Chauvet Obey 70 estimated cost = $150.00
20' custom made DMX cord approximately $20.00
VERY IMPORTANT!! Before you purchase this product have someone explain how to create scenes, chases, and demonstrate using light fixtures. Even if you have to pay a lighting technician for a short training session. Unless, you are a genius at electronics, etc. you may not understand how to operate this product!!
www.chauvetlighting.com/produc...
Part 1 covers using one light fixture, getting familiar with the values of lighting effects, and creating an individual scene.
If you only plan to use only 1, 2 or 3 lighting fixtures this may not be the product that you want to purchase, consider getting a more basic keyboard. The Obey 70 is a universal intelligent lighting controller. It allows the control of 12 fixtures composed of 32 channels each and up to 240 programmable scenes. Six chase banks can contain up to 240 steps composed of the saved scenes and in any order. Programs can be triggered by music, midi, automatically or manually. Channel assignments can be reprogrammed for ease of controlling different fixture. Almost all of your lighting will involve programming scenes, chases, etc.
Select Fixture #1
Use sliders 1 through 5 for creating a scene.
Slider 1 creates lighting effects for the desired colors
Slider 2 creates strobe
Slider 3 creates Auto program speed
Slider 4 Rotation
Slider 5 Dimmer (from no lighting to bright lights)
Turn the control panel on.
Turn off the "Black out" light
Select Fixture 1
Use the 5 sliders to create the desired lighting effect(s)
To create a scene:
Enter program mode (press and hold the program button for 3 seconds)
Select the fixture(s)
Use the sliders (to create the scene)
When the desired look has been achieved, press MIDI/ADD
Use Bank up/down to select a desired bank (30) possible to save the scene to.
Once you have navigated to the desired bank, press the Scene ( 1 - 8 ) to save the scene to.
All LEDs will flash to indicate that the scene has been saved.

Obey 70 Workaround to control up to 24 fixtures... Easy,,,, manual says to assign fixture 1 to channel 1 and fixture 2 to channel 33. Because each fixture can use 32 channels. I have 28 fixtures and pairing was just not working out. A very helpful guy from Chauvet explained this.... Use page B to add 12 more fixtures... Set fixture 1 to 1, 2 to 17, 3 to 33, 4 to 50 and so on. Now you can control fixture 1 on Page A #1 and fixture 2 on Page B #1. All your doing is splitting the 32 channels available per fixture to 16. First 16 on Page A and next 16 on Page B. I set up 12 lights on the back wall of the stage to Page A in the normal 1=1, 2=33 and so on settings. For the front of stage lighting I set that up on Page B... Fixture 13 to channel 17 and fixture 14 to channel 50 and so on. The only limitation is now each fixture is limited to 16 channels. Since most fixtures only use 6-8 channels there is no difference. But I have one fixture that uses 24 channels. !! Easy, put it last in the group and leave the full 32 channels available. I found this info to be extremely helpful as my search for a 24 fixture controller ended with nothing affordable. I would assume this technique could be used on the Obey 40 as well, or any other controller with a Page B option. Hope this helps somebody as it helped me. Chauvet was extremely helpful so if needed don't hesitate to call them.

I may have to. And there has got to be a better way to organize DMX lighting. There may be so many things intuitively wrong with the system that there is no hope. Shame on USITT! I assume you are talking about using basic mode instead of advanced to get more fixtures controlled. Assuming I can eventually understand all of this, the thought of teaching it to someone else is abhorrent.

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad this helped. I will be posting more tutorials at some point but I have to figure out a few more things first. No one around here seems to know anything it seems so I have to figure it out myself.

Hi, thanks for this great review and demo! I was wondering if you know about the differences between the Hemisphere 5 and the 5.1? They both seem to be about the same price so I am not sure what improvements there are in the 5.1 model. Thanks again, Pete

Hello from Cole. I'm not familiar with the model in which you are inquiring. If you are able I highly recommend that you have someone demonstrate the differences. If you purchase the hemisphere I recommend getting a control panel so that you have more control of your lighting effects. One thing to also consider is how big of a place will you be using the light set in and how many you may need. Example... you may just want to have lighting effects on the ceiling or perhaps you want both the ceiling and floor. If you choose lighting effects for the ceiling and floor then you would have to consider also getting a trellis and buying 2 hemispheres. Also plan on your set up times for your shows...before you know it cables and cords will be everywhere. Keep in mind that if you have a lot of electrical equipment don't blow a fuse! Discuss with your client about the electrical hookups and plan on purchasing extension cords. Run your lighting separate from your sound.

How to you go PAST channel 32 to channel 33 and beyond? I have multiple fixtures of different types that I want to run on this exact board and I need more than 32 channels.

Almost organized. Are these color values? Tilt values? Pan values? If you make a video, you might mention the first device you touch…in the dark. Can we talk about what your lighting device is meant to do?

1:56 are you sure you don’t mean fader? The switch would mean ‘fixture 5.’ I think Chauvet is confusing. DMX controllers generally are, but Chauvet is worse. And they don’t help with their (lack of) instructions
