Great story about lives in Norway. Good to see that the herders are attempting to evolve by planning, studying and practicing their changing way of life and not sitting back to just blame others for their difficulties.
It's really not, this is nothing like life in (average) Norway. Sámi people represent less than 10% of our population, and are far from "the difficulties of Norwegian lives". The difficulties of your average Norwegian can be described as follows "pay (30% income) taxes without benefits".
Here is a suggestion, using a snowmobile and a small set of discs used for farming, take areas of the tundra and loosen the snow for the reindeer. You can use discs or harrows, this will break up the ice covered snow.
You heard that didn't you (5:50) ?!? NOT YET MODERNIZED ... I Guess us "People" of old, us Believers of OUR Heritage and not taking from the Place( Earth) to line our pockets with financial clout are considered to be Heathens then Right ?!?
Wow, Look like caribou but not caribou. Caribou males lose their antlers right after the rut in early winter, and only start to grow back starting in May.
It seems to me that the big problem is the ice that cover the lichens. The reindeers cannot break thorough.. What if they put them metal horse shoes, to make the ice breaking easier? Just saying.. 🤷♂️
Reindeer don't have feet like horses they don't have just one hoof they have 4 "toes" that make up their foot. I don't think they could ever wear a shoe.
Anyone know how they keep each herd separated among different owners, electronic borders? Each owner owns around 2000 deer, and the deer are allowed to gaze within a certain amount of land, hard to separate once they are mixed even though they may have different tags.
How do big ranchers, of cattle, in the USA distinguish their cattle, from other rancher's cattle, when allowed to graze on hundreds of thousands of acre of federal lands? I believe it's called branding , of some form
I know this might sound naive but would it be possible to put geo trackers on some of the reindeer and make it easier to locate them, when they first go looking for them. I really feel so sad for all these indigenous peoples all around the world who have all lived with nature and rely on it to forge out a living. Climate change was not caused by any of these people and it makes be so angry that large corporations and companies are wrecking the planet in this ceaseless drive for profit. I for one would be more than happy to reduce my standard of living if it meant that our planet and all these native peoples enjoyed a sustainable standard of living. Having a little less might mean that some have a little more and with that some dignity. Just a thought.
Climate change has no merit . The climate of the planet has change since the beginning of the planet. Decreasing carbon out put, actually harms plant life. Decrease it as much as these climate extremists want, and there will be less vegetation, that provides people and animals with oxygen..
@Dr Boom reindeer eat lichen on trees. If the problem was too many trees then reindeer would have died out thousands of years ago, since there are a lot fewer trees now than ever and its not just tree lichen that the forest supports there is a web of life at play. Humans didn't invent a better ecology they just invented a justification for destroying it.
@Dr Boom I am not basing the totallity of my knowledge of reindeer on some youtube video. The depetion of old growth forest has lead to reindeer eating food that is low quality for them and it is true that new growth (tree farms) have neither low quality or high quality food , but my point was that the old growth forest should not have been destroyed to make a few psychopaths rich in the first place.
@Dr Boom Since its important for you to be right you win, how stupid of me to question. I bow before you and your wisdom. Go forth and teach more unworthy turds such as myself if it is not a waste of your time to penetrate our thick skulls.
