Thanks for taking time to do all the comparisons. I have a view that of the many things one might do to elevate the listening experience, using expensive/fancy gear to provide a LAN connection to the streamer isn't one of them. I'm guessing for many people their home network is so terrible that actually providing a proper connection is enough to produce some sort of perceived or maybe even a real benefit. Something I'd be interested in is how a wired connection compared to wifi where both were actually working properly using basic equipment bought from the local computer store or off Amazon. You really need to ask why some manufacturers even provide a wifi connection on their streamers if they didn't think is was good enough. I find it hard to imagine that an error correcting protocol transmitting data to equipment that has its own buffers, clocks, oscillators and noise filters cares at all about the data presented to it to the extent it would improve the sound reproduction in a system. Remember too the device is not just receiving data, its acknowledging that its received it, so the notion that a LAN cable is somehow directional is bogus (its bidirectional). You can easily check by turning the cable around and seeing if there is some difference. Maybe ensuring the cable is flat on the ground so the packets don't run faster in one direction or the other. 😉 Another thing worth trying is to provide a fibre to your streamer by placing a media converter at each end. Then you can run it straight from the router no need for a cascaded switch at all, potentially bypassing a whole bunch of drama and then just a short LAN cable from the media converter to the streamer. That kind of destroys the narrative a little, but still might be worth checking out. It could be the next big thing, audiophile optical fibre cables for network connectivity. In thinking about testing one way to consistently test might be a CD version of a track (the truth) and then one presented from your LAN, say a CD quality ripped track from a NAS which will be the same every time. There's no way to know whats going on with anything presented from the internet or even it its the same twice owing to compression or other digital artifacts from the A end. I do agree though, nothing special or expensive is required to provide a network connection to your streaming device. The packets just need to be delivered to the streamer reliably to work properly. The easiest fix of all might just be to optimise your ISP connection and get rid of any dodgy cables. www.fortinet.com/resources/cyberglossary/tcp-ip en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_protocol_suite

Thanks for taking the time to comment. With respect - you are missing the most fundamental point regarding the sound. This has nothing to do with the "error correcting protocol" as you mention above. It has nothing to do with 1' and 0's. If that is what people think or focus on they have completely missed what the real issue is. If one looks up the pedigree of the person who wrote this paper - they will see he has more experience building and designing these networks for the biggest companies than half the internet commentators combined. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0660/6121/files/UpTone-J.Swenson_EtherREGEN_white_paper.pdf?v=1583429386

As for the D-Link DGS-105 Switch, in Europe we always use it with a linear power supply, paying particular attention to the HiFi audio quality power cord and DC cable. In these conditions, the audio results are good, given its price. Thanks for your very interesting video :) Best regards from France.

I find the Netgear GS105 with an IfI 12v Power Supply sounds fantastic. Not thin, not lifeless and better than straight out of the router. I'm in the US and the 105 is just a 5-port version of the GS108 you didn't like. But you MUST not use the supplied power supply - I found a couple of power supplies made a difference but the IfI made a huge difference. I'm running CAT6 into a SOtM SMS 200 ultra neo streamer into a Chord Hugo TT2.

I've been using the TP-Link TL-SG108 for a while, with only 3 feet of blue jean CAT 6a cable from my Synology RT6600ax router to the unit. NO complaints from me. Thanks for the review.

The TP-Link was the second best. It's a decent unit. I did find the D-Link to be more open and smoother sounding. However that was on my system and could be different on yours. The Blue Jeans cable is the best low priced cable there is. It's a steal at that price point.

Happy to have found your channel.... I need help... From where it comes in the wall, do I route telephone cable to the router right next to the streamer (10m) or do i put the router immediately at the wall?, what cable, one or two switches and which, which interconnect from the last switch to my Innuos Zenither MK3 streamer... Then USB to my DDC and DAC, it is the part I have least knowledge of.... Cannot wait for your next review, hope you will also discuss long telephone versus long wifi cables... Thank you!

OK - results may be different for you as the ones I have tested are 120v and yours are 220v. The sound may be different with the different power supplies. HOWEVER, this is what I have found to be highly effective and very cost efficient (here are the links to the USA Amazon site and you can see if they have it on the UK site: I would use this cable (multiple times) to go from the wall to your router into the first switch, out of the first switch into the second switch and out of the second switch. (amzn.to/3hE3vOv). Use the 2' or 3' versions and keep them all by the wall. Then use a longer version to run to your streamer. The reason I recommend this cable is because each cable is tested and they send along a test sheet to prove it really is a Cat 6+ cable. Most of the cables claim to be but are not and are terrible cables. These sound pretty decent. If you can afford it, the Supra Cat 8 cables (Swiss made) are very good and will probably be less expensive for you than for me. Here it is $50 for 1 meter. If you can't afford that cable for them all, then use it to go from the third switch that will next to your streamer to go the 1 meter from the third switch to the streamer. I am about to test some new inexpensive switches tomorrow and can confirm for you then which are the winning switches that are under $50 USD each. I will tell you the BEST sound improvement will come from having two switches by the wall AND plugging them into a power conditioner. I like the Audio Quest 3 which is $299 USD. Doing the two switches at the wall into a power conditioner and one switch by your streamer will give you MUCH BETTER performance than spending $3,000 USD on just one switch - and you will have spent MUCH less money. I will respond tomorrow with the update on the switches for you.

I am in Texas. I think the Supra cable is just "OK". They are a tiny step up from the Blue Jeans Cable and there is no difference between the cables if you are not running multiple switches. I thinks honestly the cable is overrated. I will be having reviews coming up with both more expensive Ethernet cables AND the hand made Paul Pang QUAD Switch ($2,000 USD). Hopefully other companies will want me to review their switches. Anything you can do to help share my vids would be greatly appreciated!

From "There's no Such Thing as Digital: a Conversation With Charles Hansen, Gordon Rankin, and Steve Silberman" by Michael Lavorgna, AudioStream June 24, 2013. Michael Lavorgna: It's common for people to envision and represent a digital signal as a series of 1s and 0s. As such, there's really no room for error, at least according to this binary theory. Is a digital signal simply a series of 1s and 0s? Charlie Hansen: Unfortunately not. The "1"s and "0"s are just abstractions that are easy to think about. But in the real world, something real needs to represent those two abstract states. In modern digital electronics, we have almost universally chosen a voltage above a specific level (that varies from one "family" of electronic parts to another) to represent a "1" and a voltage below a different specific level (that again can vary) to represent a "0". In the real world, those two voltages are not the same, so there is a "grey" zone between the "black" of the "0" and the "white" of the "1". Also, it takes time for the signal to change levels, and the time required to do so can depend on dozens (or even thousands) of other external factors. All of the problems with digital are analog problems.
