Thanks for the review. A few years ago I bought a very simple video magnifier for about $25 from Amazon for spot reading labels. I only need 2 or 4x magnification for this task and it does the trick. But it doesn't pay to go cheap if you are expecting to do more than spot read.

I have a very similar model. It works well enough but definitely ready for an upgrade. These less expensive ones work well enough, but the contrast isn't great and the LED glare is painful. Good for a budget, but definitely worth an upgrade if you can afford it :)

Biggest drawback is the glare factor an where it makes text darker if set on the text

Im in Africa with Stargurds and this magnifier is the only one i could get my hands on for $8000 dollars. And i it makes it possible to do my job as a visually impaired person. It works well but the battery is weck. Had to replace it every 2 months

Thanks for this video and great review! Do you have a specific recommendation for a digital magnifier for an elderly person? I'm looking for something for my 86 year old mom who has macular degeneration. She's not computer savvy at all, but I did get her a Kindle and she loves that for reading. Do you recommend a simple, affordable digital magnifier for someone like my mom. It needs to be simple to operate and she would generally use it for looking at bills and mail. Maybe something she could easily carry in her purse. Preferably something in the $200 dollar or lower range. Thanks for your help!

Well, you have these inexpensive Chinese magnifiers that you can buy on Amazon. The problem is, like I talked about in the video, they’re not very good. if you want a good quality, small handheld video magnifier, the cheapest one I know of is about $550. You could also look at buying a used device either on websites like eBay, or from an actual distributor.

My husband who has Stargardt's has the same exact one that he has had for several years. He uses it at work but I think it's time for an upgrade. I keep looking at your videos trying to find some sort of middle ground I don't want to spend $500 on one but I think I can spend as much as $200- $250 and I think it would be fine any recommendations? Which one is similar to this but better?

I have a video of a crime in my home on my cell phone. Can I get help with magnification since it involves a crime? Or do I need to buy one of these? I'm not tech savvy at all.

I bught a cheap 3.5 inch portable digital video magnifier off Amazon a few years ago and yeah it just doesn't work as well as my 5 inch Eschenbach magnifier or my Looky 10 magnifier. I think I've also seen this portable digital video magnifier with a different brand name I think the other brand name for this magnifier was Koolertron.

Does anybody that has star guards ever experience blue flashes of light. They are more like a loading sign on a device where the light moves in a clockwise Circle and kind of traces itself. It happens a lot when I turn lights on and then randomly through the day while my eyes are open or closed. I asked my doctor at the Indiana Glick Eye Institute she suggested head scan LOL

Yes, this happens to me all the time and exactly as you described. I also describe it as a loading symbol!! Apparently it's common in retinal vision loss. I guess it's where the eye is trying to use the cells that aren't working. Or something like that. Some people think it's similar to Charles Bonet syndrome.

Well I am glad I'm not the only one but sucks other people are dealing with it too LOL whether my eyes are open or I shut them they stay there. My doctor said probably could be sales dying and or misfiring but she also couldn't tell me definitively because she does not have stargards and stargard's patients aren't plentiful sometimes but I was left slightly frustrated. I feel better knowing I'm not alone when it comes to Blue loading symbols.

Well when rehab refuses to buy these things for people you know people have to kind of be resourceful and buy this stuff. You know somebody who's on SSI will have to save up a few tracks and then they'll go out and buy it.
