CHEAP v EXPENSIVE WEDGE TEST!!! Golf Monthly

How much would you be prepared to spend on new wedges? In this video, Neil Tappin tests options from both ends of the price spectrum to see how they compare. He tests the Callaway Jaws MD5 up against an Inesis wedge but what were the differences and how did they both fair?
Your wedges are your scoring clubs and as iron lofts become stronger, players are putting more in the bag. With this in mind, a full set of new wedges can be an expensive investment. As such, we wanted to see how price affects performance... Our cheap v expensive wedge test should shed some important light!

More reviews like this please Neil, it's really interesting and valuable for consumers. It shows how much 'hype' around expensive brands is really just snake oil sales talk.

Thanks for an excellent comparison. I must admit that I am a big fan of Decathlon and use them for a lot of my sporting requirements, their clothing, footwear and equipment is always well designed and tremendous value. There is less choice of Loft & Bounce, but personally, I prefered the simple lines of the Inesis.

Most of my clubs are mid priced products that I bought used, I spent a little extra on an odyssey putter, 2017 Big Bertha hybrids. The only new clubs I have ever purchased are the ping wedges. The glide 3 in 50* and the glide eye2 in 54*. The grips have guide marks for hand positioning when gripping down or opening the face. it helps me hit a few different shot types without having to change my swing, or much else about my setup.

I found a great deal on Callaway MD 4 wedges on Amazon. They are "renewed" and between $50-65 USD each, depending on loft, bounce, L-R hand, etc. They came in a few days ago and they look brand new! Got a 50, 54 and 58 deg for about $160 total. Great deal IMO.

The ball you use , the weight of the club, thickness of the grip and most importantly personal technique have a bigger effect on the shot than the price. Only thing I hate about cheap clubs is the shock on impact. It doesn’t affect my shot but it makes my hand tired much quicker

I spent £200 per wedge on Edel wedges and they were custom fit. Absolute rubbish compared to lesser cost wedges, and rock hard. Now play glide but would certainly give these ago as a second option when I need a low bounce option.

Great review! For the average mid- to high-handicap golfer that lower spin rate on the 50 yard shot won't make a bit of difference...it might actually help in some instances. Definitely worth trying before going all in on the more expensive wedges.

I actually would have liked to see some tests where the wedges were sprayed with water or in completely wet conditions to see if calaway's grove tech gives you any extra spin. Imagine the key difference between an expensive wedge and cheap might be a little durability, but like how well the wedge funnels away dirt and grit. Additionally, the bounce/ sole grind options would be fairly expanded with an expensive wedge.

An excellent upload! The best club for an individual, isn’t necessarily going to be the most expensive, or even the top rated club. The club that’s perfect for you, is the one that fits you correctly (loft, lie, length), that feels the best in your hands and with your swing, and does what you want it to (this isn’t Hogwarts, so no magical clubs here!).

@douglaskoch241
@douglaskoch241 4 года назад
Had a cheaper set of wedges once (not this brand) and they were great when new but I found they wore very quickly. Before long you visually see the face wear and notice a dramatic spin loss. It can be a super cheap way to test different grinds, loft configurations. I'm not sad I bought them but after the experiment went back to buying the "good" ones.

Excellent review Neil, great advert for cheaper range of clubs. Handicaps fall, and scores generally improve when golfers convert that chip into one put range. However, I would ask you to review club performance with balls most golfers use. If a golfers budget is for cheaper brands, would they be playing with £ 3 to 4 balls? On my course with water hazards that could be £40 of lost balls per round😨

I always find it annoying when comparing high price/low price clubs reviewers refer to the less expensive club as "cheap". That term, while meaning less expensive, implies poor quality. Even if the reviewer mentions the quality is not bad, the slur has already been made and noted. To say the less expensive club may not wear as well as big brand club may be true but, in this case you can replace the wedge every year for five years and be money ahead. It appears to me the expensive club gets points in it's favor because of the brand name and pretty glass beads. So, reviewers try to justify why a set of clubs costing $2,000 to $3,000 or more is a good deal while telling the average golfer that they should change their grips every 40 rounds, change wedges every couple of years because of groove wear and you need to change your driver almost every year to maximize your game. I wonder why it's hard to grow the game.
