Backstory on this song..... before hitting it big, when they were an opening act for other bands, like most opening bands they weren't always given time to do a proper sound check, so they they opened with this song, bringing in one instrument at a time, allowing the sound man to adjust each one as it came in.
My first concert was Cheap Trick summer of 1982. I was 13. It was great. Rick brought out his double neck guitar that looked like him. Never knew that guitars could be custom built like that until that night.
The camera editor should be ashamed of himself for cutting away consistently right when Nielsen is doing some of his best leaps and kicks. Makes me sad. :(
When I was a 11 yr old I saw The Cheaps with Kiss at the worst place on earth the swing auditorium in San Bernardino CA the First McDonald's, I saw the bNd probably 28 times., I could have replaced Bunn had I been Givin an audition but I Rick's son has handled the job real good except there's no big sticks or ties or traded drum sets from Montgomery Wards, Nobody can cover the Beatles but Cheap Trick not only covered them but sounded better, to this day.Magical Mystery Tour still rules as the best in my opinion
They sound great. But I always thought that they could have been a waaaay much bigger band if rick nielsen didn't look like a complete idiot all the time. The way he moves, those dumb clothes he used, the silly faces he makes on purpose... I mean, I don't get it and never will. Imagine what would had happen to guns n roses if let's say slash dressed literally as a clown and danced like barney the dinosaur while playing the same songs and solos... Things would had been very different in a bad way lol
+Josh Martins I've said (written, rather) many times, Cheap Trick has to have been one of the most underappreciated bands ever. So unfortunate; bottom line, they were always incredible! (Their talent is obvious - most notably to me, Rick Nielsens guitar abilities: wow! Not to minimize the others, of course, as they all really were ground-breaking; their individual styles, for example, and the fusing of the then 'lame' world of commercialised music with the precursors of punk and new wave... I could go on and on.) Even back in the late 70's as a kid I was bewildered at why hardly any of the other high-schoolers were getting in to them as I did. Its good to see they're still performing though, although its too bad they weren't more sucessful back here in North America as they were overseas.
They didnt reach the heights they should have because of one thing.....the goofball nerd image of the guitarist. Shallow, i know but these things matter to fans. It actually put me off them when i was a teen. I couldnt get past it. Tells you what i was like as a teen but i wasnt alone. Pity.
I saw them open for Kiss in 1977 on the Love Gun tour. At first I thought they were going to be thrown off stage. Then they won us over in dramatic fashion. A year later at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix during the Live At Budokan tour. Then a year after that, in a much larger arena, for Heaven Tonight. I've seen them three times since but 77-79 were the glory days, as they say.
I saw them in 1979. I was 18 years old not a care in the world, my beautiful girlfriend at the time hanging on my arm. I would join the Air Force 7 month later. I can remember the concert like it was yesterday.
When I was a kid I just loved the whole concept behind this song. A fast opening number entitled "Hello There". In my very first band when we were 14 we stole this idea and came up with her own version. Ours was called "What's up". Problem was it went on for at least 7 minutes and not only had a guitar solo in it but a drum solo and a bass solo. Oh and it had time signature changes because we also liked Rush. We wore ourselves out playing it. Totally defeating the whole purpose. LOL
Wow… watched a version of this song from Saginaw Michigan three weeks ago and it is much less energetic! I guess that is to be expected but still it’s just going through the motions
my guess is that the introduction speaker is don kirshner's son. I was thinking "I must be even older than I thought as I remember don as being a middle aged guy, not this young. but on investigation, don looked a lot older, but similar I think. BTW, Cheap Trick is one of my two all time favorite American bands.
Davis Jen It was on a TV show in the 70s. TV hosts were really toned down back then. You should watch the Mike Wallace interview and show with KISS from the 70s. He is really mellow compared to them.
Yes, you are correct, speaking manners were different. More notable to me was that back then interviewers did not speak in a manner similar to how one would speak to small children in the past as is the case on what we call "national news" today. Actually that is not fair, children shows of the past were much more sophisticated than modern national news broadcasts are. But to the point, even at that time, DK was unusually low key, and his son seemed zombie like. Nothing wrong, but I remember my perception from that time.
Mr Intro Guy is the funniest thing I've seen all week. And then 2 minutes of sheer musical awesomeness... it doesn't get any better than this on RU-vid!
I saw them right at the front of the stage around 1980 and the release of Budokan. My ears rang for 3 days, the loudest indoor show of all for me. My 2 mates and i took these tiny wee superpotent stimulants and it was surreal as they were on top of the world right then, geez what a rock band
im sure radio ones dave lee travis had aint that a shame as his record of the week back then.First time i heard cheap trick 'Saw them in 79 at the reading festival best thing there .WHEN YOU WATCH THE RU-vid VID READING FESTIVAL AND ESPECIALY RICKS GUITAR WORK AND ANTICS TRYING TO GET THE QUIET AS A MOUSE AUDIENCE GOING MYSELF NOT INCLUDE
last time I will post on your page I think I mean you were from Milwaukee and Rockford too I think. Here we go- I got some orchids, two plants in the hospital when I got out (Again). I wanted to give my counselor at the time a big, hug but we just shook hands, he was a flyer too, a sort of floater if you will. When I do laundry every week by our machine, the lady down the hall didn't speak English very well. She was still very nice. On Mother's Day she gave me a rose. I consider her my friend too. She lives down the hall. I too tried to give her a plastic orange mum to say thank you but only laid it by her door as a boy dropped off water there. I just should have knocked on the door. I feel bad as I dont see her or the fsamily across the hall. I don't like anyone being prejudice either, as one time long ago I was too and now like the birds I had to let it go. one of my daughter's has a beautiful soul , has many flights, she takesand if I could choose someone well yes I saw him too. He is very beautiful too! But alas it is up to them to make the decision. Love you friend, thank you too as we all have a Rose, a Moon and a Staras a friend. Peace Love Kindness is a start! Denise Contreras a momma with a papa too. thank you
