To undo the straps in MC1 you have to "distance" the rubber pieces that hold straps in place. It's actually a clever design, because the strap system when it breaks, you can replace it, and the straps won't loosen when you wear a mask.

5:16 My Father has that gasmask still from his Soldier Years. He wasn´t in war but he was still training in the "Bundeswehr". It has actually survived pretty well. He still has his Metal Tube Container to store it. The Filter seems to still work.Theres a tiny crack in one of the glasses though. Its awesome to have a gasmask though. EDIT: Bundeswehr is the German Military.

To be fair, making the masks as cheap as possible was the right decision in the end considering civil gas masks were never really used(at least i can't think of a historical situation in which they were)

I actually like the GP-5 because it gets a good seal without any straps. As long as you don't have to talk to anyone, and you've got a new gost filter, you're pretty well off. I got the full kit straight from a Russian warehouse for $5, and it's the one I have in my car 24/7/365.25. The filter is bad, I know, but it would at least be something.

Recently bought a GM-54 that’s in very good condition, you could potentially use it if you put a filter on, but I bought mine for display purposes.

I’m pretty sure it is a gm54, the inter war masks were basically like you said just a canvas material with a slight rubber coating on it. Also the exhale valve on the ones from the thirties was basically just a little grate that eventually got covered with the little pine hole design that yours has

M76 Norwegian Civil Defence Gas mask. It was my first gas mask. :) They were cheap, but I liked it.

I don't know if it had a designation but one of the cheapest "respirators" I've ever seen was an example at RAF Boscombe Down. It was a form of anti gas visor with built in respiratory protection. All it consisted of was a canvas blindfold with two square pieces of clear plastic sewn roughly where one's eyes would be and a nose cover with a piece of cloth socked in a neutralising chemical (same concept as the anti gas hood) covering the wearer's nostrils. That's it. It was apparently used as an emergency backup respirator in the event of the standard gas mask being compromised when in a hostile environment to give the wearer a few valuable seconds to retreat to safety. It worked by the wearer breathing in through the nose (and chemical neutraliser) and exhaling through their mouth. It was cheap simply because of how little there was to it. It only covered the eye area and nose with one elastic strap to hold it in place. It also relied on you breathing the right way with it on. Talk about the others not having an exhale valve or having awkward strap systems, at least you didn't have to think how to breath when wearing them. XD

I took off the safety pins on my folkgasmask type 32 and put it in it's " Canister/Box" with the gas mask. (Safety Pins made me triggered when i was adjusting the size or whatever it's called of the mask)

Was thinking of getting the M75 (Civie) but then I saw that they still had good M70s (PMG clone) on storage at the milsurplus store I go to in hungary, darn for 10$ instead of the 7$ and got an asbesthos military hazzard in a can and a '89 civie "clear" version wich is adequate for most stuff

I have very long hair, and no issues with the gp-5. I just tie my hair into a low bun at the base of my neck and there's no issue whatsoever.

For Hungarian gas mask, as far as I know, size 4 (which clearly marked on the face between the eyepieces) is the largest one. It's just too big for you to wear. That's the reason it can't seal up: rubber can not even contract enough being in one piece with non-compressible cloth. But quite nice collectible piece, really!

Growing up i had a GP-6 mask with that metal ring on the nose that vibrates when you talk and makes you kinda sound like a robot. Everyone else I knew had a GP-5. My friend Erik, who later became pro-nazi, was insistent i must've somehow modded my mask myself, refusing to believe GP-6 was really made that way. I still have two GP-5, a hose, some satchels, modern filters, but very curious where my GP-6 and it's green filters went. [Edit:] And im still not sure what the metal ring on nose was meant to be used for...

Well , the GP5 may be cheap, but to Romanian industrial version MD series was CHEAPER as it took out the butterfly valve and made the valve assembly even smaller and thinner!

I think I have the East German gas mask and it smells like old wood glue. I also have a US civil defense civilian gas mask that is very similar to the Swedish mask. The civil defense one is in really good condition for being over 50 years old and of cheapish design.
