In this video I walk through my one year review of the Riot Mako 12 Kayak and tell you about some of the pro's and cons.
So far, I love this kayak! Its a great budget minded kayak if you are looking for a pedal kayak. I have owned many brands of kayaks through the years. In fact, to my wife's dismay, I still own three :) This particular kayak has some pros and cons. The big feature that definitely needs attention is the steering mechanism. In one year, I have snapped three steering cables. The company has been very helpful in getting them replaced for me, but in this video I walk you through a modification that I did in order to alleviate the busting cables.
There is nothing like being miles from your launch and having your steering go out. Not fun! Luckily I always have my paddle with me when I go kayak fishing that I can use as a rudder. Smart idea to have it with you.
This modification was done with bicycle cables as well as a rerouting and moving of the exiting cables from the rear of the kayak eliminating the sharp bend causing a lot of the stress and ultimate failure.
In the video I mentioned that I would put a link to the cables I purchased, and here they are: amzn.to/2QV0lrQ
They run about $9.00, but seem to work perfectly. I keep these with me in case I need to pull to shore and do a quick fix to get me back home.
If you have a Riot Mako 12 Kayak and come across a steering issue, I hope this video gets you up and running again. As I mentioned, the company has been very accommodating and helpful in getting me back up and running.
