Cheap Backup power Hack for Load Shedding/Rolling Blackouts! 

I would suggest getting a cheap Solar charge controller 10A one will work perfectly(Pwm) . Get a old 19v laptop charger. Everything will set you back R300-R500 Connect the laptop charger to one of the solar inputs +/- on the Controller. Connect the ups cables to the with the battery cables on the input . This will ensure if you use bigger batteries that it will charge effectly and not damage the battery. I use to do the same as this but it decreases the batteries life span. The Solar charge controller just helps to manage the battery better. Lead acid batteries has 50% effectiveness where as lithium has 80-95% which means you can drain it much more and get more out of it and you can just set the cut off voltage on the controller according to the batteries specification. This works 100%.I would recommend while the unit is open too put some tape over the warning buzzer so it not drive you nuts when in use.
