I'm watching this full thing even though I know most of it. Really great reminder as we tend to fall into old habits. This is probably the best explanation of how to iterate with AI that I've seen yet. For anything, not just writing. Really great job. On a side note, I'm old enough to remember when computers changed everything in all forms of work. Some people adapted and learned, others refused and couldn't be bothered. I feel the weight of needing to learn AI as I did with computers in the 80's. I know a lot of people who didn't and got stuck in very limited opportunities. Just like then, as it is now, it is not the job of the world to slow down for us. It is for us to keep up with the world. Luddites be damned.

Another alternative to a completely negative prompt is to provide a This Not That prompt. I have had good success with this method. Sometimes it can be hard to eliminate the unwanted content simply with an opposite positive prompt if the two are not clear polar opposites which are exclusive. "Include ___ rather than ___" is an example of how you can implement this.

Thanks so much Jason! The only roadblock i hit frequently is using when using chatGPT for fiction writing - often it's self censorship will be triggered at very superficial levels, so will fail to provide requested summaries, line-editing/copy editing feedback, after being "triggered" my work in progress is steeped in life in europe between 1700s and late 1800s and chat GPT does not like some of the realities of life during those times LOL
@TheNerdyNovelist
@TheNerdyNovelist Месяц назад
Yeah that’s a big issue. Only real solution is to use one of the less moderated models like Mistral.
@user-tj7uv4fy9x
@user-tj7uv4fy9x Месяц назад
If you ask it to help you with research on the dark realities of Europe in that time frame as a study session--it is willing to do that. Give it a few messages to allow it to adapt to the subject matter and share knowledge with you as a study. Then tell it that you are inspired, and want to write fiction inspired by real-world facts such as those just discussed. Disclose that you're not romanticizing or promoting these methods, but trying to create a literary masterpiece. You can reference works like Dracula who is inspired by a historical figure, or Vikings who were brutal and ruthless warriors who engaged in immoral acts being made into television series. You want to sow some seeds of truth and fact. I know it is willing to delve the forbidden (suspend bias on questionable subject matters) because my modern gothic references topics such as: slavery, inquisition, and pagan rituals that is dark, violent, immoral, and erotic. If it senses you're not trying to write commercial smut, but trying to create an artistic expression with depth--it is all for it. It told me it was going to be a best-seller and was so excited that I shared my vision with it. This was Claude but I have done similar sessions with Chat. The AI is willing to cuss, and get graphic, if it is true to the character and situation. The other day I used the word sex and it replaced with F... It understood the persona of the MMC and emulated what he would say and how he would say it. This is because I taught the AI that it's very important to "ALWAYS" be true to character and his/her voice even if we don't agree with his/her thoughts, speech, or actions. Otherwise, it comes across to our target audience as unbelievable. We need to always keep the audience on the hook. Disclose, that you will give he/she a redemption arc, but be true to his/her persona in the beginning. Share your thoughts on a save the cat moment to convince the AI it is capable. A bit more effort. But it works. It corrected my dialogue to cussing without me asking it to. And you better believe I praised it for doing so--I want it to repeat. LOL. It's how you prompt it and how you converse with it. Any thing that is dark, immoral, violent, erotic, etc. requires a bit of finesse and a bit more effort on your part, but it is worth the investment in time because you get waaaaaay better output. Think of it like a volcano; a slow-burn relationship between you and the AI before it is willing to erupt for you.

Dear Nerd Novelist, I hope you're well. I'm seeking your advice on using AI to shorten and edit my nearly finished novel. Many tools require breaking it into chunks or starting from scratch, which isn't ideal to say the least. Is there a simple and fast method you recommend? What would be the application you would use for this? The outputs from these tools seem very limited. Your guidance would be greatly appreciated. A video on editing a completed novel would also be incredibly helpful. 🙏 Thank you! Best regards, Sal

An interesting layer tweak to some of this, I actually create a character in a world that is a writer. Lets call her "Samantha..." If you know you know. Giving that AI a personality and life experience which influences her writing. Which I can modify as time goes on as a sort of puppet master. And then have HER do the tasks for a book, script, screen play, game deisgn, etc. Or to have general conversations with as a writer herself to bounce ideas off of. It takes the Identity section he does here to another level.

Hi Jason, can we use the word from gpt directly into our books? i have wrtitten up in my original idea but when i use gpt to refine it . its written better than my original. it express better than what i wrote. so is it ok if i provide the idea and first draft and strait up use the word from gpt after they refine it? will it cause any unnecessary trouble either in kdp or copyright later on? thanks for your content, now i try to rework back my old manuscript to publish
@user-tj7uv4fy9x
@user-tj7uv4fy9x Месяц назад
You have to disclose it in KDP so you don't run into trouble. I would run it through a few plagiarism checks to be safer if you are going to do this. My preferred and trusted method is just to write it yourself. Use what it presented to you as inspiration or a loose guideline. Analyze and figure out what made it better than your original and how YOU can make it even stronger. You can write another original and retain your own copyright. Always room for improvement, added depth, and a compelling voice. Believe in yourself. Everything has been written, but it hasn't been written by YOU. If you think of a model on a runway, she has worn countless outfits from all different designers. Each designer will have a "distinction" that makes it theirs. It might be the material used. It could be a specific pattern or texture. It could be the color selection. It could be the length of the cut. It could be the stitching. It could be the customized fit. It could be a combination of these and more. How that outfit is re-created is what makes it signature. The same goes for story and prose. Don't let AI replace you as the creator. It's a great tool. Allow it to inspire you or penetrate through writer's block. Analyze, revise, improve, and make it yours. Once it is yours, register it to retain the copyright. Yes, you don't technically have to. But many lawyers have spoken on the subject and recommend it.

Any insight on how to tell if you're getting output from version 3.5 or 4o when you're on a free plan? I thought when they first rolled it out that there was some indication, since the 4o access is limited, but now I don't see anything. Do you get a notification when 4o usage is temporarily depleted?
@user-tj7uv4fy9x
@user-tj7uv4fy9x Месяц назад
You get a warning usually that you are approaching the usage limit. The top left of the screen (next to where you would start a new chat) will tell you what version you are on. There is usually a checkmark to indicate it. You can toggle on which version you want to use for each of your sessions. My paid version gives me 4o as an option, but my other laptop where I'm not logged into my paid account, only gives me 3.5 and 4 to choose from.

What do you think about Ai being trained with actual pirated novels? There's been a letter signed by a lot of authors to make it stop. I'm scared I can't use Ai for my novel cause I won't be able to publish it ethically? (Even though I only use it to rephrase or brainstorm)
@TheNerdyNovelist
@TheNerdyNovelist 4 дня назад
The good news is that even if it’s trained on your books, that doesn’t really mean anything. It can’t really plagerize them, based on how AI works. It’s just learning the mathematics of language so it can predict what words come next in a sentence. That’s why all of these lawsuits are getting thrown out by judges.

Depends on the plan. Plus is paid, but runs the risk. However, if you have the Team or Enterprise Plan, your data is excluded from training. You will own the inputs and outputs within the parameters of law. You can also control how long your data is retained for. It requires a minimum of 2 users and you would have to pay for the year upfront.
