There are some really cheap yixing teapots on aliexpress. Are they any good?
In this video I will break down if a cheap €13 aliexpress yixing teapot is worth buying.
We will look at the following characteristics:
- Looks (does the teapot look nice?)
- Function (is it usable in a gong fu tea ceremony?)
- Safety (is this clay safe for daily use?)
- Taste (does it brew a nice cup of tea?)
At the end of the video we will give a recommendation if you should buy this teapot.

I got a new teapot today and am so excited to try it out, so it's fun to see how you are trying your new pot. I hope mine goes better! Mine was not so cheap, so I may have better luck.

I have a fake Yixing for about the same price. It gives the same "drying" feeling to teas. It also had long-lasted wet clay smell. I am not using it out of safety concerns.

If it has that smell, that means it hasn't been fired hot enough. It won't be dangerous, just not especially pleasant!

Nice video thank you for your insight. I made similar tests in the past and had a wide range of results. Zhuni seems to not impact the taste by much, while my zini does round up the tea a bit and removes some bitterness but also some high notes and duan ni even more. I guess it does have to do with the porosity of the clay. I also compared my +100€ pots to a ~30€ pot from Taobao, and taste-wise they are really really similar, the small differences they have seem to be coming from the clay but not in a negative way. But the price difference is really noticeable in the smoothness of the pour, the overall manufacturing and finish. On the other hand, I once bought a really cheap teapot in a local Chinese supermarket, its glased but some parts inside the spout, for example, were left out, on this one I get a weird strong smell of cheap clay in a way plant pots to smell like so I don't use that one for tea. Overall I would say don't go below 30€ when you are ok with not having perfect manufacturing, and to be safe buy our pot in a local store so you can inspect it :) .

Thank you for your kind reply. Yixing is a big topic and with this video I barely scratched the surface. What I didn't say is that the pot I'm comparing it to (the 150,- one) is that it is from geniune yixing clay from the original mine. When you say your 100+ pots taste the same than the 30,- taobao ones makes me believe they are all from clay not from the original mines. What's also a thing is that if you buy a 100+ pot from a western seller, he could have just bought the 30,- taobao pot and sold it to you for 100,-! Lots of things to consider. If you have pointers/links on pots you like tested, let me know. Enjoy your tea ;)

@@leaveswithhugs thanks for your answer. Yeah that can be true, it's hard to say if a western seller is selling you a 100% true yixing pot. The 100€+ ones are from trusted sources, so I don't think they sold me "fakes", but like you said correctly I'm sure they bought it for less than 100€ somewhere in China but that's no problem they have to make money and I pay them for the import and their knowledge. But maybe all of them are not true yixing, then at least I want to still think they are and keep enjoying the tea I drink from them hahhahha :D. I don't own a chaozhou or jianshui pot, would be super interesting if you made a video comparing those Clay's to yixing maybe with a blind taste again?! :) Can't wait to see more from you, cheers.

you should boil the tea pot in hot water 30 min and then boil it one more time with some tea that you drink. I think the taste will better. and i think you can not know what cheap what expensive

I bought one at similar price point and agree to the tongue drying effect. This is definitely not safe for consumption use. I also bought matching cups as well. I'll open a dispute on aliexpress and hopefully can get my money back.

I don't know man that spout looks pretty average to me. Above average, really. Especially if it has a great personality.

Surprising... someone with a storefront is anti cheap goods in lieu of their own cheap marked-up goods. A true comparison would have been with two brand new teapots, both seasoned the same way, with a sample size of 4 or more test cups, there is a 50% chance of simply GUESSING which is which using only two cups.

At the time of recording I didn't have any teapots in my store and thought this would just be a fun and informative video to put out there. ( I also wanted to know if it was any good and if I could spot the difference) I can see how it now seems to be a sales tactic but that never was the intention. As for the way I tested it.. I would love to make the experiments more scientific, season more, get pots of the same shape, do double blind tests etc but the issue is time. Just to shoot and edit this video took 15+ hours. This is also the reason I havent done a video in so long (even though I have alot of ideas lined up!). It's a pretty time consuming business. Adding 4 cups is a good idea. I will do that the next time I do something like this. Wishing you well and enjoy your tea!

@@leaveswithhugs I have to say that is a solid response, I would love to see an in-depth approach with double-blind results. Maybe have a few subjects do their assessments. Possibly without telling them it's a cheap pot, or telling them it's a comparison of two expensive pots to remove bias. My position on this personally isn't pro cheap teapot nor expensive teapot. I would just like to see if it's a subjective issue or if there is a substantial difference. I assume the only upside to the cheap pot being the same would be the possibility of saving myself and others money on gear that we could then apply to buy more Tea. Another point of order would be the sample size, to answer the question of are ALL cheap teapots are subpar? possibly tossing one or two more into the fray to mitigate it is a one-off or a trend with lesser-priced teapots. Again I appreciate the fact you took the time to reply, and wish you the best!
