This is just a quick video to show a cheap lighting setup I've been using for both portraits and video work.
The lights are the Neewer 176 LED lights which can be either battery powered or plugged into the mains. They're highly portable, take minutes to setup and when used with a diffuser umbrella produce a nice soft light, perfect for portraits and video interviews.
Whilst they may not be favoured by professionals, I was looking for a good, simple, setup that wasn't gonna cost me a fortune so these seemed to fit the bill.
I hope this video is of use to people that are in the same position I was, and would love to hear your thoughts if you're using a similar setup.
This video and all example footage / photos were shot on the Sony A5600 with Sigma 30mm 1.4 Lens.

Your videos are really inspiring! It shows that you don't need to spend 10k on equipment to produce exellent results. Of course, one needs the skills & knowledge. Your videos make me feel way more confident in my Canon M50, Sigma lens and Neewer LED setup. But I have to learn so much, especially when it comes to editing.

Thanks for the info! I've currently got two of these lights and looking to use them for my RU-vid videos in a more cinematic way. I want to have have cinematic soft lighting in my sit down videos. So I'm looking at trialing this as an option and if it doesn't work, then I'll buy the Neewer 660 as my key light. My main concern was that the 176s wouldn't be bright enough as a key light. So from the footage you shot in both of those mini documentaries and your talking head of this video, did you just use one 176 as a key light with the umbrella and one as a fill or rim light? Were they the only lights? Did you have to bump up your ISO and shoot with your aperture wide open? Cheers!

Lin Nyunt Hey Lin, thanks for watching. To answer your question, yes these were the only two lights I used. 200 ISO and with the Sigma primes I can shoot at pretty big apertures - usually 1.4 to 2 which obviously helps let a lot of light in. If I were ever to upgrade to a ‘proper’ light I think I’d go for the Godox SL60 - seems pretty good and reasonably priced. Hope that helps!

These are very good lights. I’m off to the States shortly and needed a compact lighting system. I’ll try pairing mine with an enclosed umbrella to minimise light spill. Thanks for your video. It was very helpful.

David Simon Thank you 🙏. I generally use a pretty wide aperture (1.4) - put the ISO as low as I can go - then dial in the exposure until it looks right! 😎

I Appreciate the budget setup. Been looking for a cheap key light unfortunately that neewer is not available on my country. Have you tried the yongnuo yn300 air 2? They look promising and cheap too

Got my first ever interview job in a couple of weeks so I'm just about to order this full setup! The quality of the light looks really nice, was there a reason that you went with the umbrella over a softbox?

Rhys Obasi great stuff! Will keep my peeled for your vid. Tbh, I went with the brolly cause it was cheap, light, and folds up nicely into the bag I got with the lightstands. I’ve recently been watching some comparison vids and the results are very close to using a softbox however the umbrella will ‘spill’ a bit more light than a softbox. Looking on Amazon I think a foldable softbox isn’t that expensive so I’d say maybe check out some comparisons vids and make up your mind from there. If you do buy anything feel free to use my amazon links to help a brother out! (No pressure tho haha!) I’ll try and find you that comparison vid - 2 ticks...

Snapped By Alex M You’re welcome! I’m glad you said that about the softbox - I’d been looking at that too but maybe now I’ll stick with the diffuser umbrella! I think my next lighting purchase may be the Godox/Neewer SL60 - seems to be a well reviewed, cheaper alternative to the Aputure 120d!

@@StuartRodwell if you can get the softbox on to the light, it's pretty good. The issue is, it was made for the older 160 version which is chunkier. The Godox looks amazing, but for now, the 176 combo is perfect as it's battery powered and portable for indoor sets 👌

Ah man - bummer! Although just had a look and the £45 does include a battery and charger, the light on its own is £30. Still a pretty steep increase though! :(
