How often has it happened at top level chess where the position is roughly equal and one of the players blunders a mate in two! That too with 30 minutes on the clock! Very rarely you would say! Well it happened in Magnus Carlsen vs Ding Liren at the Norway Chess 2024. Check out this round 6 battle with the commentary by Sagar Shah.

I am sad because I followed ding liren's games so much I can't even believe a player of his caliber can do this i mean we are talking about prime Ding who shook Carlsen time and time again, 100 classical unbeaten record. magnus himself said ding is the player toughest to win against. the ding who crushed every top player we know of in his prime or even in 2022 a simple bishop mistake by hikaru and he converted it to a win i think being a world champion has only given negative impact on his career seeing ding in this adjusting seat again and again, coughing, not able to sit properly, not able to concentrate, looking depressed, hand glued to head, always looking down a year and i have not seen him smiling. his handshake in this video seemed like he was doubting playing chess I mean c'mon why ding is the nicest GM i have seen ever THE CALMNESS DING HAD ON HIS FACE WHILE PLAYING IS TURNED INTO DEPRESSION

I get where you are coming form, and this is probably why he has not given anything special in the openings lately. However, stopping mate in 2 is not giving away any preparation. It is obvious from his demeanour and interviews both during and after the championship match that he hadn't expected to be in the match, let alone win it. I think that pressure has been immense for him the last year. Because of chess's intellectual nature, the world championship has often been a political endeavour for some countries (e.i the battle for WC between the US and the USSR). China is one of those countries that would love to have a world champion in chess, and I would imagine that the pressure to maintain the title is palpable.

i think its more probable that ding is doing the old "appearing weak and broken" strategy, i don't wanna be stereotypical here but chinese people tend to do that a lot of times to catch their opponents with an element of surprise. either he is very good at acting or he is actually going through something and like some say "forget how to play chess" but the fact is that once you learn something you don't unlearn it, when someone learns how to walk, they don't forget it and start crawling again. that's the main reason why i don't buy it and i think he will play a lot differently against gukesh. this comment may not age well but we'll see

Magnus Carlsen kicked off this game with Nf3 move that falls within the Reti Opening: The King's Indian Attack. It is a waiting move that retains the ability to join multiple schemes. Ding Liren in turn confirmed this opening with the first two moves, but the third one was wrong as he played e6 instead of Nc6, and what made matters worse when he played d4-d5, because he opened the white diagonal in favor of Carlsen's bishop. The chinese fell into the same trap that Korchnoi fell into against Karpov in The 1978 World Chess Championship: the Black's problem of opting for the appropriate defense against White's first move.

Ok what am i missing? Because magnus moves the queen and takes out the rook. Why can’t the king just take out the queen to get out of the check. I don’t really play chess so there is probably some rule that i havent understood.

No shock, as if he deliberately let it happen.. I think Ding has lost interest since he became champion...as if that was his goal and lost interest

I'm rated 1000 online and spotted that mate in 2. Ding must be under smoe kind of illness on a daily bases and his body can not keep up with high level chess games

Ding seems to be in a really bad place. Maybe playing chess isn't the best thing for him atm. He's looking more and morel ike a tortured soul.

Looks like Ding did this on purpose...look at the way he resigns...no emotion at all...like he knew it already.

I don't believe this was a blunder. I think he didn't want to play on and threw the game. You can see in his face, he doesn't seem phased by the fact that he made such a huge mistake. I believe that's because it wasn't a mistake at all, he did not seem to want to be there. I truly hope he is alright. He might be a chess titan, but he is also human.

That a WC should overlook such an obvious mate threat is ridiculous!😂

What’s going on for ding. It’s so sad to see a world champion a very nice gentleman have issues like this. Certainly a mental thing going on. Either it’s a real issue or if we go to other side it could be a tactic to make gukesh become complacent
