then?
@mikebreithaupt6149
@mikebreithaupt6149 7 месяцев назад
@@mstefa007 My semi-educated best guess is a difference and improvement in chess position recognition. I would love to see Levy play the 'egg' opening against the newest version of ChatGPT. For science of course. Does that confirm my suspicion that playing crazy moves against ChatGPT and getting it into territory that is not in the database causes it to malfunction?
@thatonecommunist
@thatonecommunist 7 месяцев назад
@@mstefa007 Much less training data on chess, much fewer parameters dedicated to chess, both of which meant it could only make random chess-like moves.

Okay, anyone who thinks "ChatGPT can play chess now" doesn't understand machine learning technology. Adding a plugin to ChatGPT does not give the actual model any new capabilities. It doesn't make it smarter, more self-aware, or anything. It's as if you said your car knows how to play chess, because you just connected your phone to Samsung Auto and ran a chess app through it. What's more, if you mean that 4 is smarter, again this proves nothing special, because it simply is GPT 3 with more processing power and storage. Yes, any time you throw more at it, it will be able to do more. That's not new technology, it's not any kind of real AI advancement. It's just more power.

It could very well be using stockfish as a tool, and then just giving justifications for the move after the fact, which, when primed with the correct context, it should quite adept at.
