I have a riot mako 10 manufactured March 2021 sold through Bi-Mart under the name Cascade Pro. I’ve watched all the videos on RU-vid and have made a few basic changes that make it perform better for me. First, I replaced the rudder line with a thinner and more flexible cord that makes it a lot easier to deploy and retract the rudder. Secondly I disconnected the rudder steering line (Left the wire cable inside the tubes) and tied the thinner cord to the rudder, routed the cord outside on top the rear sides up to under the seat and tied off with slack in front of seat. Now it is way easier to steer and can make sharper turns on the water with no effort at all! I recommend checking all screws to insure they are tight before initial use. I also used thinner cord to make an anchor trolley that slides easier. Under the seat I keep a dry bag with a towel. I also store the original heavy black line under the seat for use a a tow line. This model came with a chair that allows an additional five inches for the back rest to be moved backwards. I’ve also installed large drain plugs and made them into self draining. Additionally I molded keel guards for front and rear bottom hull protection. FYI, I’m 70 years old, 6’-1” and 225 lbs. and can easily load this light weight kayak. It stays dry inside for me and is very stable!

I may not be the best person to talk on this subject, because I needed to stick w/ the 10 ft out of necessity so am happy because it does what I need & I never considered any other size.

This is the best review of the Mako 12 yet. I've owned mine two years now and really like it. My biggest con would be the prop alignment when taking the drive out of the water. It is hit and miss, trial and error, which can be annoying, especially in dark or murky water. I would add a couple more positives. The yak paddles and tracks very well, and it is very light for car top. I have logged over 6000 miles car top on a small compact car with no issues at all.

Thanks or this; helpful. Would be curious to see a vidbit of the mako being used as a SUP. Looks like it'd do ok as such? I'm thinking about buying either the mako 10 or the Brooklyn 11 to serve as a SUP replacement that I can occasionally pedal, but I wanna be sure o stability.

Great review! I have had my eye on this kayak. What are your thoughts on the give of the plastic? is it very firm or can you easily push the plastic in? I watched a review from Headwaters Kayak when he reviewed a mako 12 knock off from lost creek but was same design and it had a lot of give to it

Fantastic video matey!!! In the UK and seriously considering one of these for sea fishing in Scotland as a first Yak. Just out of curiosity how tall are u??? Im just shy of 6 foot and 13.5 stone have been told that they are a little awkward to paddle for taller guys, but u look super comfy in that??? cheers.

Interesting pedal design, how quiet is compared to others you’ve tried? I’m looking at the new Kaku Zulu hybrid pedal board, & waiting to demo it at a Houston area dealer’s demo day this Spring before purchasing. Great review & video process. Looks like a decent kayak for the money. Thanks.

I think that Zulu is going to be a sweet craft. Tons of ways to rig it. I love that seat. If the pedal drive is even halfway decent I would jump at it. The voodoo is well liked by my friends. Having a pedal drive in basically a voodoo hull would be sweet.

What would happen if you struck an underwater obstruction? Is there a break away, or bumper thingy? Or would it bust the attachment points? Also, how does it paddle without the pedal mechanism installed? I have a WS ATAK and if I take the pod out, the slapping of the water coming up through the hull drives is super loud when I paddle. Thanks for the videos!

There is a plug for the pod area when drive is out. If you hit a rock the drive is pretty durable. It doesn’t have a breakaway, but then again most pedal drives don’t. I hit several and the drive has held up fine. The kayaks paddle pretty well for pedal kayaks. The Riot Mako 12 certainly paddles better than the 10.

Thanks for all of the great videos! Curious what your favorite Bixpy + kayak pairing is so far. In terms of speed, the Bixpy website has a chart that suggest the Viking Profish GT and the Mako 12 both run really fast with the Bixpy (6.5mph and 6.4mph respectively). Are there any other kayak pairings you like as well as those that still go pretty quick?

The Hobie Lynx is pretty awesome with Bixpy. Also 11.5’ iSUPs are pretty fast but you will need the fin adapter such as this one: bixpy.com/slide-lock-fin-j-2-motors/?aff=9

It is pretty stiff mechanism. Didn’t find it popping up. It has uphaul and down haul line.

Either Mako is going to need a kayak cart for most people to transport comfortably. No doubt the Mako 10 is easier, but the 12 is very lightweight and manageable for its size. Nearly every kayak I’ve ever tested has paddle storage. The Makos have bungee paddle holder.

Also I will see if I can get my hands on turbo fin setup for testing. Not sure how it will work or if it will be compatible, but I think it could work. The Lightning kayak doesn’t “currently” offer larger turbo fins.

In Mako 12, is there water standing under the pedals? Would you prefer it to Pelican Catch 130 HD?

zygmunt mily there wasn’t standing water that I noticed in fact it drains water better than most fishing kayaks. For offshore conditions I would feel a lot safer in the Riot Mako 12. For flat water I like the Pelican Catch 130 HD.

@@KayakDIY At my location both boats are priced almost the same. I plan to use the kayak on relatively wide river with very lazy current and on large dam lakes. So I think Pelican would be more suited for me, would you agree? I watch a lot the content you put on yt, but I noticed I wasn't a subscriber -- I am now -- thanks a lot and stay well !

Yes -- The Sportsman's Warehouse Lost Creek Angler is the Mako model. Just got a Angler and the side carry grips in the middle have 'Mako' names on them.

I like the stability and price point but being in the Texas Hill Country our lakes have granite sitting just under the surface. Aside from price this is why I have avoided peddle kayaks. What happens when the drive unit hits a rock? Pops up or likely breaks? Chasing white bass and striper schools when feeding would be far easier with a pedal drive but that means taking it into the rocks where they feed.

Pedal drive likely isn’t a good choice for you. I’ve hit rocks with these kayaks pretty hard and they held up fine. The drive is well made and the kayak plastic hull material has some natural flex so it doesn’t crack. Old Town and Ocean Kayak PDL a be used with drive unlocked in shallows and pop up when hitting obstructions. However, if you are 90% in a rocky shallow environment I would just keep using a paddle kayak with nice paddle.

I like Viking for paddle kayaks. The Pro Fish Reload has tons of useful fishing features. Removable bait well and sonar pod as well as optional chill pod to keep fish iced.

Thanks for the info. I have a lifetime 10 foot kayak I use for fishing the river but that's white water river with calm areas to fish. Takes a beating but handles it. But 10 foot is just a bit small for long distance paddling on our lakes and not a lot of room for what's needed. Will have to look closer at the vikings.

You might want to look into the Pelican Catch Hydryve pedal kayaks. They're only $100-200 more than the Riot kayaks, but they have Hobie style flipper drives. They're not going to do any better if you hit rocks with the drive, but you can fold the flippers up against the hull of the kayak in really shallow water and there's a bump in the hull of the kayak that sort of protects the flippers in this position even if you bottom out. It's not a foolproof solution, but it's probably the best you're going to get. The Hydryve unit doesn't actually lock in place either, so it's really easy to just pull it out of the mount. That's bad if you flip (because you can easily lose your drive in deep water), but it's good for being able to quickly remove the drive.

Maybe slightly more effort, but I got comparable speeds. However, Riot Mako is nice when holding position in current and wind. The instant reverse is useful.

You mentioned that if people were taller or heavier than you that the 10 would be too small, but you didn't say how tall you actually are... so how tall are you? I watched another video where they said that the Riot is much harder to pedal than a hobbie (the reviewer said 3x harder) I would value your opinion on this, could you pedal a Riot 10 all day?

I could pedal a Mako 10 off and on all day. Continuous pedaling all day no. I’ve done 4 miles on flat water with it. Beyond that I would definitely want the Mako 12. Mako 12 just cut a lot smoother through the water and tracked really nice for long distances. The Mako 10 is better for tight areas and did well in the saltwater mangrove tunnels.

Online prices constantly change. I can’t change my videos once uploaded. Look around for Riot dealers. The prices I quoted in video are MSRP....the prices dealers typically charge.
