@IceMonkey82

If you take the first piece after making the first cut and flip it, then place that cut over the wood strip, you can push your second piece up against the first to get the perfect distance for the initial cut in the second piece. Be sure to remove the first piece before making the cut to avoid grazing the edge. Then flip the first piece back over and continue with both pieces.

@@edhaskell1554, not following your thinking. No mention is made of touching the blade height, which would change the depth of cut. This method is to position the stock for a cut that matches the size of the first finger. What better gauge for that than the very finger itself?

I'd just like to make a comment about Ridge Carbide. On Stumpys recommendation I bought a blade from them. I had a mental malfunction filling out my address and completely missed the drop down box for what state I live in. By default it went with the first selection which if I remember right was District of Columbia. Half an hour later I got a phone call from them trying to straighten out my address. That is excellent customer service. They were literally working on my order within half an hour of me ordering and called just to verify and correct my mistake. The blade did arrive very quickly and is beyond comparison from the factory blade I was using. I feel like a doctor who was using a butter knife and is now using a precision scalpel. The difference between the two blades is astounding. Thank you Stumpy for the excellent videos and advice.

It may be possible to mess up the second cut (the first on the second board) by misaligning it. If we place use the first board on the jigg by placing the small side toward the blade, the blade should cut just past the first board. We can then place the second board next to the first ont to make a parfect second cut. I hope that I was clear, English is not my first language.

Thickness Of Wood: i was so focused on making the jig i realized later that yes i can create the jig for diff size joints (1/4” in this video…1/2” for me) but the depth of cut has to match the thickness of the wood you’re using. in my situation i wanted 1/2” joints on 3/4” wood so i adjusted my depth of cut to 3/4” and it worked perfect 🤙🏽😊

Quick and simple: used this a technique a bunch. Thank you for sharing. One suggestion: Be careful to not make the grove in your backer board higher than the final cuts. You need that backer to support the wood or it will tearout (horrible if using plywood). Better to be a little short and sneak up on it until you get the fit you want than over cut and back down.

I love the video. Quick and effective solution. Several other videos I've watched are way more complicated. Shouldn't the height of the bit/blade be determined by the thickness of the material? If I'm using a 3/8 bit and cutting 1/2 inch thick material the fingers of the joint will be too short if I only raise the cutter to the height of the width of the bit. Unless you're talking about doing it in multiple passes only cutting the equal amount of material as the blade/bit is thick with each pass until reaching the proper depth for thicker material. (I hope I explained that coherently enough.)

I’ll be making this today. I’ve been cutting box joints with a similar jig using my router table. I find that the wood sometimes tends to shift/twist slightly when the bit makes contact even though I have the workpiece clamped and I hold it tightly. I’m hoping the table saw method will eliminate that. Update: made the jig. Easy to do. I still get a slight twist of the workpiece as it hits the dado stack, but it’s far less than on my router. Using a trigger clamp mitigates that, whereas with the router that’s not quite sufficient. Fit was quite good. Setup of the while thing is far easier on my table saw that on my router. In fairness, I don’t have a router lift, so fine tuning the height adjustment is fiddly. So, we know what that means…need a better router table and a nice lift. 😅
