Listed Below are the materials needed for this project.
Inexpensive, Easy, and Effective.
Unlike rotting wood and messy Styrofoam this is a perfect alternative!
I have spent weeks looking for an easy floor idea for our jon boat when the answer was really pretty easy. Most of what i came up with was marine plywood which is water resistant but it was extremely heavy and I wanted something that I could easily take out to clean out the bottom of the boat and to let the floor dry up and not start growing mold like what would happen in a permanent floor.
Overall I am very pleased with the floors performance thus far and we have been out on the bay a few times with my family of 5. It holds up great and the foam is surprisingly strong especially with the mat on top of it.
We are thinking of painting it the same color we are going to paint our boat for duck hunting and we spray painted a section and the mat does hold the paint just fine.
MATERIALS USED:
insulation boards (1 1/2 inch thickness): amzn.to/2phrWB1
Mat: amzn.to/2pOxSod
utility knifee: amzn.to/2pOo3GV
sharpie: amzn.to/2pdXV3Y
tape measure: amzn.to/2pOlwdt
T or straight edge: amzn.to/2pO66Gs
NOTICE: Please make sure you are selecting the right dimensions for the materials you purchase to fit YOUR boat! boat sizes vary.
Please throw a like and comment if this was of help to you!
UPDATE*** 4 years later and we still have this same floor in our boat. It has sat outside all through winter as well as the hot sun in the summer. Still 100%!

1240 Lowe here; I did the same thing with the Foamular Insulation Board. I believe I used the 250 flavor. I cut the sizes I needed to fit between the ribs of the floor between the back and middle bench. Instead of a rubber mat, I had a thin scrap piece of plywood that was the perfect size to fit that floor area. I hit it with a few coats of spray paint to help seal it, then I stretched astroturf over the top and secured with gorilla glue. They had rolls of astroturf/patio covering at Home Depot for $20 a roll. This works fine for me, it was cheap, I had the materials on hand, and if the wood shhts the bed one day, it never owed me anything. The turf doesn't get hot at all even in 90+ midday Summer sun. I sometimes fish barefoot and the turf is cool and feels good on your feet, better than standard Bass Boat floor coverings. IMO there's a ton of ways to mod Jon boats, everyone has a different approach or ideas. Though I would say, using the Foamular Board to fill the spaces between your floor ribs is the way to go regardless of what you cover it with. Safe Boating and Tight Lines, Cheers!

Dude... this was the best idea I saw on here. You deserve an award or something. It's stupid to screw with plywood and epoxy resin and glue and carpet and screws and, and, and, just for a floor. Horse stall mat will never rot from moisture or wear out. Best idea ever.

Awesome idea. EASY! I just ripped the carpet, plywood, and foam board out of mine (was all rotten and water logged). Just bought new foam board and wrapped in contractor bags to waterproof. Got the mats from tractor supply. Shouldnt add too much more weight than dry plywood but heavy enough to hold it all down without securing

I am doing another one this week. We live where there are a lot of resiviours within an hour. There are also some places where a bass boat isn't an option. One of those is the Illinois river. Every spring, the white bass spawn in the upper end but a large section of the river, above Lake Tenkiller is white rapids and impossible to use traditional methods. The options are a 2 man, kayak, inflatable, jon boat, or float tube. The jon boat has as shallow a draft as the inflatable and is a lot tougher. Sometimes the satisfaction of the project is as satisfying as the fishing. I'm a senior now and a $65,000 bass boat makes no sense. Conversions like this are fun, inexpensive, and you can always change them.

BE WARNED. Black horse stall mats absorb and retain heat like you wouldn't believe. I bought a mat from Tractor Supply to cut up into strips and use as AR500 steel target hangers. It was 98 degrees Fahrenheit that day and the mats were in a stack outside. I carried one from the top of the pile to my truck which was only about 30 feet away and I blistered my fingers. Those mats should be just fine on a cold, cool, or maybe even temperate day but they'll cook your feet on a hot day and make that boat deck miserably hot.

Thank you for sharing! I am on the hunt/about to get a 1436 and this will be in the top 3 first mods done to the rig. Once I get a chance to overhaul the whole thing... I will go back and add 1/8" diamond plate (with the foam still underneath) ... held down with some aluminum Rivnuts to the ribbing. That way I can quickly take it back up at the end of each season for a freshwater rinse and another application of Fluid Film. I will be in almost 100% salt... and some brackish waters.

Okay so a fun fact, if you're worried about the capacity for withstanding pressure, Fomular (sold at home depot) lets you choose the rated psi (from 15 to 60 psi). For this example/calculation, I will use a 300lb man. So let's assume the 300lb man is standing on one foot. His foot size is 12"x3.5". Take 12*3.5 = 42. Divide his total weight by the square footage of his foot, 300/42 = 7.14 psi. So basically, even the lowest rated PSI of the pink foam will support a 600lb person on one foot, even without the mat.

This idea worked great on my deep V 14 foot aluminum Sea Nymph. I used two pieces of insulation in each section and left a space in between so any water, in the boat, can drain to the bilge area. Covered with 1/2 horse mat from Tractor Supply. Thanks!

I highly recommend the pink, gray or green closed cell foam board. I needed 1 3/4 to be level with the tops of the ribs. There are several guys on here that rebuild jon boats. One of them showed some of the pink closed cell foam and some boat pour foam that had been put in a boat 2 years prior under the floor and the pink stuff looked like new. The pour foam was full of water. Dont use the white Styrofoam. It will absorb water and crumble. The foam board laying in the bottom of a flat bottom ribbed bottom jon will allow water to drain in the ridges in the bottom of the boat. I found a sign shop that had alucobond sheets. 4x8 for $65 a sheet. About 28lb a sheet. Paint it, rhino line, eva foam, or just leave it, whatever you want. It will last forever.

Instead of the stall mat, the 4x8 pvc sheets that are like 1/4” thick or whatever(they are thin) work great and weigh less. Just secure it with some rivets, then slap some EVA foam on top and it’s nice to walk on, doesn’t get hot in the sun, and is easy to clean.

@airingfowled2535
@airingfowled2535 10 лет назад
Sounds great! The reason we didnt glue it down because we wanted to be able to take out the floor to clean the boat underneath and to let it dry out easier if we take in any water from waves!
@DonWilsondigginTimeUSA
@DonWilsondigginTimeUSA 10 лет назад
But if your boat takes on water... the foam and rubber will float without your boat...savey?
@airingfowled2535
@airingfowled2535 10 лет назад
Don Wilson yes that is true. Although we are not using the foam as floatation. I do believe every jon boat has foam underneath the seats and front deck that would act as floatation if the boat did ever begin to sink. If you did glue the foam down then that would be a great way to add extra floatation! We felt that being able to take out the floor would fit our needs better. Good idea though!!

could always put something down across the foam like a removable strap or strips of aluminum under the rubber. If she sinks you'll loose the rubber but the foam will stay in place.

Instead of the horse mat you can use a sheet of the rubber mat that is used under shower drain pans. A lot thinner and lighter and gets rid of the clunking every time you do anything in the boat. Also you can cut most rigid foam insulation board with a hot wire. Nice work on the boat.

I was in the market for something to line the floor on my boat project, but now thinking about it, black would not be my first choice. Mainly because the sun beating down on it allday while fishing would possibly burn the shit out of my feet if I were barefoot (I kick my shoes off while fishing some times) I'm thinking about using some of those cushy floormats used on concrete for in front of a work bench in my shop. They're light and would work perfect to glue onto the floor of the boat. I believe they even come in rolls too.

How is a foam floor holding up under weather conditions I'm more concerned about it getting waterlogged do you have any problems with the foam holding moisture if so that could be a major problem it would add a lot of weight to the boat once it got waterlogged just curious of how waterproof that foam flooring is?

Easy to remove if need to. Elected not to screw in permanently. Got idea from Airing Fowled. approx. $76.00 and 50 pounds added. 3/4" rubber not needed. Put in 1648 Alumacraft NCS. Good traction.

What did you use to hold it down? Like if boat took on water, what keeps the floor from coming out of the boat and keeping it in the boat (if you were to sink boat)

Would it be possible to use this along side with wood to convert to a bass deck with seats?

@Billy Pope... sorry it will not let me reply, but it does not squish under my dads foot and he weighs around 200. It will last a very long time! I was skeptical at first but it actually surprised me. You could buy a small section just to test it out if you want to be 100% sure but im almost positive that you would be very pleased!
