Corrugated cardboard is better, it will break down but that's the point, you need to get some worm action going on! The cardboard is only a weed barrier till the bed is established

I think this is a great idea for a budget garden your actually not getting the best out of your time or your money. The wood on these garden beds would work for about 1-4 harvesting seasons depending on the weather until they start to decompose. If you want a garden bed that will last make yours out of brick, stone, even concrete works! Stone doesn’t decompose so it a lot less work. We even got our bricks off of Facebook marketplace for only 65$ and we haven’t had to mess with the structure since! This makes a for a lot less work and money waste. So really doing things the hard way pats off in the end! (Still a great idea though I in no way mean this hatefully)

I dunno about those blocks, but I've bought about 50 4x8x16 cinder blocks in the past month and they were just under $2 a piece. The 8x8x16 cinder blocks are just over $2. 2x4x8 wooder boards are a little over $3 a piece. I've bought bunch of those lately too. Most of those items have gone into making flowerbeds and a fire pit. I can't imagine those blocks costing much more than standard cinder blocks. Maybe a couple of extra $ each. Those are Lowes prices. I'm in Florida, but up in the panhandle. The closest Home Depot is about 35 miles away. Lowes is less than 10 miles.

If your raised bed is going to be 12in tall or more, then you don't need to worry about weeds coming up from bellow. Grass and other weeds aren't going to grow a foot without sunlight. What you do want to do is use the cardboard around the outer edge of the bed to be barrier against weeds growing up the sides of the bed. I'd personally use a thicker wood than fencing so they would last longer, but that would of course, increase the price.
@perkyplantparent

Thanks for commenting! Yes, I would prefer thicker cedar boards but that would definitely increase the cost by a bunch! my goal was to show people that it doesn't take a lot to get started. thanks for watching 😊

My dad had a couple yards of rocky sand dumped in the yard for him to use in the driveway to fill some holes. My dad never did that and years later that mound of rocky sand needs to be mowed. It was probably 3feet tall at the peak and somehow weeds and grass grew through it.
@KakeemDude4
@KakeemDude4 Год назад
@@authorityfigure1630 If I had to hazard a guess, I would imagine that there were weed seeds that landed on top of the mound and started to grow from the surface, and not from below the mound. The same thing happens to any mulch barrier that isn't regularly maintained. They are called weeds because they can make anywhere a home, and the wind blows their seeds all over the place.
