Great mod! One tip, if you place the tires, so the outer one has the valve stem on the outside, and the inner tire is flipped so it valve stem is on the inside..next to the board, you won't have to remove the axle and tires if you need to add air..

awesome idea i may have to try that on mine. I have been wanting to change over to the harbor freight tires for a while now. Currently use bike tires so pretty narrow. I am seldom in just sand but one of our favorite launch points is a mix of river sand, dirt and clay. Nasty mix that acts like sand going over it but also gunks up on the wheels coming out of it. We used a diy version of landing gear but i can already see a way of modifying it so we could add extra wheels when we need to.

I bet that is really bad when it is wet!

@@KayakhacksFishing Oh it is lol. Its on a river that has a hydro electric dam that can raise the river about 9 feet so after they have turned off a lot of the bank is soaked. But even as nasty as this bank is we use it because the other choice is a extra mile down river and while it has a concrete slope it looks and feels like some one rode a bike through all of it while wet. Flat out broke 2 carts using it and its a pay launch. Where as the dirt one is a private access from a nice land owner we ran across.

I am so grateful to the two homeowners who let me launch into the ICW from their property. It opens up unpressured water.

@@KayakhacksFishing This guy is really cool, We found be because one day wading we were forced out of the river due to rising water and could not get back to our entry point. Here was this nice dirt road leading up and way from the river about 2 miles from our car ( the bank is usually so covered with brush that its hard to get out and up on open land). So we went up it and the home owner seen us and here he comes in this 4wd super cart looking thing and i am thinking man we are in trouble for trespassing or something. Nope when he got to us he had cold water , gatoraid and drove us to his house where he insisted we stay for a while hydrate and cool off in the ac. he then drove us the couple of miles to our car. Before we left he told us come to his place anytime to access the river. He is one of the very few people with a house and easy access to the river in a few miles. SO he keeps a outside refrigerator full of bottled water and gatoraid and a sign at the top of the dirt road pointing out the fridge. Clearly we are not the only ones that he has basically rescued. Its rare but when you run across people like that it restores faith in humanity.

Concur with Adam Fink's suggestion of foam. Lowe's sells a product called Slime for fillibg/repairing leaking tires that would work well, with no need to worry about dismantleing the rig to air-up a low tire. It (Slime) can be found at Lowe's in the dept with the lawnmower accessories. Maybe the double-tire idea would be beneficial on the cart you store the kayak on, for when you roll it across the yard. Just a thought ;)
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 5 лет назад
Good point on the slime. I just wonder how far I would have to roll it to get the slime distributed. Doesnt it have to coat everything once you squirt it in?
@retnav92
@retnav92 5 лет назад
@@KayakhacksFishing: I believe it does have to coat all of the inside, but have never used it. Make a trip to Lowe's and take a gander at the instructions before buying just to be sure.

To keep weight down, use wheels from a used golf bag pull cart. I picked up a donor at my local Salvation Army store.

That is certainly the way to do things if you don't have, or want to spend money on the BooneDox landing gear.
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 5 лет назад
Yep. I have the boonedox on the back of my heavy kayak and use the cart for the front. I was concerned about all the weight deforming the shell if I put the boonedox at the balance point.

Would a old lawn tractor tire worked better since it is much wider? I’m just curious
@KayakhacksFishing

Sure. I think any tire that will not sink in the damp grass, soft mud or sand will work great.

Actually you might be on to something here! You could always add 3 or even 4 wheels if necessary. It might look a bit strange, but anything but spending $80 (or that outrageous fortune for the landing gear set up) is better than trying to cross sand only to find out the wheels dig in deeper with every step! I wish I could try this out too, but its winter here now and much too cold to go fishing or anything else outside for that matter. Us anglers call it "maintenance season" around here!

Modify your board so just the contact is smaller. Just a jigsaw is needed. Keep the valve stem accessible.
@dwied10

You could also make a spacer out of 1/2 inch PVC to fit on the axle between the tire and the board.

@NiteWolfeFishing
@NiteWolfeFishing 5 лет назад
Actually the foam idea has been debunked. What happens is over time the spray foam breaks down from all the bumps and rocks that push in on the tire and spray foam wont rebound so you end up with nasty broken up foam and a flat tire.
