To my ears the JP274S and the Jupiter XO were very close, although the Jupiter XO sounded a little more "open" but still with a good "core". So, I would say the JP274S is the most bang for the buck with the caveat that it depends on how the playing characteristics compare - not just the tone. I expect you would have a beautiful tone on a garden hose. Would sure like to hear you play my circa 1977 Besson compensation euphonium.

Unless you’re as good as Matonizz the difference in the Sterling and the XO is about $4K. The XO was better, but not 200% better.

I 100% agree, it's not "that" close tbh. I wouln't buy it though as it's a waste for a begginer probably, but I wasn't even watching the video(just hearing on the side) and when I heard it I was like oh boy the difference! Which one is this? It's just so much more vibrant!

I could hear a clear difference in tone between each of the first three euphs, but not too much of a difference between euph 3 and euph 4, atleast not 4000 dollars of difference.

The most interesting thing to me between the Nasir Ali and the Gemeinhardt is the difference in slotting tendencies. The Nasir Ali rides high on the slot, and the Gemeinhardt has a tendency to really sag on the pitch, making it less favorable in my opinion to listen to, and yet to the untrained ear, the drooping pitch can sound darker and more euphonium-like. Still, as the proud owner of a JP-274, in my opinion, it wins the value contest, from the perspective of how much bang you get for your buck!

First of all, you are an excellent player and a great ambassador for the euphonium community, many thanks for that! Personally I prefer the warmer and darker sound of the compensated euphonium's you have tested, but I always loved playing on my own non-compensated Besson 765 International (yes, it takes some "lip compensation" here and there...). But to make a full comparison, would it also be possible to compare these instruments in the low range? Thanks!!

Nice comparison. I would love to see a similar comparison with some notes in the lower register for the fullness aspect of the overall sound. Also, just want to say, you do a wonderful job of bringing attention to a beautiful and often ignored and not widely recognized instrument. And you seem to have a teacher's heart. Kudos and thanks.

Honestly, the cheap one sounded surprisingly good for that price point. Its obviously hard to make that judgement without knowing how hard it to make it sound that good, but the difference in tone quality compared to the difference in price makes me think it might be a worthwhile purchase for a middle school player.

@naturematthe

From what I could hear, both intonation and tone got better the more expensive the instrument was, although the difference between the Nasir Ali and the other ones was the most significant. I'm still surprised how good (read: not bad) the first one sounded, would love to hear the euphonium I've been playing for over two years now (Monzani MZEP-1150, compensating, 549€) in comparison to your Jupiter when both are played by a professional player. I'm still pretty convinced that a more expensive instrument shows its qualities the most when being played by a skilled player, while a beginner will usually sound relatively similar on low-end and high-end instruments.

The nasir ali didn't sound as good. It might be a good one for a beginning player who might not stick with it. But one thing you cannot test in this video is how durable the horn is. I bought an inexpensive made in China euphonium when I was exploring switching from trumpet to euphonium. It worked well at first. Of course it was horribly out of tune, but that was mostly corrected with the tuning slides. But as time wore on the linkages on the rotary valves began to wear out. Soon I not only had a euphonium, but a full percussion section as well with all the clicking and clacking of the valve linkages. Moral of the story, not all the deficiencies of a cheap horn will show up immediately.

Amazing how good they all sound in your hands. I certainly tell that you were trying to hard to sound good on both the Nasir and Gemeinhardt .... the JP was the first in the serious to be taken seriously as a "good" horn, that's when the true warmth of the instrument started to really come through. If cash was of no option...I'd buy the XO (it's a beaut) but realistically the JP would serve my needs.

The manufactures retail number versus actual cost, in some cases it's 100% markup, for wiggle room for dealers, to move product, $6500 v $3250, proposed and negotiated figures vary from store to store, the cheapo sounds not all that cheap!!! The audiences are mostly tin eared anyway, couldn't tell a good horn from a cheapo.....

No matter what spending $6500 on a chunk of metal is absolutely absurd. If you're good at the instrument you can make anything sound nice. Imagine how you'll feel once it get's dented or stolen. Most people don't even make $6500 a year, imagine spending a person's entire low wage salary on an instrument. It's ridiculous. It's the equivalent to buying a fucking Bugatti as a daily. Nice playing though!

Algirdas, you sound great on ALL of the horns, but what did you seriously think of the Nasir Ali? Was it free blowing? You made it sound terrific! I played Euphonium up through college and was a Music Education major for a couple of those years, but haven't played in a while (around 30 years now). I never owned my own horn as I always played school owned instruments, but have played professional level Besson horns and a Willson Euphonium, but it's been years ago. I am considering getting back into playing and have thought about possibly buying something like the Nasir for now to get myself reacquainted with the instrument since it's been quite a while. I still have my Schilke small shank mouthpiece I could use. What do you think? Is that horn even worth considering? Not for concert performances, but just to get restarted on the horn. Thank you!! LOVE your channel by the way!!

Hey Matonizz. I've been reading through a lot of forums and threads, as well as watching and rewatching your reviews on the euphos. But for a while now, I've been caught between the JP274s and the Wessex Dolce. Due to living in an area of Australia that doesn't have a JP stocking store nearby, it's hard to drive to a store to playtest it. I wanted to ask about your opinion between the two, the tones of each, the pros and cons, and whether you prefer one over the other? The JP is apparently thicker compared to the Dolce, and I'll need a horn that will be pretty durable/repairable. Also, have you had any experiences with the Austin Custom Brass Doubler Euphonium? It seems to be a good choice too.

I guess if you’re a college or high school student on a budget, that JP would be the best “bang for your buck”. If you’re looking to go professional, then the Jupiter horn would be the best thing to purchase of course. If I’m a middle band director trying to outfit my students on a school horn, with a limited budget, then I’d go for that $1000 non compensating Euph. That white one isn’t that bad, but I’m guessing that you’re finessing the hell out of that horn. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be going around playing on that horn. I’d get roasted by every single being on the planet. Kudos though!

What is most interesting is how good you can sound through cheaper instruments - beginner & intermediate players are not really going to be held back by these instruments. Also - and I may be biased because I have a JP374st - I think the 274 is pretty close to the XO - And the 374, being heavier, might be even closer. I suspect the JP will be the best return on money spent because it should be quite durable,

The last two sounded a bit different but I wouldn't say either was better or worse. The non-compensating one I could tell that he had to put more effort in centering the pitch, even in the high register (in the video recorded lines I didn't see him use the fourth valve, but the comensating ones the lower harmonies were more in tune).
