This is the only problem I had with this video. YKK is a huge zipper manufacturer and they have different quality levels of zippers. Their zippers are used by jacket makers all over the world. You find YKK zippers on many high quality jackets. I actually have never heard of the two zipper brands that were mentioned in the video as high end zippers.
@@ronpruitt3832 Agree. For quality leather jackets I always look for either YKK or Talon zippers. All my high-end moto leather jackets come with robust YKK zippers, there is a good reason why makers use those. The other two brands of zippers the video talks about I heard of, but were never linked with the top quality leather jackets, they are very common on high-end fashion brands which are unfortunately more about appearance and looks rather than function. Dissing YKK zippers was a big faux pas in this video.
I have never had a problem with YKK zippers. The other issue with this video was the statement “genuine leather and suede are the same thing”. That is completely false.
Suede and “genuine leather are NOT the same thing. Also, YKK zippers are not a sign of a cheap garment of any kind, they are actually quality zippers. Other than that, it was a good video.
@@cosmos1651 Suede is the side of the hide that faces the inner flesh of the cow. It's sanded such as that there is a raised nap on the surface (like tiny hair). Genuine leather just means real leather. In typical mall items, genuine just means the lowest quality leather that qualifies as real leather. But in higher-end quality items that source their leather from the best tanneries such as Horween, genuine = high quality.
I received a Schott Perfecto jacket from my father almost 7 years ago which was too small for him but fit me like a glove. It's been a great 3 season jacket that I've taken with me to all of the Nordic countries and survived multiple winters in Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden. I recently had it taken to a shop for some restoration because I've beat the hell out of it but I can't recommend these jackets enough.
Remember gents, going for used clothes is always an option instead of buying cheap clothes. I know it's a bit harder for men since men just don't sell their used clothes as often but I was an uni student and bought most of my clothes used and rebuilt my wardrobe on a very tight budget after losing weight. It's not uncommon to see stuff being sold for less than 10% of the price of a new one. Most of my dress shirts cost me 1€ / $ each and I just tailored them a bit myself for a good fit
I recently bought a bunch of old used leather jackets off eBay. The problem is it's often difficult to assess wear and tear from photos, so you're taking a gamble, and individual private sellers often don't want to deal with returns. Buying used in person would avoid all that, but then you're limited to a much smaller offering, which is basically a no-go if you have an uncommon body size (as I do, being skinny).
And if you buy used clothing either online or at a store, if in a store, look for a store that is located in a swankier part of town. Rich people donate things for tax write offs all the time and you can pick up high quality item so much cheaper than the off the rack price.
4:13. Bullshit. I bought a biker leather jacket from an old biker guy. The jacket is made from Cowhide, really hard, really heavy, really great quality and it has the haaviest hardware i've ever seen on a jacket. Its YKK.
It all depends on many levels. In my country for example it is well known that store owners like to buy the things super cheap but sell them as top premium items. So paying top price for leathet jacket isnt always a guarantee that it will be durable. I have two of them, one was super expensive, the other was slightly above the med. price range. The second one appeares to be more durable. There is also the style that is available at the store. I remember asking the seller for a typical biker jacket (the one with belt at the waist and sholder epaulettes, rivets etc.) But ended up with different style because of what was available.
YKK is a solid choice for a heavyweight durable leather jacket. It wouldn't make sense to but a slim light zipper on a heavy leather. Also per this video, the jackets you make w J.L. Rocha use cheap polyester lining and have bad stitching are really poor quality lol
When I didn't have much money I used to buy cheap pants, and the zipper would always break. That's embarrassing to be out in public, when your zipper brakes and unzips itself and won't zip closed again. ha ha ha. I stopped buying that brand of pants.
Schott leather jackets are some of the best hands down. I see one of their jackets in the video. Really heavy full grain leather and their hardware is exceptional. No wonder they offer lifetime warranty on hardware.
I've got a really nice, high quality leather jacket that uses a YKK zipper, and plenty of other higher end coats I own use YKK so I can't say I trust the channel after hearing that XD
Good info. It pays to shop and be informed. Ive had several leather jackets for 20 years. Find a quality jacket, put some conditioner and waterproofing on it annually and it will last forever.
Boy, this video didn't say much and still managed to get a lot wrong. YKK produces some of the best zippers in the industry. Check out your highest end technical gear and they will all almost exclusively source from YKK.
The good thing of living in Mexico is that you can have leather clothes for a fraction of the prices of the USA, I mean , you can find genuine leather jackets here even for $70 usd, same with the boots , I have several for this reason , I can’t imagine paying 500-800 usd for a leather jacket …
The baddest "leather" jacket I've ever owned cost like $20 bucks at a "going out of business" sale. It was fake but it's still badass years later and I get more compliments than my legit leather jacket I've had for 20 years.
Nah when I was stupid I bought 150 euro faux leather, it would of lasted longer but I was riding my bike every day and it just gave in one day, of course it was shit plastic.
YKK or (Yoshida Kōgyō Kabushiki gaisha) are actually an amazing Japanese made brand that more luxury brands use than not. Therefore I'd do a bit more research on the company's I was planning to misrepresent... Perhaps not a very reliable source gents
There are very qualitative leather jacket built in internally with polyester. Should not be cotton or whatever to prove its quality. Polyester can be more breathable then cotton!! See the athletic clothes mainly polyester! Anyway thanks
Antonios's Team** .... As soon as they agreed to work for Antonio their freewill was revoked. Everything was stripped away from them. Antonio's really gotta rethink this whole "indentured slave" thing.
As far as I have heard genuine leather is a loose term, it could mean low quality leather or fake leather with some leather mixed into it. Either way it is not recommended.
I have Hugo boss and belstaff leather jackets, Hugo are all lamb very soft and stylish but i have to say if you can pay for calf leather like the belstaff ones those are really forever jackets i called mine my tool jackets
imperfections. Only the finest quality hides make the cut for this category of leather. CE approved armour in the shoulders, elbows and back secure this jacket its CE Level A safety rating and the double layers of quilted leather at the impact zones (shoulder and elbows) add even more abrasion resistance. The leather will also mould to the shape of your body with time, but the accordion stretch leather panelling at the sides will help with movement right away. As with so many of their jackets, Helstons has added a hard to achieve seam-sealed membrane to the Tracker. Together with the inner thermal waistcoat that you can remove as temperatures dictate, this jacket is great at adapting to changeable riding conditions. Black
I have 1 leather over 20yrs. old the pull broke last year right pocket lining torn, [right handed]. My youngest leather 'VERY'' heavy. my parents got it at a Wilsons Leather 5years ago.
The jacket featuring in several videos everyone is asking about is Lusso Leather based on the logo (probably custom). I am incensed at the way they don't respond unless it is about a sponsor's product or about pads on the shoulder. Such self serving hypocrisy from a supposed men's "help" channel :( I have unsubscribed because of this
My bad there was a short video 7 months ago when they did respond with the name of company . Still the particular jacket features on several videos a lot of people ask about it and they don't respond. They could at least refer people to their response under the particular video of 7months ago
I had cheap and have one of quality. Cheap like pu, fake leather, patch leather, etc... last about a year or two. Expensive quality jacket is still with me, soft, pliable, can stretch to some point, have it for like 6 years and still new. Stopped buying jackets every year.
@@Jacob-pk4mc Aero Leathers, Himel Brothers, Schott NYC, Golden Bear, Belstaff (older versions are better as they became more of a fashion brand), Todd Snyder, Baracuta (suede Harrington jackets especially)
My first leather jacket was less than 80 dollars brand new, artisan made here in Mexico, in lambskin, pretty nice, lightweight and supple, or the one i got in winter which is a black pebbled cowhide cafe racer cut from a larger jacket, i bought it used for 30 bucks and i gave the man in the thrift shop a pair of boots (Which i will try to buy if he has a good price...) and a leather coat in exchange, modding it in a specialized leather tailor workshop costed around 70 bucks and it's a jacket that will last decades so... Highly advice on you getting a cowhide or steer / horsehide leather jacket, they're great I am now having made a calfskin jacket, 75 bucks, already paid some of it, gonna pick it up in a couple weeks. Greetings
Great video, very informative, however the video falls short on one aspect. You don't actually tell anyone of good places to purchase quality leather jackets. That would have made the video complete.
I have cheap jacket mainly because I have a rabbit of losing or forgetting my jacket. I don't want to buy a $900 jacket and forget it somewhere. Losing a $30 jacket feels better.
Average leather needed for leather jacket is 35 sqft, average price would be around 150PKR per sqft, which is below 1USD. So that's below 35usd for leather, you can add 6-8 usd for lining and YKK zippers (and people who know anything about leather jackets know YKK is one of the best in market, most people rank it as second best worldwide. This video got it completely wrong when it comes to YKK zippers), buttons etc. Labor in Pakistan is around 600 to 1000 pkr per jacket so that adds another 5 usd. Total cost is 46 to 48 usd for a good quality calf or lamb leather jacket. Cow leather and suede are cheaper, below 70 cents per sqft. Manufacturers normally keep 5usd to 10usd profit per jacket depending on your quantity. And of course if you buy in bulk, cost drop another 5 to 10 usd. You can add in taxes, shipment charges, delivery charges, marketing cost and still still get a really good profit around 70 to 75 usd if you sell around 150 usd. ((: I have two clothing brands, one in Pakistan and other in US, first was in US selling leather jackets online. We also do manufacturing. I personally sell my jackets around 220 to 350 USD in US, UK, Australia, Canada, Europe and 60 to 90 usd in Pakistan. Some people might think my price is really high for international market, well tbh it is but not because I have a lot of profit margin, it's mainly because we only do made to order Jackets in US, we don't keep stock so that costs us a lot in delivery charges, around 80 usd normally to ship from Pakistan to US.
The problem is just that "you GET what you pay for". If you know exactly what size, style, material, dye color etc is perfect to suit you then its worth paying top $. But jackets are so difficult to pick perfectly and you are stuck with what you buy. I have to get affordable jackets because most likely i will only end up actually being satisfied with 1 in 4 that i buy. I say if you want a really good jacket you will need to try on every style in about every size. Then think for a long while on wich style, size and color you actually want before spending good money on 1. Only then will you have any hope of being satisfied with your choice compared with the cost
Totally wrong about the YKK zippers. They're top-notch, thick, durable and stronger than any other brand of zippers, unless your paying thousands upon thousands for a over priced leather jacket. I purchased my biker leather jacket 32 years ago at the age of 18 and it's been through hell but it has that perfect broken-in look, aged very well, strong as the day I purchased it and the stitching is top-notch. It has outlasted everything that I've ever worn since and probably will ever own.
I had got mine for 100$. and the same day I got hit by a car, while having it on if I did not have it on I probably would have died. And the jacket is still in tact and has a great story.
half baked information is worse than NO information !! Definition of top grain is incorrect...In top grain, you skive off the bottom part of full grain, it retains all the beauty and grains on leather. And YKK is good quality zipper...only problem is duplicates
Image search almost any current generic leather jacket on the market, you'll find the EXACT same jacket that varies by hundreds of dollars and most come from Pakistan, most of these companies just stitch their tag on it and jack up the price, 9 times out of 10 this is the case. Claims are made but in actuality youre just getting hosed. The only other option is to find a reputable company who makes in house and buy one off the rack or get one custom made so you know exactly what youre getting and that aint gonna be inexpensive by any means. If they made it they should know the type of leather and the thickness. Fit is everything and a leather jacket either fits you perfectly or it looks absolutely dumpy there is no in between.
VNB-HUB leather jacket company in Pakistan, it's really cheap they don't stand behind the products smells of lighter fluid and that's false advertising from the picture to the product that you get, stay clear
There are not every faux or imitation leather jackets cheap. Anyway; quality is better than leather jackets and without cruelty. Leather jacket is not possible to wash in the machine, while with faux leather it goes easily. I have imitation leather biker jacket, which looks excellent after 2 years and many washing.
Hmmm interesting. I found a jacket that was beautiful and fit well. It says it’s real leather and it was $17 on a second hand site. I still can’t tell if it is considered quality but I do love it and it actually looks good on me!
what if a jacket seems legit and good quality leather around 200 pounds but uses a YKK zipper. Would that be a giveaway that they are cutting corners and is not worth it?
Contrary to what the video says, YKK is actually a decent zipper brand. RiRi is essentially the caddilac of zippers, but a good YKK is strong and robust. It's a mid tier brand (and that's really not a bad thing). You won't find anything better until you're up to around the $600+ range.
I used a plastic jacket as a rain coat for 3 years. it isn't that bad. that way i took care of my real leather jackets, one brown one black that is really all you need for life .
@Dorfunge What brand is your jacket? Funny I used to have Kangaroo leather soccer cleats when I was younger they were apparently the best leather for soccer boots back then but that was 20 years ago
Favorite is probably my biker jacket, but it’s a hard choice. I have many. Racers are great, too, but the one I’m wearing the most atm is my new Peacoat, not leather, I know.
Okay this video is filled with a lot of misinformation. First off suede leather is not genuine leather. Suede is just the underside of the hide or skins. Also top grain leather doesn't equal corrected grain leather. Top grain leather can still have its natural finish unless it's corrected grain when they sand it down an embossed a pattern on it or if they send it and nap it up then it's nubuck leather. Suede isn't automatically the cheapest out of all the leathers. It's plenty of brands that will sell suede for a high cost of money and it still depends on what type of suede it is is it made from goatskin is it Buffalo are cowhide that's what matters. By giving people misinformation is not really helping them with learning how to buy leather jackets
