Cool! One day, I got noise instead of audio from my analog scanner while trying to listen to Police frequencies around my neighborhood. I later found out they changed into trunking and then I got this Uniden Bearcat trunking scanner only to find out that it only received analog trunking. I'm looking forward to watching your tutoring series and learn how to decode digital trunking. I happen to have two sdr receivers: an SDRplay RSP2 and an Airspy HF+ Discovery (recently acquired and not yet fully tested).

Phil - Don't be intimidated. If I can do it, trust me, anyone can! Look at it like a bunch of small easy steps all strung together to make a big project. It's worth it though. My dad was a Ham and an EE and unfortunately, I never understood has passion for radio technology until after he was gone. Now, I'm obsessed with it. Wish he could have experienced SDR! Hello Steve, great vids, one question please, does the software Unitracker tell the second RTLSDR (the scan not the fixed) where to jump to for the channels?, cause both the Fixed and scan are set to the same Audio cable....its just confusing a bit for my slow brain, whats telling the other RTLSDR (scan) to jump ? cheers

Very nice tutorial. I have a question though. Is there a way to control the scanner once you're locked in? I.e., can I hold on a talkgroup? Is there another program that acts like a virtual controller to tag the TGIDs with their names? I like the setup but as an open searching scanner...you'd hear everything on the system including the trash pickup guys. I'd imagine in Charlotte that'd be quite annoying. I'm currently using using a Unidentifiable 396xt as my portable and a new 352 as my home unit. I joke to use Freescan for programming logging and Procom96 for deep logging. I'm monitoring in the Triad area around Greensboro, Thomasville and High Point mostly. Thanks!

Now what I need to come up with is a simple program that will allow this to work on a Raspberry Pi. One single frequency and give me an active low or high output on the IO pins when either a single privat NAC code or an all call NAC CODE is received. Basically a control for a simple P25 repeater. The repeater can pass the data transparently to the receivers, just need to protect repeater from analogue ker-chunkers.

Almost twenty years now since the digital start to invade radios. I sold everything when I couldn’t listen much any more. I had software with black box, optoelectronics high tech frequency counter that auto synchronized my Acom high tech scanner end few other things. I gave up and been told that is impossible to get digital listening scanners at the time. Some told me that each communication company had their own software to decode it. It was the good old time when we could listen police, fire station, ambulance, companies, FRS, wireless home phones, cell phones and few more. I miss all that.

@@n8mail76 suret but 20 years ago, we could not get the digital communication. Scanners were not out yet. I don’t believe that you could have listen Montreal police radio when they switch from analogue to digital in the 2000’. I don’t have this hobby anymore, so I’m not going to start buying again.

@Steve's 5 C's Hello! I am totally new to this and my local public services has also switched to digital. I don't have $100+ to throw around just to listen to the pd, fmd, and ems. I came across this video! I see in the description other videos. Are they assigned as step by step videos? Also, is there a way I can get this to work in my vehicle? Perhaps just bring my whole laptop into the car LOL.?

I have been looking at scanners, but like you said Steve, they are crazy priced($450-500)....does this software & SDR work on P25 2 systems? Do they make any of this software for Android(tablets) or does it need to be on windows? Thanks for doing these videos. I followed your instructions to the "T" and everything worked. I still can't get SDR# to work with DSD+ but the Unitrunker works great. The only thing is there has to be a way to save the fixed control frequencies that are around me in Unitrunker somehow.

glad it worked. i really have to go back through this process and recreate the videos. seems like people are having trouble as things change. in a perfect world, i would do it right away, but my world is far from perfect.

Steve's 5 C's Yes I agree with you on having to redo them as Linux is constantly changing and these developers are constantly updating stuff. I tried the Linux after doing the prerequisites from your raspberry pi video and after I installed ant i got the loop. I swapped the hard drive and am loading 7 on that one now. I tried 8.1 and 10 with unitrunker and had few problems but I can't get dsd+ to work with sdr#. It should use the same principles but it's driving me nuts! I talked before about Fusion DMR and it looks like dsd+ will decode Yaesu System Fusion packets. People are buying expensive radios to listen to this type of digital modulation. I like $25 SDR setups.

Awesome video series Steve! I watched and bookmarked all 5. I just dropped over $250 for a Uniden BCD325P2 scanner that I am live feeding to Radio Reference. But not disappointed tho because with your videos when I get SDR running on my PC I can use it to live feed RR and free up the new portable I bought. Very interested in the Raspberry Pi set up too! Hello, I live in brown county Wisconsin. I checked radio references for my county control channel and noticed that public safety operates in the 770. Band. However, I noticed that they are in the 800mhz bands. Not sure how that is possible?

you can use ether unitrunker 2 by its self or sdr trunk no need for dsd+ anymore they can decode voice on their own sdr trunk is the best in my opinion tho

Hi Steve: Great videos. I have 2 RTL2832U dongles, Unitrunker Version 1.0.3.2.7, Virtual Cable, Windows 10 on a Core I7 PC. I have been able to get the first dongle to receive the control channel for a local Motorola Type II system and everything seems to be working great. However, I cannot get the second dongle to open no matter what I do. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks, John

I currently have one SDR and didn't know I needed 2 for Unitrunking so thanks for the clarity but I'm a little confused on the connections to the laptop. Were you using an external USB on your laptop?

Yes, not mandatory, but definitetly helps because the USB ports on my LT are so close together.

I have the same scanner as you show here, that old scanner can still be used, as I have modified it with a discriminator output, and used it for decoding the AIS signal on the PC running Shipplotter.

Thank you for the video. What do you mean about encrypted transmittion? I knew that trunk system meaning that both operators change continually frequency and that is why is difficult to hear the police or other security services. It is that what you call encrypted?

Digital transmissions need to be encoded to translate the digital message into words we can understand. If digital is unencrypted, it can be decoded and understood. If it is encrypted, even DSD+ won't help.

Trunking systems work somewhat like mobile phone tower systems,they can hop frequencies during any conversation to free up room for others .

Encoding is a scheme for various means of transmitting a signal to improve it's transmission and reception, (i.e. enhance bandwidth). Encryption (validate in webster for a good definition) is a method of hiding a message for privacy or secrecy. According to FCC rules you may decode and listen to an encoded traffic on the airwaves (minus cell and cordless phone frequencies). You may not legaly un-encrypt an encrypted transmission. The FCC rules are posted on their web-page, read the legalese to get a better understanding.

The main problem isn't money. To encrypt transmissions requires key management which is itself a challenge. For example, neighboring municipalities would need the same key to assist with mutual aid. (A separate unencrypted mutual aid channel is really unhelpful as all the important traffic is taking place on the normal encrypted channel.) But once enough people know a "secret" it ceases to be a secret and you are back to smart guys like Steve adding an AES-256 decryption app to the mix and typing in the key. The good-practice of changing a key every 3 months becomes a nightmare.

2 dongles extends your bandwidth, but if you have it covered, don't spend the money if you don't have to.

they are hooked to a 1 to 4 external USB port because my USB ports were too close to each other on my laptop.

My area (Onondaga County, NY) is listed as P25 Phase II but with one RTL-SDR (same as in the video) I can listen to our 5 county consortium. New York State Police are listed as Phase I but I never hear them on 700MHz but I hear Sheriff's Deputies, City Police and Municipal police + EMS/Fire on 450MHz and 150MHz. I bought two just in case, am I missing out on something with only one SDR? I'm using SDRF, DSD+, etc.

No. You need to add a LiPo battery to your gum and foil, then it is possible.

This system can not decrypt any encrypted p25 or sky link.it can only pick up none encrypted phase 1 or 2 p25 sytems or any none encrypted radio waves.no has ever have been documented on dycrypting any encrypted didtil systems.

It will work with one sdr but on a larger system you will need at least two sdr's to cover the systems bandwidth, With just one you will be missing calls on a larger system.
