My Sister-in-law's father runs a Formula V car in the UK. And he says the issue isn't part availability, but part quality. There are so many aftermaket products for the beetle that you can basically build a beetle just using aftermaket parts. However, the quality of the parts are nowhere near as good as VWs. Especially the engine block. He says that he can get a good 4 seasons out of an original block, but can barely get on season out of a reproduction block. It's gotten to be such an issue that the governing body in the UK is considering using the 1.3 Lupo/Polo engines to keep the costs down and the reliability up.

I knew parts were being made, and their prices weren't great, but I didn't know their quality wasn't great either. So my point still stands :/ Using a different engine is a much better idea imho. The suspension also needs to go though lol

@@fillman86 Oh, I wasn't trying to disprove your point. Sorry if it came across that way. And when it comes to the suspension, I think it's just tradition at this point. They will change it one day, but if they did change it now at the same time they've changed the engine, then the old guard would get pissed.

Worth noting that swing arm suspension has a high roll centre which is why it was used on lots of sporty cars, race cars and off road vehicles. One of the few suspension types where you can get the roll centre higher than the CoG which makes it very stable. The wheel tuck issue tends to occur on bumps under hard cornering, with the wheels cambered like the single wheel racer its a reduced issue as on bumps it will go to 0 camber instead of reverse camber.

for the parts, they still make aftermarket forged parts like the cylinders, pistons and crankshaft. Atleast here in the Netherlands

Is it the length of the vehicle that causes it to be unstable? I mean, it has a very square footprint and the jank in the suspension is compounded by it. IDK, just tossing it out there.

Video idea: you know how dual cab utes are so common here in Australia, we have the d series in beamng, why not testing your 3d modelling skills and make new body panels to make it look like one of the common dual cab utes we see in Australia eg. Nissan navara, Mazda BT-50. Just an idea lol

Vast majority of parts in a Formula V engine are aftermarket and still in production, VW parts are not hard to find Also many classic formula racers run a VW gearbox, I worked on a 1982 Van Diemen Formula Ford with a Ford Crossflow mounted to an inverted beetle gearbox with Hurst internals (worth noting Fords of this era were still RWD longitudinal, crossflows are still easy to come by (in UK atleast) and most parts for them are available from Burton Power and other aftermarket companies)

vw parts have been prohibitively expensive here for a long time now. Even shipping them from international sources end up costing a lot. You know what's cheaper? a more modern base eco car :P

@fillman86 Heritage Parts Centre: one of the largest providers of VW engine parts offer free shipping to Australia on smaller items and reasonable rates on heavy items, I've checked the prices and they match those on the UK site... There are also various Australian VW specialists and suppliers with comparable prices to Heritage, which took me only a few minutes of googling to find Not sure why you insist VWs and parts are so hard to find and so expensive there, that doesn't seem to be the case at all? I don't dispute using a more modern car would be cheaper, it would also be less fun, and sound nowhere near as good as a 4 cyl boxer engine and most junior Formula classes are limited to a 1600cc engine most 5 cylinders are 2.0l or more

i believe you replicated the problem the Lamborghini Diablo had. the front suspention is far to narrow compared to the rear and therefore it like to oversteer. simply put it wants to tip over like the ibishu pigion

I do quite like the charrier vivace. I mean its basically a RS3/RSQ3 (but ugly lol) and as an rs3 driver myself that Engine is basically a carbon copy of the 2.5 tfsi in those. 400HP, turbocharged 5 cylinder, 7 speed dct transaxle with on demand front biased-awd. But i gotta disapoint you that these would be a "cheap" swap base. These Engines/drivetrains keep them very costly. you pay 10-15k for a used engine and are very sought after as the tuning potential is insane.

true, but for a built beetle engine isn't too far off, or even in extreme cases even more. Not to mention that the VW engines don't last long, so you're constantly replacing them

it seams to me you have a lot of bumb steer in the rear. and with weight transfer it darts to one side

Q: are the links youve added to hold the rear hubs straight adding bump steer? This would come into play during acceleration and braking too which means your toe angle will be constantly changing?

Might want to look into replacing the front suspension Jbeam with the Rear from the Vivace. The steering that you disabled might still be swaying just because it exists and BeamNG says you can't have nice things.

kinda, but more I think when a car starts getting to be as wide as it is long, problems start. So if the vehicle was longer, I think it would be less of an issue

I think the front suspension is to soft its lunges forwards and then you lose grip on the rear tires

Did you adjust the torque reaction nodes? I felt like it improved rear grip on my mod (ibishu Altair (covet coupe) when I added rwd to it.

those were written in the engine, so the new engine brings in its own torque reactor nodes

just because you have materials in blender doesn't mean they'll all transfer to beamng. All that should go over is just the name of the material. After that, you have the make the materials file in beamng that directs it to the material files you want be sure to clear cache files often too

The car is oversteering af because its too short and the rear is wide and the front is narrow so it just wants to swap ends

short wheelbase? yes. Too narrow on the front? no, otherwise drag cars and the nissan deltawing wouldn't have worked. Another issue was that the front suspension was just too soft, but I didn't think of it at the time. I'm not very competent at suspension tuning :(
