Just a theory based on opinions about ONE way a haircut can be worth more.

People who want to spend $100 want someone they can trust with their hair and the quality of the time spent there, because they value their time, and they have other stuff to worry about.

As a customer, are there ways we can figure which hairdressers offer the expertise/consultation aspect of the service? I've always explicitly wanted that and when I was younger (like 10+ years ago) I splurged a few times at some fancy places because I assumed they'd help with that. I was trying to encourage them to help me pick but they just kept asking me what I wanted and I'm like I don't know I don't know anything about hair! After that I sort of gave up looking. I assumed it was because I've seen a lot of customers (such as my family members) coming in being super opinionated about what they want/being upset that the haircut isn't exactly what they wanted. Great video btw -- I'm in education -- you do a great job explaining things!

@12:30 ish-- Dude, YES! I'm that guy. Never quite knew what would suit me best based on my face, hair pattern and how to match that to my style. I've been wanting for a very long time to find a haircutter who can offer their expertise. I still haven't found one. And I don't speak hair cutter speak, so it's always a challenge. Anyways, just wanted to raise my hand and say that yes, clients like this exist.

Great video, as well as all your videos I've seen so far. I think basic principle can be applied to most trades and professions that provide some kind of service: skill, hospitality and expertise matter almost everywhere. At least I as a plumber can see it applied to my job. Best wishes for you, hope your channel will grow more and more. It is probably the best hairdresser/barber channel I know.

This channel deserves a lot more subscribers. As a customer I think the skill and the expertise are the most valuable and very hard to find in the place where I live. One would think after seeing lots of head shapes, hair types, hairs style and working with it it'd be easier to recommend a suitable haircut to a customer, but no way😬 I'd rather get a nice haircut and advice in a worse-looking shop, than a mediocre haircut and no expertise in a comfortable and nice-looking shop (I.e. what happens in our small town). Btw what is your opinion on time it takes to cut hair? If the quality of the haircut is the same, is it wrong to do it in a shorter time? I've got an impression that local barbers often take 40min+ for an ordinary haircut, to make it feel more "high class", I guess?

I appreciate your videos a lot, but some unsolicited constructive criticism is that they'd land a lot better if you presented yourself more confidently and with less self-deprecation. If you do that I genuinely think you could go from good to great as a channel.

Great vid man, I believe I hit on all aspects of your diagram other than dressing appropriately, I wear cutoff sleeved tees and shorts & im at $45 a cut! I’m more than likely the most expensive barber in my area, should I go up in price?
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair 2 года назад
Let supply and demand dictate price- if you’re constantly out of appointments and people are asking to be squeezed in, your supply of haircuts isn’t meeting the demand, so you lower the demand by charging more. If you’re comfortably booked, keep offering more and more to your services until you become too tightly booked, then raise prices.

Hospitality goes a long way. There is a lady in town that I have gotten really bad hair cuts from, but she's really nice. Alternatively, there is a place in town that gives good hair cuts... but they act shitty to me when I come in... they literally talk to anyone in the room but me. I don't go to the place that acts shitty to me.

Dear @adnrewdoeshair, Thank you so much for this video. I have learned so much. I am an Asian consumer with straight hair that is especially difficult to style on the sides. I do not have the vocabulary to articulate what I want when asked upon sitting on the chair. I usually ask for a #3 fade on the sides, and then cut the top accordingly to balance accompanied by hand-wavy movements. Over the years, this description has evolved into “make me look like I’m going to tell the news on TV”. At first, I valued the hospitality aspect, but I have been to so many “cool” and “trendy” looking places, but I always end up asking what good is all of this when the person can’t get me the traditional mens haircut I seek? Ultimately, the look of the surroundings seems a waste when that money could have been spent on acquiring or honing their craft. I was so frustrated in one instance that I brought a #16 clipper guard and the haircutter said, “I’m the artist” while refusing it. I wanted to respond, “But, I’m paying you.”, but I held my tongue lest I wanted to endure the results of an angry haircutter for a month. The result from this instance was unsatisfactory.
 I have been to many haircutters who charge between $7 and $100, but in most cases, I’ve been disappointed by the results. They simply cut the sides so short, no hair products will work on my very straight Asian hair. Thus I have been gravitating more to sub $50 haircuts because of my growing dissolution and distrust of the hair cutting industry; there are more unskilled non-experts that look like they’re skilled and are experts (terms from this video). To conclude, the hospitality portion of your diagram is optional because a crappy haircutter will give crappy results whether they cut hair in a posh place or on a sidewalk. I would rather meet a skilled haircutter and get my haircut in a bathroom - and I would be willing to pay for skill and expertise.

For me, I just want a simple, inexpensive and good men’s haircut under $15, plus tip. I don’t need my hair “styled”, don’t need a drink, hot towels, massages, don’t need music, don’t need special hair products, I don’t need a beard trimmed, etc. I just want a decent haircut. In the three towns within my area, I cannot find a simple haircut under $30. Sucks. I am considering going out and buying, some clippers and do my own hair.
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair Год назад
I hope you find that. When I started cutting hair almost twenty years ago there were $15 haircuts on every other corner but I haven’t seen one in a while. Of course, I’m in Southern California, haircuts (and housing, taxes, everything else) tend to be a little steeper here than most of the country. If you do end up buying clippers and doing it yourself, you can get a professional clipper (like the Andis Master) for about a hundred bucks and it should last the rest of your life if you take care of it, clean it, oil it, etc. I imagine a consumer grade clipper wouldn’t be built to the same quality and might end up costing more in the long run by way of time (good clipper cuts it in one or two passes, cheap clipper might take eight) and the longevity of the tool.

If your barber doesn't respond to your text a second time? then? She's been cutting my hair during this whole ordeal until the mask mandates stopped, so I can go back to where she works (closer than where she lives). So I call for an appointment a couple weeks ago and the salon says that they can't get me in until the next day (never happened before) and ah, I couldn't cause I work that day. I'll have a chance to get it cut this Tuesday but I wonder if they'll be able to "get me in." Haven't had a cut in 5 months. It looks ok but it's in my eyes like a kid so it's just not very professional and while I don't giva-f I think it's time for a cut soon. It'll make me less ratty. I've been getting my hair cut at this salon for at least a decade and the Last time I went in there, a customer (old Karen woman) sitting getting hers cut too in the chair next to me told me to put my mask over my nose (which I ain't doin, my body my choice that's where I draw the line and I have to Breathe), so I just ignored her and then MY stylist (not the one who wanted me to get my haircut at her house during all this) at the time repeats what the customer says to pull the mask up over my nose and I lost it and chucked the mask up in the air and said, "This is f'in ridiculous!" and walked out. If she's there on Tuesday then I'll just ignore her, but if she or anymore else gives me any attitude, that's it, I'll have to search for another cutter. I refuse to go to Cost Cutters or Supercuts etc though.

I don’t drink coffee and I don’t go to the barber to get drunk in the middle of the day. I don’t know who came up with this but even if I would drink coffee I can imagine something better than a coffee with my hair swimming in it. Maybe offer your client a coconut with a straw. Something healthy and that he can drink without his hair swimming in it.
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair Год назад
Yeah, hair in the drink sucks. Most of my clients who want a drink consume it while we’re chatting before the haircut, but I suppose most barbers don’t take enough time per client to allow for this. I found a few years ago that if I chat for ten-fifteen minutes before cutting then I tend to do a better (and usually faster) haircut since we’ve already gotten caught up and I’m not chatting as much while working through the haircut.
