Twenty-six and just bought my first sports car, a Miata. Videos like this were such a huge part of the inspiration! Your love for driving is infectious.
Congrats Dylan! Cars like yours keep us young. I finally had enough money to get my dream car (rally blue wrx) I remember playing with my older brother in gran turismo on Ps2. Driving is such a thrill.
I’ve been using my 1982 Fiat 124 Spider 2000 as my daily most days this summer. No matter how my day goes at work, after driving home with the top down on country roads in my red Italian sports car, everything is right with the world! 😎
I am a E85 Z4 owner who bought the 3.0i with only 44K miles on the clock and has she delivered better than I expeccted. Driving the car makes me feel like a kid again! Thank you for this video.
I bought a used 2012 Miata, six speed 30K miles. I bought it just so my wife and I could drive top down, in the Texas hill country twisty roads and we do, so much fun. Great Video!
@@mohitme1234 I've had a 2003 Z4 for the last 7 years. Things to look out for is the steering rack can get sticky in high temps on the early models. I believe they fixed it with the 2005-6 models. Also general BMW things so check the suspension bushings as they tend to wear out and make sure the windows and convertible top is still functioning, sometimes people leave them parked under trees for long periods of time and can get the drain holes clogged which can lead to problems. Other than that there's nothing else unique. Just general oil changes etc.
This is a comfort food type video that strikes that chord of classical romance and electric thrill. A slow waltz lost in her eyes while your heart beats faster by being near her. This is the kind of experience the automotive enthusiast desires, the sweep of the turn, the colors of the trees and the sound of the car pulling in air, snicking through the gears...smile after wonderful smile. Thank you gentlemen...Mississippi River Road, here I come!
Eight years ago I bought a perfect 2005 987 S with 6300 miles on it as a bulletproof daily driver. A former friend who thought he knew cars didn't think I should buy it since I'd never driven one, but your video of it introduced me to your channel and confirmed what I knew, and also confirmed what I was going to buy just before I signed on the line. Four years ago my girlfriend, who the same former friend who unfortunately said I should stay away from and who was probably right, went on the best road trip we ever took with that car on a four day loop along Hwy 550 to Telluride. That was indeed the best car, or type of car, imaginable for that drive. She, the friend and the Porsche are gone but Everyday Driver made the amazing memory possible. Thanks.
@@EverydayDrivertrying to catch up 2 ur latest ep (& test drive ep). Just love what u guys do. Ur the reason I r tried to become more contagious of THE disease.
It’s all about the experience. Driving becomes not only fun but satisfying. Sports convertibles are true mood twisters, they bring together nature and machines and fusion them in your body: eyes and hands. Feeling change your mindset. I just came up to your channel when recently bought a z3 after thoughts and doubts… but after tried it for 6 months I realized it was the perfect choice and this series of videos just confirm that. Keep sharing, you really transmit that behind doubts there are discovery and joy.
The “like” button feels insufficient to convey how much I like this. I could watch this video on repeat and just cheer like a sports fan and emphatically agree with everything said. Is there a double-like button? A triple-like button? …A quintuple like button? In 1 week I’m taking a trip like this. 4 drivers, 2 cars, 2 days, 986 and BRZ.
Several years ago, I bought a 1998 Boston Green BMW M Roadster for $5,999 as my daily driver. Once or twice a year on a 3 check month I throw a paycheck at it. It's been great fun & really reliable once deffered mainenance was handled. Found out she's 1 of 75 built in that color combo & they seem to be climbing in value!
There are no cheap cars ANYWHERE at the moment. Used Miatas are like 10 grand right now. Even beaters are like 4 grand with 200k miles, shits ridiculous.
You're going to like our Cheap Sports Car Showdown coming in a few weeks. 8 sports cars models, all of which have many examples available for $8,000 or less. Stay tuned!
@@TRexHeliPilot I’m gonna wait till the bubble bursts. Before the pandemic NB miatas with 60k miles or so were like 5-7k. Shits gotta come down at some point.
Just watched this and wanted to thank you guys for inspiring me to take a road trip this summer. I took the family on a 7 state 3500 mile 10 day trip that covered Tx ,Ok, NM, Co, Az , Nv and back to Tx. I did most of the close to 60 driving hours and enjoyed every bit of it! My family saw some great national parks, and met some great people along the way. We're already planning our next trip but this time we're leaving the family car behind and taking our 5.0 6 speed mustang instead. I can't wait!.
Just bought and modified an Audi TT 3.2 MK1. I can't wait to get out there and start really driving on these very same roads. Thank you for making such great videos. They keep me going while I am at work.
One of the best things about driving a convertible with the top down is that you can look at the scenery you're driving through without diverting your attention from the road as much. Also, checking your blind side is effortless.
Great road. The ride from Silverton to Durango is great too. I have ridden the full length on a Ducati motorcycle and was overwhelmed by both scenic grandeur and timor mortis. In a car you can't really appreciate the near vertical drops that are occasionally right at the no shoulder barrier free pavement's edge. Like cars, motorcycles tend to steer where you are looking, only more so. Being surrounded by that spectacular scenery felt like a trap. You are compelled to look, but if you look you die.
I am so amped for this road. I bought my first Porsche recently and have a 2000 mile road trip planned for this summer; a loop from Phoenix that covers all the best roads in the Rockies.
Love they way you present this show, pure class. Thanks. oh and for the budget, toyota mr2 sw20. not sure they are that cheap in the US but hear they are... for now
Fantastic road to drive. My wife and I travelled it in our Volkswagen Golf GTI, which was a perfect car for this road. If you love driving, you have to take this trip.
Just got back home (Phx) after driving the Million Dollar highway on last Thursday. We drove my wife’s Macan which is no cheap sports car but it was her first time putting the car through its paces to some extent due to the traffic and road construction. But nevertheless we really enjoy it; especially seeing the turning colors of the leaves and driving the Porsche.
Great video. Brings back memories. Used to drive my aircooled 911 from Durango to Silverton and back on Sunday mornings in the summer. One of the best roads ever… so beautiful but best to stop before taking in the views :)
Great video … thank you for “doing.” I use this video and some others on RU-vid (like super car devaluation tour - on “normal guy supercar” RU-vid channel) when planning by late September 20 23 Colorado Rd. trip. Other than a little bit of construction (we were stopped at the first tunnel just South of Ouray for close to an hour), and bunched up traffic after the construction stops (I spent a lot of time in the left lane ;-) we had a terrific 10 days … beautiful sun shine and pleasant temperatures. Over 10 days we drove Manitou Springs to Aspen (via independence pass) and then to Ouray (via Blue mesa reservoir), then to Telluride (via Durango) and then back to Aspen (via the canyons to Gateway, and Grand Mesa scenic byway), then back over independence pass … Keep up the great work !!
I bought 2003 slk 32 amg for around 7000$ and spent another 14000$ in 4 years to make it actually pleasant to drive. It's tough one, doesn't break much
I love ragtops, always have, and I've been on that stretch of road at least a dozen times, both ways. The vast majority of the time, it was on motorcycles. If you think convertibles are great on that road, try a two wheeler. Having said that, I made one trip, south bound, in a '94 T-Bird which made it a totally different experience and the one other time I drove it in a car, it was a 2004 Honda S2000. That's really the only way to go. I hit one section where I caught some rain. It was "so" nice to just raise the top, drive through, and drop it again on the other side. I don't regret any of the trips I made on my motorcycles, even those few times when it rained all the way through, but there's nothing like a convertible.
I got my 2005 SLK 350 (manual too) two years ago. I like it so much that I bought a 2010 911 manual convertible the next year. I bought the SLK for 5 k but I have since spent 12k to sort it out, including a well-known issue of broken rusted subframe recently. It’s a great fun car when it doesn’t have issues and I actually think it handles really well. I hope I have done most of the updates the car needs.
This series always throws me off because the cars are the opposite of your usual team color codes. Red Todd is in a blue car, while Blue Paul is in a red car -- that's switched up.
So true about the best roads having only vehicles not suited to them. I did CA 299 and CA 36 between redding and eureka, and wow. We saw like, 1 other sports car the whole day. It was 8 hours of driving.
@@PatrickLindemann22 Out of those two, I feel the BMW interior was a bit better (rarely do I think that when comparing BMW/MBs), but the SLK was a more enjoyable car overall.
I know exa tly what you guys are talking about. I have 3 cars, 2 of them are convertibles, a 981 Boxster S and a jaguar F type v6S. I dont feel the need to drive fast etc, i e joy the feel the cars provide and the smells sounds and scenery! !
When I planned a road trip from Wisconsin to New Mexico, I found the MIllion Dollar Highway by chance. I wanted to find a good curvy drive thru Colorado. Starting at Denver, to Frisco, Fairplay, past the Collegiate Peaks, Poncha Spings, Gunnison, Montrose, Ouray, Million Dollar Highway, Silverton, Durango, Cortez, with a stop at Mesa Verde, and on to Four Corners. Loved the whole drive.
Might I suggest the next car challenge? Cheap Manual compact sports car challenge: 2002-2005 is300, 2006-2007 mazdaspeed6, any old bmw3 series/Audi a4...
I ordered a new MINI Oxford two-door three-cylinder turbo six-speed manual in May and it's about to be built. It's the best new car for the money at $20,600 plus tax, license and dealer fees. I will have it on the Million Dollar Highway in 2022!
One story goes that a well know person, can't remember his name. After driving this road he said he wouldn't do it again for a million dollars. There are a million stories about how this road got its name.
For the SLK - the 230 supercharged engine is just as powerful despite less HP but makes the car lighter with a better feel to it. The 280 makes it very heavy up front.
It's hard to beat the memories of riding million dollar highway on my motorcycle in 2017. But as I age, and motorcycles are less and less a priority, perhaps it's time for me to get a convertible.
When does the $100K challenge start? I'm thinking an Evora GT and a 911 for Paul. Prices are crazy right now which throws things off, but I do seriously wonder where on the scale of $10K - $100K Sport Cars you reach the law of diminishing returns. Is a Supra twice as good as a ND2 Miata? Is a 911 twice as good as a Supra? Etc...
"There's nothing here the average person couldnt just go out and buy" its a bold claim saying the average person could just go out and spend $7,000 or so on a sports car
I disagree I spent 4K on a Z3 auto trans have drove it for three years with nothing more to than new tires ( the ones on it were 12 years old) an an oil change. Just replaced all the suspension and fixed an oil leak it is a blast to drive, nothing like driving a slow car fast.
@@alanbnaz Yeah I'm not doubting they are good fun for cheap, but where I am its not uncommon for people to have to save a coulple of years for a holiday, so even just being able dumping $4k on a second car and then tax and insurance is not something the average person can justify, let alone the $5-7.5k they claimed in this video The average person is a LOT more broke than they seem to think
We know that $7k is still a decent amount of money. And we're not suggesting it's throw-away cars or disposable cash. This entire discussion, and series, springs from the many people that write our Podcast saying they have no more than $8-10,000 and want to buy a car - then saying there's nothing fun or sporty available unless they spend twice that much or more. Our hope is that people looking for a car (likely their only car) that wish they could have a sports car - will buy one. Thanks for watching!
@@EverydayDriver thats fair enough, really enjoying the series by the way it was just the one line I took issue with! My brother has had a Z4 for many years and being a passenger in it has been a big part of what kicked off my love of cars its nice to see it get some recognition. Keep up the good content, really enjoy how you express what its like to really love all aspects of driving and not just playing top trumps with hp figures
Also keep in mind that vacation/holidays you’re paying for up front more often than not, whereas most people aren’t dropping $7k+ on a car without making payments.
Welcome to the world of motorcycles guys... cheap convertible, with fabulous handling, and superlative power to weight ratio.. and that is on the non-sport bikes..
