In this video, I join several other Instagram and RU-vid bike builders to compete in the Cheap Bike Build off. An ugly paint job, a stuck seat post and a bottom bracket that didn't want to come off was not going to stop me from completing this build. #cheapbikebuildoff

I like what you did bringing an old bike back from the dead , especially on a budget , respect to anyone keeping old bikes alive

I love the color scheme. The blue rear tire and seat to match the frame. The red front tire and grips to match the frame. And the golden decal is perfect. Awesome restoration!

I didn’t think the paint job would look good but the finished product changed my mind. Good work here.

I just got a bike with a stuck seat post (steel on steel).. i was a lil worried.. cause i got it on a trade and i started thinking that i got the shit end of the trade.. i sprayed penetrating oil on the top of tube let it sit over night.. then i took out crank and sprayed lube from the bottom of seat tube.. turned with pipe wrench and it broke loose.. what an exciting feeling.. the bike had been sittings out in the weather for a long time.. the saddle had moss growing on it..

the new stuff is aluminum oxide with a little bit of rust, oewww you got lucky with the seatpost, coming out relatively easy, nice.i grease up all my aluminum seatposts in steel frames every year, scared they get stuck! some pretty scary videos out there on you tube, where they have to use drain cleaner and other goo to dissolve the aluminum, yuk

really surprised there would be an aluminum seat post in a steel frame. add a little water and it is basically a battery, the result being galvanic corrosion, a very rapid oxidation. usually you would put another metal in between like stainless or brass. anyway, another sick build and I love he paint job. I have to try a toothbrush fade lol

Super cool. I've got an old bicycle in the garage been there a long while I think I'll fix it up. Ross dune commander single speed coaster break 26 inch mountain bike. Rear axel on the coaster break is stripped. I need to find cheap wheels to replace them.

I gave away a kona frame years ago due to a stuck seatpost. Didnt have a sawzall only a hand saw and yeah no bueno. Shoulda just stuck it somewhere until a rainy day. The galvanic corrosion is basically aluminum oxide which expands on the seatpost and aluminum oxide is a very hard substance being 9 on the mohs scale right below diamond at 10. Glad to see that you had success removing it.

You made a parade bike!! When you were building it up I was hating what seemed like an overdone, matchy-matchy color scheme but it really works as a whole bike. Nice!

I’m doing something like this to a 2004 trek 7100 frame. All I have though is a frame so I’m afraid I will be getting a little more than 150 in it. But a frame for 6 bucks is a good start.

Galvanic corrosion. Between alu and steel. That was not that bad example of it, I had much worse.. But never again 😀

That's corrosion is the result of moisture and two dissimilar metals. This is why riders should periodically remove, clean, and reapply grease to parts, especially seatposts and bb's. I have been enjoying watching all of these videos of "cheap" bike builds on YT. It's interesting to see everyone's different approach to meeting the requirements.
@DePuesshop
@DePuesshop 4 месяца назад
Thank you for the explanation! I knew it was from dissimilar metals but didn't realize that moisture was the catalyst. Either way, it's nessasary to keep those contact points lubed.

I think u did a great job except for one thing. By putting the rest Derailleurr in s ultrasonic cleaner with what im assuming to be degreaser the internal grease on pivot bolts and spring ceases to exist. Not sure if long term its good for the mechanism.
@DePuesshop
@DePuesshop 4 месяца назад
I did try to lube it after it was cleaned, but you're right, I may not have gotten inside the pivot area. I'm learning how to best use this new tool. I appreciate help and advice from all my viewers.

I’m not loving the rear brake caliper by the bottom bracket catching all the dirt. Do many bikes have this set up?
@DePuesshop
@DePuesshop 4 месяца назад
It was a trend for a few years in the 80s but quickly disappeared because of exactly what you said. Too much mud and dirt would collect on the brake.

Nice. Have you tried chemical paint strippers on bike frames, for a job like this? Would this be too messy/expensive, or just unnecessary? Thanks

What headset press are you using? Looks similar to one I’ve seen on Amazon, curious about your thoughts on it if so! Can’t justify the cost for the Park Tool ones
@DePuesshop
@DePuesshop 4 месяца назад
It's a cheap Amazon one, and it's very frustrating to use. I am always picking pieces of the tool off the floor when I use it. I don't recommend it. Sometimes, I prefer my homemade threaded rod tool.

@DePuesshop

I'm just getting used to it and learning. I know there are some tricks to get good results, but so far, I'm a fan of dropping parts in a basket and hitting the button.

I use Palmolive. It’s cheap and works well. Warm water is key. I also like to put parts into peanut butter jars, so you can just dump the dirty water from the jar without losing all your hot water. Fill a jar with evaporust and float it in the hot water. Amazing. Be careful with alkaline detergents and aluminum parts. From my experience dish detergent (Palmolive) is safe, effective, and cheap.

It's a sonic parts washer. I'm just learning to use it. It uses heat and vibration to shake the parts clean, with the help of some degreaser.
