Another good tip is if you have pets make sure that you have a shelf stable ingredients on hand for easy to make dog food. There are recipes for simple balanced easy to prepare home made food. My dog has a liver shunt so now can only have home made food. I keep rice, oatmeal, pumpkin puree, dehydrated vegetables, lentils, garbanzo beans and sardines on hand. Most dogs can have other meat proteins, but due to his health issues his system turns most meat proteins to toxins and he has seizures. My dog is small so I can easily make 2 weeks of food at a time in my pressure cooker and freeze daily portions. I am going to try dehydrating some as well in case of a emergency.

When our dog had an upset stomach, our Vet recommended that we boil equal parts of ground beef and rice (I used Minute rice) together until the beef was cooked through, drain the liquid, and then cool and serve. He LOVED it, and it cured his upset stomach. Rice and ground beef worked wonders.

There’s supposed to be shortages for corn due to planting and weather issues. In addition to items like cornmeal or corn starch, if you enjoy popcorn you might want to get it now. You can vacuum seal these items to help keep them fresh. Popcorn might also be a budget friendly and comforting treat as well.

Strong odors in jar lids can be removed by putting bleach or Ododban in them, letting them sit and them washing thoroughly. Get more GRAINS and Seed/grains: quinoa, buckwheat, milletand others are gluten-free; barley and bulgar are wheat. Lentils are also cheap, nutrient dense, work good with rice (seasoning is everything) and store great. FYI, you can brush your teeth with Baking Soda (forget about storing tooth paste). Non Fat Powdered Milk stores good for a long time using a Food Saver Vacuum Sealer. I love recycling my Classico bottles, mason jars can get expensive, I just buy the lids now. I've recently learned how to make flat breads, pretty easy. Corn tortillas are simplest, corn masa/flour & water. Excellent skill to have if you have the ability to heat a frying pan. Very nice bread substitute or you can even make corn chips for snacking.😉

In 2018, something told me to put extra away. I have a small budget. My grocery budget was $10 a week to eat. I carefully portion out my food to keep what I eat at less than $1 a day. LaModerna pasta is 48 cents a package these days. It does not contain eggs so it lasts a long time. It is on smaller pieces so it cooks faster. I have different sauce and flavoring options for my pasta. I worked on repackaging systems. They have new shelf stable meat at Walmart. I got some to try and it was pretty good. It is in pouches from Hereford.

Thank you for your informative vids, AG!!! The two best things I learned to do: 1) transfer dry food to mylar bags and seal with an oxygen absorber inside. These bags go into food grade buckets and stacked. 2) pressure canning was the "lockdown" skill I learned. I can't believe it took me so long to learn such a valuable skill! I now have *fast food* on my shelves at all time and I know exactly what it is it. I primarily can single items like chicken, broth, potatoes, greens, etc. But, making soup bases (that you can add a starch to later) are awesome.

If you store dry beans for too long in the original plastic bag, they can get so hard they will not soften no matter how long you cook them. If this happens to you, use a grain mill on the coarsest setting to break the beans into pieces and then grind them a second or third time to make a coarse meal. Add this bean meal to other ingredients to make homemade soup, savory quick bread, Ezekiel bread or cornbread. When making bread with bean meal as an ingredient, you may want to let the batter rest for a few minutes so the bean meal can absorb enough water so it will soften during cooking.

I make easy fruit cobbler. Heat oven to 375 and place 3/4 stick of butter in 9x9 dish (or similar size casserole dish). Place dish in oven to melt butter. Mix together 1 cup self-rising flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk and a few drops of vanilla or lemon extract. Pour batter into dish with hot butter and spoon fruit on top (do not stir). Bake 35-45 minutes until top is well browned. It works with any canned fruit or pie filling. The recipe doesn’t use any eggs which is helpful if eggs are scarce. It’s one of the best desserts I ever had too.

I bought two small drums yesterday for noodles and rice. I think they're about twenty gallon size. They have a metal band that opens on top. I may get another one for breakfast cereals. The lady said they had medicine originally, and that there was a liner bag that just lifted out and then they were rinsed out. So nothing else has been in them with funny smells. I didn't know that they made drums like these or where to get any. They're just like the blue 55 gallon plastic barrels, same material, but about one third the size. I've got a bunch of buckets of stuff, need to go through it. I can use some of the empty buckets in the new greenhouse. Having just a few barrels is better than so many buckets, for me. It will give me more room in here.
@Bloodhoundjed1

I really wished I could find a bunch of the square buckets. They are smaller than the 5 gallon buckets, but I think they would work better for me. I have a small room and the 5 gallon buckets are bulky and in the way. I've got to find another way to organize the small room and be able to get as much as possible in it.
@davidpotter9462
@davidpotter9462 Год назад
Oh I had just enough noodles to completely fill one of the drums. I'm going to put instant milk in the other one. I think I will get two more. These little barrels are just the right size. They hold about three and a half buckets full, each. It might depend on how tight packed the stuff is as to weight. I realized what a bargain they are. I could put six of these in my Ranger pickup, I think. That would be a good bug out supply, wouldn't it? They're just ideal for storage. Twenty bucks apiece. They have two nice handles, heavy made. I can use a few empty buckets in the greenhouse for growing herbs, peppermint, etc. With four small drums and one big one, I can get my dry goods all put up in the dry. A barrel full of corn flakes and rice crispies might be a good idea. The lady that I'm buying the drums from is getting curious. I told her I was making a solar hot water heater system out of one of them, so I think she was curious what I was making this time. I said, oh, well, I'm just putting noodles and rice in them for winter. Well, they'll look a lot better than a snow ball. She doesn't think I'm quite as weird now. She said, Oh a lot of people do that. I think she was kind of disappointed that I didn't have a new invention that used barrels. 🤣

I think that having basic utilities independence would be a fantastic thing so we can still have energy to keep our freezers running, our clean water coming from our faucets and showers, some sort of internet (maybe starlink?) and basic sanitation (this is a bit easier if regulations allow you to have a septic tank, even if you only use it as a backup, but I think it's not allowed to have them in many areas, so you might have to do it without letting authorities know, same with water pumps, I hear some places won't even let you collect rain water, which is just bonkers, they won't even let you keep that water just so you can water your garden with it, meaning the water is going to the same place, but you're actually saving resources by not using city water). I hear there's countries already considering a tax on solar panels to make up for lost revenue they'd have from selling you fuel and energy (as if those solar panels didn't already have tax on them).

Valley of the Sun, Arizona. Most (possibly all) of the municipalities, as well as the county, used to actively discourage rainwater collection and use. This Spring--for the first time--Phoenix Public Library system offered workshops to help people get started, with a significant focus on safety of water storage. The sessions were filled IMMEDIATELY! Hope they repeat them next year, but begin in January. That may or may not be the best time to begin collecting rainwater (although it traditionally is a month with rain), but it is an excellent time to begin setting up a system so it is ready for use before the heat arrives! ...Teale 🏜️

I don't know if this is helpful to anybody, but if you guys struggle to get groceries ,cuz a lot of us have really tight tight budgets ,and have to use food pantries. This is another way you can also build up your prepper pantry as as well. You have the pantry that you use and your prepper pantry and if you're struggling and you actually have to go to a food pantry this is a way to build up both your pantry that use everyday and your prepper pantry. There are a lot of pantries that give out meat fish lots of fruits and vegetables quick oats white rice beans a whole bunch of different things depending on what state you're in school so it's depending on what they give and if you have children that are in diapers a lot of the Pantry's to give diapers so you can have that as well and some also give baby wipes and sanitary napkins for older females for that time of the month also some give adult underwear it depends on where you go and what resources are available to you and you could always ask like is there a place where I can get adult diapers or feminine pads or baby diapers and baby wipes there's always going to be someone there to help you and this is also a way for you to use what you need right now and set some off to the side as well hopefully this helps somebody and pantries give a lot of shelf-stable food you'll be able to stock up on those things as well

I am considering on making some feminine pads, as the ones I normally buy, are starting to irritate my skin. So, I am thinking because of the cotton shortage, they may be introducing something else to it to make them.

I've found if I put a little bit of baking soda on the pickle lid or whatever lid where I'm reusing the jar and let it sit for a while. Much better on catching odor. Once I forgot and the pancake mix I put in smelled like green olives..😅😅

Hungry Jack makes a carton of plain hashbrowns with no oils so they're great for storing, if repackaged in air tight containers. Just watch that whatever you buy there are no added oils bc they will go rancid. I always have potato flakes on hand along with canned potatoes.

When they gave extra food stamps each time i got stamps i got the basic 7, beans white rice potato flakes pasta oats flour n salt. Then id get groceries n 6 extra cans n put the 6 in seperzte boxes to b easily found by intruders looking for food so they would think they got it all. Then id eat off my 2 years dehydrated food carefully hidden. I can make flour from acorns my oak produces n dandelion green salads n cat tails. Theres an apple tree that hangs over fence by mail boxes n mt walnut tree produces walnuts to eat bake or sell. When i get groceries i also get 30 organic oranges 1 a day is all u need n a jar of TANG to store. Your brain needs equivalent of 2 eggs dsily so i get 30 eggs n 30 waffles waffles contain 1 egg. I fry eff n put on waffle. That'll do. My naybors used their extra stamps for soda pop pizza n hungry man dinners i tried to teach them to cook n frugality but got nowhere. 😊i swap malnuts w a naybors eggs. I burn all trash n woodburner all garbage is composted. All plastic foes to Walmart to recycle n all metal usually cans rinsed n that n alum cans go to junk yard. Thus no garbage bill good for me n environment.i get 1 sunday newspaper. Remove all coupons n swap the funnies i wrap gifts in n tie w string after reading paper i wrap round broomstick n secure w metal coathanger that gives me 52 free firelogs for woodburner n ashes r composted. ⁰when coathanger is brittle it goes n junk.

I LOVE your ideas, and the way you make sure you get your protein and Vitamin C! And you make use of everything available!! I have made newspaper logs. They work great. Even better if you soak in water, then tie with string, and dry in the sun. Better fire, and burn longer! And your sneaky way to keep your food hidden is great...I'm kind of doing the same thing.

Acid food can eat through cans also tomato products can get a metallic flavor from the can. I had a can of tomato soup that got shuffled into a corner of my shelf. It eventually ate through the can and made a big mess.
