I’m a big fan of SA Amplitude Grand Slam Intermediate. Probably my favorite line I’ve thrown. It just “feels right.” I also really dig the Cortland Flats Taper and AirFlo Superflo Ridge 2 Flats line. You’re 100% spot on with the higher price lines performing so much better than budget lines. When I first started fly fishing, coming from the spinning tackle world, I couldn’t fathom why line was so expensive. Upgrading from my Rio Mainstream and White River prespooled lines taught me the lesson REAL quick.

In a shop today looking for a line and trying to consider all the versions and options. Some people must like all these choices or they wouldn't produce them, but it made me wish for a simpler world.

I noticed over time that regular cleaning had less negative impact on quality fly line (discoloration, cracks, friction)

As always I love Ben’s reviews.. I would have preferred to see what I’d get if I bought a Maxcatch line vs a top end SA or Rio line. performance wise, although line ID is nice but if I save 50 or more bucks, I’ll label the line myself if it performs the same.

I've used Rio Gold In touch fly line, Orvis double taper lines , and SA Amplitued. They have always outperformed any of the basic maxcatch lines that ship with their reels. However, I just tried the MaxCatch Euro nymph fly line and Big nasty streamer line. Let metell you, the difference is a lot closer in quality than in the past, but it is still not better than name brand lines. Idk how much less performance you'll get, but you'll probably save $80+ by using the max catch lines.

I have been happy with scientific angler MPX, nice for the 80 ish price point, and can be had in sale sometimes. Has loops and the regular ast coating.

When you buy the higher end lines… How do you know which end attaches to your backing?
@manifestgtr
@manifestgtr Год назад
I find I like high end but not *too* high end…for example, the most expensive non-stretch Rio lines can be a bit stiff and unnatural to me. Meanwhile, good ole premier gold hits the sweet spot of “tried and true” yet it still has some good modern features like slick coatings, blah blah blah. To this day, the absolute best pairing I’ve found is premier gold wf4f on an NRX 9’ 3wt. Effortless power and clockwork accuracy…it’ll even turn over small streamers accurately with the right leader.

I like gold as well. Hardy zephrus 5wt with a Rio Gold 4wt is like a lazer.

Airflo Forge is the best for less than 50 bucks! However, hard to find in the U.S. Usually you can find it on sale online in January after Xmas for 30-40 bucks, which is a total steal for this workhorse line. Kelly Galloup loves this line on his Echo Setup.

After years of cheaper lines (Cortland 444) I tried better and was blown away by performance. I have since gone high end for everything. I love SA and Wolff lines a lot. I'm not blasting the Cortland 444 by any means but there is better. It really is true that premium lines improve your experience by quite a bit. I still have many cheaper lines but don't use them much.

Upgrading to a premium line is one of the best ways to optimize performance from an existing setup.

I got some 5/6 fly line from Walmart for $15. I put it on my grandpa's old automatic reel that I restored. I took it out fishing just to try it out. That five six line from Walmart for $15 is total crap. I ended up putting my grandpa's old sixth weight back on the reel that is 50 years old and it casted and worked a thousand times better. When I get the cash I'm going to go out and get a decent line for that old reel. And before you guys dog me about using an automatic reel from back in the day. I've used a couple new reels and I'll tell you what.. that automatic reel is so much fun. Yes it's got its quirks and it's got its downsides, but it also has a lot of upsides and it just looks cool on my rod. That Walmart line, even though it says 5'6, feels more like a 3/4 when casting. You might get 10 to 20 feet out in a very light wind and 25 to 35 ft out when it's dead calm.

Scientific Angler Frequency Boost is some of the best line I've fished and it's $53 at the shop near me. Can't beat it
@larryh9525
@larryh9525 Год назад
Boost is a really good line. However, on gray overcast days, I find that the line is almost impossible for me to see with my sunglasses on (I'm a bit light-sensitive even on gray days). Another good alternative is Rio Avid (it's yellow). The grain weight is a bit heavier but works well in lower light or gray conditions.

The only problem with Rio lines is that they are at the top, or over there stated weight.

🌴Ahhh, wait I’ll ask the fish what fly line they prefer , it all comes down to money , what you can afford, what quality, or how much it will make you feel like a pro or give you status , let’s face it I’ve caught really big fish on Walmart stuff and expensive rigs to , there again it’s what you can afford , here’s an example , some of my friends are fishing saltwater with 5 wt rods ya they play in the hot Florida sun way to much , and of course I wanted to do it to , went to the local flea market and scored a 4-5 wt graphite rod and a Okuma 6 wt reel , the reel had an unknown line on it ,put a leader and casting fly on it , ya it was like casting a broom handle with kite string on it , after talking to a local fly pro , he said put a 6 wt - wtf bone fish line on it ,the 4-5 graphite is stiff, I didn’t think it would be enough to get some action into the rod, I put a 7 wt - wtf line on it it was a $40 dollar Line , the rod and reel were $21 bucks , it now works great ! It all depends on what you can afford , and if it works for your needs.👊🏼👍

Can you guys or someone please discuss mid prices fly lines. Everyone forgers they exist.
@larryh9525
@larryh9525 Год назад
Hi, let me see if I can shed some light on mid-priced lines. From Rio you have Mainstream and from SA you have Air-Cel. Neither have rear loops, casting markers or the more advanced slicker coatings. I have thrown the Air-Cel lines, which are not bad for the money. (I've never used Mainstream). On the SA side, their Frequency lines are very nice at $50-$60. No rear loops, but they do have the AST coating. Like Air-Cel, they are a single-color line. I have used SA's Frequency Boost for years and it is an excellent casting line. On the Rio side, their mid-priced trout line is Avid. Like the SA lines, no rear loops, they also have a slickness agent (Agent-X as memory serves) and are a single color (high vis-yellow). Fishing Boost on a typical gray NE day (or early morning) is tough as the line is the same color as the sky. The head taper and weight on Avid is a bit heavier than Boost, so if the rod you're pairing it to is on the faster side of medium-fast go with Avid. SA has an entire range of lines in the Frequncey family, whereas Rio doesn't group their line the same way. If you hunt around the Trident Blog, Ben has an excellent article on a ton of different freshwater lines.

the most important qualities of any fly line are not welded loops or other gimmicks. but whatever you wanna say.

RIO lines are not it at the moment, unless you want to spend 100$ on something that lasts a month of fishing and then get a new one again. I have no idea whats going on at rio but their longevity went to shit, airflow also has some problems with that for a good while now. Get a scientific anglers line if you want a high quality product that lasts a pretty long time, propably 1-3 years depending on how much you fish. Orvis lines are also fine since SA makes their lines for them.

I used to use Airflo because they use polyurethane rather than pvc, but now that we’ve learned our streams are loaded with PSAs and with the E. Palestine disaster, the Ohio Valley will be permeated with vinyl chloride residue, I guess it doesn’t matter what the fly line coating is made from.

of course a ]buy the more $$$$ fly line... and after 2 years after its pretty much worn out, you can do it again ..or you can get a regular 35$ fly line and save lots of money and catch the same amount of fish.. your choice... oh yeas... but the $1000.00 fly rod and the $400 reel for that trout you are going to catch... the fish wont know.. but all the folks that you fly fish will... my grandfather told me this.. does the fish see that expensive fly rod...no the fish see's the fly..make sure it's a good fly
@stephenbrody2717
@stephenbrody2717 Год назад
Yes if you only fish a few times a year. Your grandfather was right. Just clean and condition it. You will be fine. Now if you are fishing 30 times plus and are fishing multiple applications , streamers, nymph rigs and crazy long dry fly terminal set ups 14ft leaders etc. yes the more expensive lines hold up better and will preform better. I still though put my own shooting head set ups on sone cheaper lines and they fish great.

Big business for Rio, if they emphasize hight quality lines then why also selling cheap versions? To me is the same line with coding hype. A good quality brand product doesn’t need to sell cheap versions of the same stuff. All about monopolization and money🤫🤫🤫🤫
