Roof top tent rack mods and hacks! This 4x4 camping beast is almost ready for the woods! Today we are going to push our creativity and add some cheap modifications to our roof top tent bed rack! This video is basically a second episode to the bed rack build. In the first episode we built the rack from scratch and now we need to finish it. I needed to install a deep cycle battery and I wanted to figure out a way to do it without an isolator. Lots of 12 volt tech on the agenda today and I can't wait to get started!

Nate, use a voltage sensitive relay for charging your auxiliary batteries. It’s easily installed. BEP, Blue Sea Systems, etc. All marine applications. No real voltage loss, and they have a switch (relay) to prevent the aux battery from cannibalising your starting battery
@amorton94
@amorton94 4 года назад
Are you saying that there is something wrong with his current setup?
@speedandmarine9066
@speedandmarine9066 4 года назад
@@amorton94 No that it's wrong, but VSR's (voltage sensitive relay) is a better way to charge an aux battery. They work automatically once the alternator is charging AND the main batteries are at a high enough state of charge for system voltage to be around 13.5 (depends on specific relay) and they are also rated for 75-150 amps rather than 30ish for a typical Bosch style relay.

Speed and Marine I was concerned with the potential of 140A going through a little relay. I’ve used an old style ‘ford’ starter solenoid to do what he’s doing, but the oil pressure trigger with the correct relay is a better idea. The VSR is even better, as well as 150A feed wire.

Definitely needs an ACR to manage the charge control or one puts the alternator and batteries at risk for a shorter lifespan.

Heads up a deep cycle battery has different charging profiles than a regular battery. Your alternator is setup to charge standard batteries. To change a deep cycle battery in your truck you should technically be using a DC to DC converter. Ctek makes em, probably a bunch of others as well. Using a relay or an isolator will work but will probably shorten the life of the battery. Great job on the video, I'm thinking of using some of the design features from this rack and some features of the Landover rack to build something for my ram. Just have to make the entire rack quick release for when I have to pull the gooseneck.
@johnpike9612
@johnpike9612 4 года назад
Cool idea on the battery "isolator". Not truly an isolator though as that relay may trigger with only 4 or 5 volts and allow your truck to try starting from the auxiliary battery and subsequently melting that small wire. Possibly even starting a fire or ruining the battery when it shorts out. A true battery isolator will only allow electric travel in one direction, that is how it prevents the drainage of other connected batteries. For just a few $ more you couldve gotten a true isolator and saved your self some work and gained a greater piece of mind.

@Irishcream216

yeah, what you need is a normally closed plunger switch that opens the circuit when depressed. (Alarm panel Tamper switch or plunger door contact will work well) pass that through a double pole single throw relay and run power through the other side of the relay. break the hot leg of the light power and the grounds are all common. when the switch is depressed, it will flip the relay and trigger the power shunt. when it's open, the relay will send power to the light.

It’s probably been said already but you can get a “split charge relay kit” which will do exactly what you’re trying to achieve. They are used in camper van/ overland builds for all the auxiliary electrics. They are also much heavier duty for amperage draw and voltage drop than the relay and gauge of wire you are using.
@ZacCostilla
@ZacCostilla 4 года назад
The weird thing about DC is the further the distance, the bigger the gauge wire required to avoid voltage drop over distance. www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html?material=copper&wiresize=0.4066&voltage=13.2&phase=dc&noofconductor=1&distance=10&distanceunit=feet&amperes=300&x=54&y=27

Just FYI, you can connect the wiring in the a-pillar of the truck that go to the bed light to the reverse wires which will turn the bed light on with the reverse lights, or the reverse lights on with the bed light switch. This allows you to use the extra reverse lights to light up the back of the truck while connecting a trailer or whatever without having the truck in reverse. I did the same with my 07 RAM, has worked for years without an issue.

We've been using what's called a "split charge system" here in the UK for years. Exactly what you were talking about 4mins in. Two ways to do it, first is using the alternator charging indicator line to trigger the relay the other is a voltage detection cct that opens the relay to charge the second battery after the primary has taken a bulk charge, this will also shut off if the voltage drops due to long draw (eg driving at night with all lights on and wipers and heater etc when the primary battery needs all the current from the alternator). Also good for secondary batteries that power a winch. A solenoid type contact rather than a small relay is generally used.
@jam79car
@jam79car 4 года назад
Hi Nate, I wanted to take a second to address the issues with running a relay for battery charging. Specifically voltages. The idea you have is great but unfortunately these batteries aren't matched. The alternator will overcharge a battery with less capacity and under charge the other connected cells. Being a plumber this equates to trying to fill different capacity reservoirs. Additional once the key is turned to start the vehicle, the battery will end up being drawn from during starting because there is nothing preventing the backflow of current. The rule of using same batteries in a diesel would apply here. A battery isolator would work in this application but I would recommend a smart dc-dc charger. This small thing will allow smart charging of your battery and prevent backflow. Keep the current relay setup and add the charger inline. This will pay dividends down the road later when you get much more life from your batteries. Also I'm curious why you didn't choose a simple relay controller like aux beam or rough country has? Aux beam controller is $150 and has a backlit pad and the universal mlc-6 rough country controller is only $200 and both simplifies the install of after market accessories drastically. Thanks! James

It look kool! Great way to store tools and a battery! I would recommend a dc/dc charge relay/charger. New cars have a new type of alternator and new car have a "can-bus" system. If you just put a battery the system can go in "emergency" mode. So a dc/dc charger is better for new cars/trucks. I learn it the "hard" way.

You’re dual battery wiring setup will work fine. I used 2 40a relays switched by ignition to charge a second battery for years without any issues. However. You still want to run slightly larger diameter cable as you won’t get a great charge with such small cable. I used 6mm/100a and it was fine over a 4m stretch. I also use the same setup to my camper trailer via an Anderson plug. It has 2 x 100ah deep cycles in it and it gets a solid charge on the run.

And I would highly recommend just buying a good quality “used” home panel(that what I did) as like you my Taco is a second choice to my 1st Gen 4rnr. I have since switched racks. lol. You can usually find solar panels on Offer Up or Letgo from a solar reseller. Panels are rated for 25-30 life span but many people in SoCal swap out systems(upgrade panels as Tech improves) 5-7 years some times plus you get a high capacity 200w panel for 35-50 bucks. This panel are great for trucks as they are larger and bolt fright to the slide via drilling a few mounting holes along the box frame of the panel. Thanks for sharing!

@@DirtLifestyle i was curious to this aswell, it will definetly depend on the state of the deep cycle batter and if you equalize it with the truck running or just ignition on, if you drained it acidentally to say 10v and then turned the truck on to 14.4v thered be a rather big difference there and might send alot of current, this never seems to be addressed though even in professionally sold wiring like an aftermarket 7pin plug kit, if the trailer has a battery itd be the same scenario might be a non issue but if it is an issue can grab an automotive breaker and itll allow 10seconds or so of charging before it trips off for 20seconds or so and then untrips to try again until the voltage is close enough it doesnt need to trip off, not really a professional solution but i dont see any issue with it

If you put the heat shrink over the sleeving/joint and then burn the heat shrink, it will pull the expando tight, melt it together, and leave a really nice clean end. Then cut the burnt heat shrink off and just leave the clean expando joint or add another piece of heat shrink and heat appropriately to finish the look. Works great, looks super clean, and no burnt finger tips.

You have inspired me to build a insulated popup trailer and it is way slower going because I don't have a shop and am doing it in the sun. But it is not a bad thing taking the time. I am learning a shit ton of what I like and dislike. The electrical is one big thing I am trying to figure out! Most of it i plan on using s.o. 14gaw 3 I think I can run 12v and 120 if I can get to it.

This one of my favorite channels! Awesome content, I'm pretty new to wheeling/overlanding and your videos are absolutely information rich. I'm building an 04 f350 as a family hauler/ overlander/tow rig many of your videos especially this series has me even more excited to put the time and effort into rebuilding the 6.ohno and getting it back on the road and down some trails! Appreciate the vids subscribed and looking forward to more Thanks for you time!

E6100 is the best epoxy adhesive. Would work perfect for mounting those lights and such. We use it at work in industrial applications on mobile volumetric mixers.

Another good video. I would increase the wire size to that aux battery and go with a bigger more constant duty solenoid over a relay in the case that battery is really drawing off the alternator or vise versa. Police Tahoe’s from the factory use a similar key on solenoid connection the start battery and the six battery. Tyco makes a perfect constant duty sealed solenoid for this.

AWESOME BUILD, Nate! With reference to off road vehicle wiring I'd like to pass along a tip someone shared with me many years ago. I suspect many here (and you) prefer to over-build, like me. As an extra layer of protection, try running any wiring that's outside the vehicle (especially UNDER), try running it through PVC pipe or PEX or even flexible conduit. I've found thiu\is to be invaluable This is especially helpful over long runs of wire.

You can use the reverse light wire on your 7-pin trailer harness for a trigger for your reverse instead of the lights on the truck.

First off, love the videos 👍👍, I use the fuse jumpers all the time, but I found out that there is a right and wrong direction, if installed incorrectly you're gonna be popping the main fuse and your accessory won't work. I know it is just for a signal for the relay. I ended up blowing a lot of fuses before I realized it. Just one small tip I learned, just wanted to pass it along. Again love the videos 👍❤️

your dual battery system is basically a dual battery isolator anyway its pretty much how they work wether voltage sensitive or ignition triggered works he same way. what gauge wire are you using to link the batterys? I think you should probably upgrade that to a bit heavier gauge because if you have a 80 amp or 100 amp alternator it will be pushing a fair bit of current down that small wire if the rear battery is very low

Nate, Great job. Torch soldering looks faster. Might try it. I can see you did your research. 12 AWG wire can carry 20 amps. I will be interested to see if the fuse always blows if your aux battery gets too low. Some way to limit the charge current would be awesome. Unfortunately I am not familiar with that item. The lights are sweet. I need to upgrade the cabin lights in my TJ. They never worked and factory are not good anyway. Great video again bro. Can't wait for the next one!

Nate. I am currently about 5 minutes into this video... Did you know the 7 round "RV" trailer connection has a constant on for charging the emergency battery/using accessories on your trailer? On my 06 Super Duty, it is only hot when the truck is running. I'd just tap into that for your signal and use that to cycle your relay. The wiring is right there. Actually, now that I think about it, there's a wire for reverse lights on a trailer in that plug too... Enjoy SEMA. Sending my buddy Dave from Jeep Kings in Springfield MO to come say hi.

Your truck should have a dedicated circuit to charge trailer batteries on your 7 pin trailer connector (pin #4). It’s only on when your engine is running. And your reverse signal of course would be right there too. On my Ford it's a 30A circuit. You could just splice into the factory harness right under the bed below where the box is.
@alphaboltz

If you want to wire to the reverse light pick up the reverse signal from the 7 way wiring, most trailers don’t have reverse lights anyways

Hey Nate love the work you do keep it up can I suggest you put your clamp meter on your charge wire to see how many amps are going to your second battery it will give you an idea if that cable is big enough also maybe look at a small solar panel to keep it topped up when you are not driving.
@DirtLifestyle

This has been apart of the plan all along. I just need to drain the truck bed battery low enough first 👍
@chrislotus1976
@chrislotus1976 4 года назад
@@DirtLifestyle also I know you are trying to do this cheap but I would suggest using a dc dc charger and 6bs cable from your main battery this will also allow you to connect a solar panel with out a regulator

I just used a simple VSR (Voltage Sensitive Relay) on my rear-mounted battery. I think it is set to cut out supply to the rear battery at 13V. Charging Voltage of the vehicle is about 14.2 from memory. I have a 60A switchable breaker in line also. VSR and breaker are mounted under the bonnet neat the main battery.

Tapping off an existing fuse is a super handy idea. 12v is a mistery to me but these videos are helping me get my head around it. An everything 12v or 12v 101 video would be cool if you haven't already done something like that.
