Buying the cheapest DIY EV on FB Market Place for just $3000 should we try to build it into a usable EV CAMPER for Offgird Camping? If you know any of the Ford Transit history I'd love to hear from you!

Converted by OZ DIY Electric Vehicles in Springwood ( www.ozdiyelect... ) in early 2020 and looking in much better condition than it does here. In just 4 years the salty air & neglect has taken a toll on this van.
We got the van delivered as a non-driving EV - Full of rust & a traction battery that was under 40 volts *depending on where you read the voltage from and LOTS of questions as to why it's so cheap!
We spent a week slowly charging the battery to get the motor to move, a chunk of research to learn how the car was put together & why exactly it was such a cheap EV Camper build base! hehe

Those exposed singles with the 230VAC on them under the van are a bit of a worry. Can only hope it had a larger box of some type containing it all originally and that had been removed.

How it is now appears to be how it's always been, no extra screw holes could be seen in that area.

Since the video I've learnt something new, to the left of the motor controller is the actual 144v to 12v converter, blue one on the right is actually the 'battery charger' if I'm understanding it correctly

@@HBPowerwall Yeah the Renogy DC-DC will be doing the 12V battery charging. The other box, might be doing 12, might be 24. Those DC-DC chargers come in different input voltages, not sure about Renogy's though (its all badge engineered anyway).

Cool retrofit conversion they did. Kinda weird that they used a batrium system for that BMS. Must have been a very home grown conversion as I am used to seeing BMS units that talk via canbus to the rest of the vehicle even on conversions these days.

I loved that they used Batrium and a very common application back when it was converted. More modern Batrium BMS has been shipped already to update it :)

Hi Pete, you should contact Andy from the offgrid garage. He lives afaik near Brisbane and has many knowledge about lifepo batteries. Imho the batrium balancer is not capable enough for ev usecases

@@HBPowerwall Run less then 3 months, they wanted to charge me for a help phone call, it was a dead wifi on the main module. Won't helpful at all.

That loose connection seemed to turn the orange indicator on the charger meaning the charger thanks the battery is in float even though the battery was low. Could it be that the loose connection meant the batteries weren’t charging at all hence battery low?

not sure, but it's been charging for 3 days now at 200watts from the grid - with the Batrium set to auto to control the current. Battery is at 139v considering the battery we took out and charged is at 19-20v take that away from the 139v puts each cell at about 2.7v (I think... i suck at math lol ) There is also a light on the dash with the same thing from the 240v Charger and it's always worked - maybe it was must me playing with it that made it twig out.. (or dust/dirt/water/crap from the road go into the plug... )

I would recommend cleaning the busbars and battery poles, buy a good tester to test the batteries, they might actually be broken.

In the short term won't be pulling all the batteries out - too much effort, try to charge in place let Batrium take care of the batteries then road test, then get home and check the batrium logs for issues. We have already decided battery will be replaced but would be awesome if this one could be saved.

@@HBPowerwall maybe opt for a neey active balancer, doesn't break the bank and saves a big amount of time, the Batrium can do the watching.otherwise charge by bank with a lifepo4 tester

I will never hide issues with an active balancer - they are a joke on RU-vid promotors.. They don't fix or find battery faults, all they do is make bad batteries more useable for longer...

def clean up the wiring, remove rust and corrosion and repaint. while everything is out you can find that parasite draw.

for sure!! Also an average multimeter - Initially I got a reading of 19v for the entire battery, later in the video with my multimeter it was 40v

EVs can be a rats nest of problems. Plenty of nissan Leafs here for under 3k, but the batteries are all rubbish, even the battery rebuilders gave up on them. Maybe a good ICE might be better investment from a repairability standpoint

I'll give it a good hard crack, issue is van is located 100km away and it's a long drive in a 50 year old Mini lol I might have to buy a more modern car for the trip (do have an MG EV but it's usually used for family use)

Pretty nasty build. Still able to fix it up though. Your going the right way. You can do the cell packs individually too. Without the bms. With a stand alone revive kit GL !

BMS is doing the job perfectly - cell voltages are being charged (better to say controlled) by the bms at a small 0.4 amps - at this point we think we have a single bad cell and i'll be heading down on the weekend to find it (with out taking out all the batteries hopefully) and take it for its first test drive in our ownership.

Time for a good JK BMS with active balancer and settings, indeed talk to Andy, he knows his bit of LifePo4 and the correct BMSes. You could opt to have an external balancer activated, Andy has some info on good Neeeeeey ones which work and are switcheable. Good luck!

@@HBPowerwall not all apples are good apples for a BMS. YMMV for a big LifePO 4 which needs higher active balancing. Look at Andy's videos and it will tell. But these are just my 2cts.
