The film discovers several days of the life of Eastern Chukotka nomadic reindeer herders' traditional movement to new pastures and the role of traditions in saving the people and the crash of inorganic novelties of the XX century
Thank you for sharing such an amazing way of life... It is sad that they lost two of their strongest men... I hope they have been able to adapt since, and continued with their heritage... Karina is such a beautiful little baby girl... Thank you,
UTMOST RESPECT TO YOU GUYS, MAY YOU HAVE YOUR WAY OF LIFE LONG AFTER THE MODERN CIVILISATION IS GONE. YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING TO DESTROY THIS EARTH AND THIS IS YOUR RIGHTFUL PLACE. .
Thank you for this beautiful documentary. I have seen snippets of it on other channels but this is the first time that I have seen it in its entirety. I am amazed by the resilience of these people.
Little Karina is so adorable! I really admire the resilience and strength of Chukotka nomadic reindeer herders! May God bless you! Greetings from Brazil!

Imagine there's no colonialism, no missionaries, no conquerors, no discoverers, no ideologists... and the world will be as one... Weeping for all the indigenous groups all around the world. Wonderful job, thank you.
Amazing, and so very beautiful. It shocks me at times how hard ppl have to work every single day just to put food in their mouth. We as American's have been so pampered and spoiled by our government that if we were faced with a struggle that was anything close to being like what these strong ppl do as a fact of life, nearly the entire population would be wiped out. So, hats off and a bow to these strong, rare, and ever so beautiful indigenous people.
+Dessi Hall I wouldn't agree americans or modern developed nations are spoiled. we just adapted (or didn't) to a different life. Chaucha wouldn't make it in a world where people steal or pay bills and build life or carrier. or would be taking Prozac or Zoloft. I didn't see a frown or worried face. seems that kind of life is actually easier on persons spirit.
Dessi Hall I was thinking the same thing. It makes my personal hardships seem meniscule in comparison. The Tundra people have my utmost respect and admiration.
@@jovosedlar agreed. there's even a stereotype in russia that the chukchi are stupid because back in the soviet days when their property was taken away, they had a hard time adjusting to a different lifestyle, and were quite ignorant about modern technology and things like that. I think it goes both ways.
Angelic Stormz, FYI Reindeer do not have horns!!! they are antlers and are shed yearly, additionally they are a herd animals this means they live, feed and migrate together.
I agree...people should leave them alone & ONLY intervene if help is needed...these are strong, peaceful people, usually asking nothing of others...they want their live preserved & passed onto their children. We may not understand why they prefer this lifestyle, but it's theirs & not for others to question or try to interrupt. ♥
A hard hard life I wouldn't make it with leaving as they do and I've been living 22 years in snow country. Our children need to see how this people live. I'm blessed all my children work and have done well. Thank you Father I am grateful for my life 🙏
What they need IS "commercial". When Chukotka reindeer meat starts appearing in the organic section of Fresh Fields is when I'll know they stand a fighting chance.
I was wondering how they feed the herds in the winter months?. Very good film. Maybe today they are not out in the cold working that way any more. Good Luck
Thank you. This for many us is our past including in all those ice ages which came back and back across Europe. We lived in harmony with nature leaving no trace, something we don;'t manage today. It was very special to hear from the grandmother as she has so much detail about the past which could be usefully recorded and to learn that those who kept the old ways were the ones ultimately did better after the removal of communism. It was lovely to see the baby and sad to hear 2 of the men had died since. They were speaking Russian I think - did the old languages go? In Canada those peoples have kept their native languages.
This needs English translation. I only speak English and so do many other RU-vid users. Have English translations and your ratting will increase 1000 times. Its still good to watch.
they keep Karina in the fur envelope so long, how do they change her (if she pees or poop)? It s interesting to know about child hygiene in such a brutal weather conditions
Inna Ivanova. i was also wondering what they used for her diapers. and thats incredible they just handed her it looks like a piece of fish and shes knawing on it well mama nos what shes doing ☺
Really awesome. Hope they have more sex and increase their numbers. It looks like there's more than enough reindeer meat for a bigger tribe, but not enough hands to take down and prop up the yaranga fur curtain tents - which is really impressive
Hi, wonderful documentary, J love this people, J spent 10 days with the Evens from Yakoutie (2014), J spent 10 days with Nénets Yamal (march 2015), Is there one turist agency able to purpose a trip in Chukotka? J am french, sorry for my bad english, thank you for your answer.
+GreenCanvasInteriorscape The door (aperture) in the dwelling of nomads is, usually, open for an exit of a smoke and for access of light in the afternoon. Firewood is dry branches of bushes.
What is the main purpose of the herders? Is it to keep the herd healthy and growing with new areas to graze? Is the main food for the herders the reindeer? Is that the main purpose, to have a continuous food supply? Looks like thousands of reindeer.. do they sell the meat and skins at market?
Yes...I know this because my father-in-law was of mixed Saami and Suomi ancestry, and i learned about their culture from his son. They also remind me very much of Canada's own Inuit people!
Much like the saami used to be you mean? Saami culture is destroyed beyond recognition. And by the way, most of todays "saamis" are false, a vast majority of them are people who came here relatively recently, 1700s, 1800s and even 1900s, learned our language and voila, they are saami too, by magic it seems. They also got a foothold into reindeer husbandry early on, in the early to mid 1800s and immediately started to pressure the true saamis, using violence and threats. Most of the true saamis are long gone, succumbed to alcoholism, suicide etc, because they were pushed out of their ancient ways. I tell you, most of the reindeer herders in northern norway at least are not true saamis, vast majority of them. This ethnic shift is why todays reindeer business is FULL of conflicts, greed, violence, thefts, the lands are overgrazed, the reindeer are in very poor condition and the list goes on.. They aren't people of nature, simple as that, all they care about is having the biggest herd, pressuring others to gain lands, having power over others. Coincidentally the "big saami families" today also often have people in politics..
I have trouble reading sometimes even with my glasses, so please try to put your writing a little bigger than it is so I can read it when I can’t understand it please ! Thank you because I enjoy watching and reading learning from and trying to understand your videos, sometimes it’s so hard when I can’t see or make out the writing because it’s so tiny
It looks so cold in those tents. How far does the boy push his sister? How do they get food for the whole 4 seasons? Hard life. Why doesn't the Government give them more $ for herding.? Like all gov. In the US too
When this video is made? I wonder, how old is lifespan of those people, if those who were reported as dead in the end of film, they looked somewhat young.
due to the severe climate, poor health system and low social living standards the average life expectancy for a Chukchi is still only 45 yr. But statistics is very tricky because of high level infant's mortality. They have a lot of old people.
The deer eat moss. The groups apparently have various districts they go to each year and know enough not to overgraze each district. What I would like to know is what keeps the deer from just leaving the people!
i admire these people for being so tough and taking care of there familys even the women chew on there husbands shoes to get the leather soft thats nuts but very cool if the world was ending i would certainly want these guys to have my back dam maybe even find meca husband😉
I’m always amazed at the thought process of people who encounter an indigenous group of people who have lived a certain lifestyle for hundreds, even thousands of years and to tell those people “let us make your life easier and better.” It always works out that their life becomes worse because the items introduced to make life easier always cost money and then the people have to work more to get money and the more new goods brought in to make life easier cost more and more money so eventually people leave their lifestyle to go to cities to get money for goods to make life easier. However they are no longer living their traditional lifestyle and have low education so they only get crappy jobs and a very hard life of struggle always trying to get money. This leads many to drugs and alcohol. Yep let’s make their lives easier! I’d say let them keep doing what they have done for generations as it must have been working for so many to live that way!! Sure some small amount of technology is good but too much destroys the culture of a people.
These native people have to be admired just because they have been able to develop the skills to stay alive in such a brutal climate, I would hope that the Russian government would help the natives with health care and some better equipment.
Russia gives much more support for the ethnic minorities than the US for the native Americans, who, by the way, got mostly slaughtered within the last 2 centuries, or the UK for its Celtic minorities which also got slaughtered to 99% and mostly forgot their languages. Ethnic Russians don't live better and enjoy priveleges compared to these ethnic minorities, but the minorities enjoy some priveleges.
Another channel stole this entire documentary and made it look as if they did the recording! I remember because I commented on baby Karina and her fur envelope. This was a few months ago, so imagine my surprise when I saw this was uploaded over 10 years ago!
I do hope little karina re-members her grand mum, vera, I know first-hand what my mum in law went through at 12 years old feeding her brother milk she never had from her breasts..
