Asking Simon
- Who are you?
I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats.
- Who is Champ?
Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza.
- What camera equipment do you use?
I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights.
- What are your vehicles?
I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years.
Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice.
From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran.
- What are your plans with the boat?
I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come!
- How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos?
To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: freecampsites...., www.campendium..., www.atlasobscur..., www.couchsurfi...
- How do you afford your lifestyle?
I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy.
I make my income almost entirely by creating content for RU-vid, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects.
- How does your dog fit into this lifestyle?
It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities.
- How do you make it work as a digital nomad?
My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

It is great to have that side project where you can make progress that is more tangible to break up work on the big boat. Sometime you just need something where you can feel a completion and not just look around and see 10 other things waiting.

...Also fix that zipper on the mainsail cover before it rots in two! It's been bugging me for awhile lol. Nice hatch repair! If you haven't yet finding an old sewing machine and learning how to use it on a boat will save you big! Cushions, sun covers, drapes, sail repairs all are good practice and honestly one of my favorite parts of Boatworks is sewing.

When I first started following your channel, you were going all kinds of places and filming beautiful, interesting things and people. I didn't have to wait too long for videos from you either-4 days being a long time. I love your boat project, have supported you with views and likes on every one. But, I catch myself going back to your older videos. Please don't bash me, but I am missing the old Finding Simon channel that filmed a lot and kept me interested. I'm gonna hang with your channel, though. I'm not a fair weather friend or anything.

I have had many boats and the one thing I can say about working on them is that a boat is never "done".

Yes, would be nice to get the small boat complete. I'm waiting on the maiden launch of Old Dog though. All the glory of sweat and tears, such an accomplishment. Still loving this adventure of yours. 😊👍

Roller reefing is fantastic. The ability to roll out a sail in seconds is a serious safety item, to get you off a lee shore, or unstuck off a sandbar or when run aground. Great kit to have :-)

TIP: When "bedding" something like your hatch with bedding compound, apply the compound pretty thick, then only tighten the screws until a little squeezes out evenly all around. Then, let the compound cure for a day or two before giving the screws a final light tightening. This will give you a custom molded "gasket" of bedding compound that will help discourage future leaks. (If you tighten it down with the compound wet it will mostly squeeze out).

Not sure I would want the rudder's fitting and the fitting for the main sheet bolted together to be honest. Difficult to say, not seeing it close up but I would stack them, and make damned sure there was something non-compressable between the 2 sides of glass. Then the rudder fitting can be through-bolted and the sheet fitting screwed into the glass and substrate safely. Like I say, difficult to offer suggestions when I am not looking at it properly. Keep safe, bruv, and keep keeping on.

I'd be so tempted to enjoy the Sea Lark, summer gunkholing around the islands. Use the cat as a "Mother Ship" and go back to it, with renewed enthusiasm, in the Fall.

Elongate the holes by adding a hole along side the existing ones and that will help u with aligning the bolts

Not sure why you took the hanks off the jib. It should have furled fine with those still on, and I am unconvinced about the sail shape without them. The sheet (line) attached to the mainsail is called the main sheet, oddly enough. :-0

I know you're in the PNW but a cover or sun protection patch is mandatory if you're going to keep a sail on a roller furler.

Does a Cal 20 really need roller furling? That furler you put on is a known piece of shit plus your gonna lose a little performance without those hanks.
