Might be interesting - im an Aldi die hard and also a candle maker- their candles are just not good , they smell great in store (ie the cold throw is good) but if you light them (hot throw) theyre so disappointing, I bulk bought them a year or two ago and ended up just emptying them and pouring my own… and thats when i started my business - thanks aldi!
Would love if you did a video where you baked something (eg.brownies or cookies) where you buy the most expensive and high quality ingredients and then made the same recipe with the cheapest and see how they compare in taste! I've always wondered this myself and feel like it would make a great video 🥰
As a mum, I prefer to shop at Aldi or Lidl over any of the other supermarkets because there's usually only 1 or 2 options of things and in bigger supermarkets the vast choice can be quite overwhelming with a screaming toddler in the trolley. I like the fact that Aldi is smaller than the bigger supermarkets because I can nip round the whole shop in no time at all and I'm less likely to forget something because I'm visiting every aisle. 🥰
Grace, I worked at Booths during university. They pay their workers only minimum wage despite being the most expensive supermarket in the country. Bullying and 0 hour contracts were just the start. Just a simple Google search of employee feedback will show. My mental health suffered so badly because of Booths and I will never step foot in there again x
That's awful. I'm sorry to hear that. It was also Booths which was selling meat, labelled as British. But was actually a mixture of South America and other parts of Europe.
@@jayp_2023 is it ! never heard of it and I'm from the North East of England I thought it was a spelling mistake I thought he meant boots lol 😂 (the chemist) from smoggy land 🇬🇧
Where I live there is a cheaper supermarket chain that everyone loves. The place is a zoo no matter when you go. I will gladly pay a bit extra to not have to fight my way through the store.
I'd love to see a branded vs most expensive supermarket unbranded vs cheapest supermarket unbranded taste test. I think it would be more interesting than the usual branded vs unbranded videos since these are usually done using the cheapest supermarkets anyway, I'd like to see how a more expensive supermarket compares with them both. It would be great to see papa booth in on the action to see what you both think is better.
Watch "Back in time for tea" it's a show that was on BBC; About having a family live the lives of people from decades past primarily focused around the average and popular diets of that decade.
There *IS* an "Eating like the 80's", I just watched it then started the "70's" and managed to click on or get distracted and went to another site? can't get back. still trying though!!!
My closest supermarket is Waitrose and the yellow labels are HUGE bargains. They technically go off in a day or less but that’s never the case and the quality is really good. I often get several expensive loafs that are yellow sticker and freeze them to last me the next month or two 😂
I lived by a Waitrose during uni and actually it often turned out cheaper. Probably got lucky that the items I needed were on offer a lot! But it’s worth not writing it off completely
exactly the same! waitrose was the only supermarket within walking distance of me and it really wasn't as expensive as people think. maybe because i was veggie and vegetables are a pretty standard price everywhere, but it ended up costing me more to do online food shops - delivery costs and food not lasting as long. fully vouch for this comment
When I mention that I like to buy beer at Waitrose, someone always claims that shopping there is expensive but it isn't really. I can buy a 4-can pack of a good brand of beer for around £5 in Waitrose. In my local convenience store, a single bottle or can goes for around £2.50.
In my opinion comparing Waitrose means pretty much anywhere else wins but comparing to M&S would be interesting simply because M&S don't sell brands, it's all their stuff and we all know it's amazing even if it's pricier haha
I love supermarkets ... whenever I visit another country I must go to supermarkets there. We were on a tour in China and stopped at a pearl "factory," but a huge supermarket was at the other end of the parking lot ... I went into the Pearl place for a little while then escaped to the supermarket. The guide was VERY worried I wasn't going to get back to the van in time (I would've) and came looking for me. I bought a variety of snacks not knowing what most of them were and shared them on the van ... we had a great time (there were only 9 people on the tour, it was great!). In St. Petersburg, Russia we were on a grand tour of the city and one of the stops was a "gift shop" (which, of course gives a kickback to the cruise company we were on - what a lousy selection of cheap souvenirs) and as we loaded back into the bus I saw a supermarket at the corner!!! I was KICKING myself I didn't sneak away!!!!
As an American, calling the little bag of oranges "easy peelers" is amazing. We have a brand here called "Cuties", so I'm sure that would be equally hilarious in reverse. Thanks for the video.
As someone who worked for Waitrose for 2.5 years, but shops predominately in Aldi, I've never been so invested in a video. Fully agree that Aldi lacks variety but in my opinion the prices mean it undeniably wins. Quality is pretty on par as both have items that are fabulous and some that are pretty disappointing.
@@MamaRebelle I shop with ocado for the same reason, I've found I very rarely ever have missing items either with them whereas i used to have a nightmare with other shops before I switched to ocado for most stuff. They are surprisingly competitive on a lot of stuff and knowing it will actually all turn up is a godsend for me. I can't just pop to the shop if something doesn't turn up, I had an asda order where none of the chicken turned up and I've rarely had an order from the other supermarkets where at least something wasn't missing. I do miss some of the quality but cheap waitrose fresh stuff. Since the switch to m&s the meat and veg that is branded m&s has been a bit touch and go for me so I've since just stuck to ocado branded stuff which is pretty great and competitive for most stuff. Definitely have to keep an eye on the prices though as they have of course jumped around a lot for everyone recently.
@@MamaRebelle definitely not I usually spend between 100 125 in Aldi and get 7 to 8 full bags done ocado and was so expensive over 150 for same things and I actually bought less
Surprised Marks & Spencers was not on the list?? It is my favorite place to shop, same prices as sainsburys (sometimes CHEAPER) and the quality is just worlds better than everywhere else. Especially the pre-made meals, 3 single portions of really good readymade pasta is 8 pounds which is well worth it!!! Would love to see you compare m&s ready-meals with sainsbury or tesco!
When I lived in England, Sainsburys was my supermarket of choice, but I did go into Waitrose once or twice and did notice a big difference in the overall ambience. Coming from Australia, I was blown away at the ready meals options and loved a meal deal from any supermarket but I do have to say the fresh produce was really lacking. I absolutely loved going to the Whole Foods near Piccadilly Circus when I was in London and cannot wait to visit the American version and Trader Joe’s in the US.
Booths is definitely worth a visit. I’ve been to the one in Windermere in the Lake District and had such a good shopping experience. The Booths meal deals are also the best I’ve ever had!
Some guy once told me that they had worked in a dessert factory sticking labels on the desserts and the exact same dessert had two different labels, one label was for a cheap supermarket and the other label was for an expensive one. The dessert in the expensive store was nearly double the price of the dessert in the cheap store. P.S. why did you not go shop in your pyjamas? I see people do that in my local Sainsbury’s all the time.
I’ve lived in England over two years now and I still don’t fully understand the supermarket hierarchy. I obviously understand the price things and how some shops excel in certain areas but the breed of certain Waitrose people who would NEVER go to Morrisons or Aldi baffle me. Apparently a bag of white flour is NOT just a bag of flour. 😂
I thought that until i got a bag of m & s flour that seemed like it was full of chalk , it fizzed when you wet it ! Everything came out like a rock. So I only use the fancy branded stuff now.
Yes yes yes you should explore Booths!! And while you're at it, you could take a lovely Lake District holiday AND check out the best motorway services in the UK: Tebay!! Ooh or a road trip going to the best and worst motorway services!!
Grace, I love your videos and they always make me feel cozy and calm. Going through a hard time with weaning my toddler from his milk, and it’s been so lovely to watch your videos at the end of an exhausting day ❤
I worked at Booths for a few years, and they have an agreement with Aldi, whereby they're built right next to each other and share a car park. This means people can buy their essentials and store cupboard bits from Aldi, and fruit/veg/fancies from Booths! It's been going on for years, so clearly successful!
Given your love of supermarkets, Grace, I’m surprised that you don’t have a trolley token on your car keys (so that you don’t need to struggle with a basket when you go to places like Lidl/Aldi)!!! I’m not even sure where you would buy them anymore, but I can vouch for them being super duper useful if you’re going to be supermarket-hopping 😁
Ocado has such a wide variety of products, whenever I venture to a real supermarket I’m shocked how little they offer. Also they partnered with M&S which makes finding fresh organic produce easy. I read recently that while fresh produce in supermarkets usually has plastic packaging, in the long run it actually causes less waste as more produce perishes when the plastic isn’t there. You could always go to a local farm or just remove plastic packaging right away and wash produce to avoid any further contamination of the food.
I must admit when i shop locally it`s usually a Tesco or Sainsburys ,but i really wish there was an actual Ocado Supermarket ,as i`d go there everytime! If you buy anything and aren`t happy with it ,whatever the problem ,they`ll let you keep it and refund the cost.Great customer service too ,as i found out when searching for my (now departed) favourite ben and Jerrys.I wrote/emailed every supermarket i could think of.Some didn`t bother to reply ,the rest couldn`t obtain the flavour. Then ,as a last thought i wrote to Ocado and heard back within days ,from one of their top people. He not only tracked it down in another area ,he then ice packaged enough to keep me happy for months!!:) They`ll always get my vote.
I think Waitrose is quite overrated to be honest. For the price, the quality doesn’t match up, personally. For me M&S is a much better choice in terms of price in comparison to quality. I could shop between there and Lidl only if my budget allowed. Of the big four supermarkets, I think Sainsbury’s is my favourite overall but Morrisons has a great Butchers section.
I used to shop in ASDA every week until somebody said " try aldi's now I go to aldi's every week for my shopping ; because an average trolley full at aldi's for. Me is £80 where in ASDA I was spending £140 for the same sort of stuff ; I do agree aldi's haven't got the range that ASDA have got because the shop is a lot smaller ; so I still have to go in ASDA and spend another £20 to get the bits what aldi's don't have ; but I'm still saving myself an average of £40 a week which is about £2,000 a year 🇬🇧 .
lovely video!! I'm not from England but I love your supermarkets, they're so fun!! Maybe you could put other supermarkets up against each other and rank them? I know you said it's difficult because they all have their pros and cons but it'd be fun to get some more supermarket content
waitrose is so much less expensive than people think, especially in comparison these days to co-op or tescos. idk i find myself surprised by how many things they've kept the same price while the major supermarkets have doubled or tripled prices on basic items in the last year. obviously would not shop there every day, but definitely worth a look
Aldi is really good. A lot of people say their fresh produce doesn’t last long but my salads have lasted 5 days and I think that’s a win! There shower gels are nice and the ice creams the ready made stuff like pizzas aren’t so good in my opinion. Lidls also good but it’s a different vibe.
I work near Waitrose and I love it. When they reduce, you can get some good buys...especially on flowers (as a horticulturist they are my weakness). I nearly fainted before Christmas, staff finished my shop and the manager gave me it for free. Another time I wanted marshmallows to make chocolate top hats, the staff member checked an order that had just come in to see for me, and offered to ring me when they did. They maybe more expensive than ALDI/LIDL, but I find staff super helpful, and somethings I get from them too.
Your comparison didnt really illustrate the quality difference in the goods. Looking closely at the ingredients, a product will taste better if it has more sugar or additives. Hard to compare like for like
Morrison's best for meat and fish (by some distance imo), Waitrose for fruit and specialty items, Lidl/Aldi for cheap stuff, Tesco/Asda for weekly supplies, Home Bargains/B&M for snacks. I feel like the days of doing a 'big shop' are dying out.
unironically saved money shopping at waitrose, gotten double the meat for only 20% more than my local tesco. worked out to me being able to make more meals out of it and saving like £4 on the meat. banger. Though, Lidl is still one of the best, if you've got one with a bakery their freshly baked goods are immaculate. Aldi food has given me terrible diarrhoea too many times I'd like to recount.
Sainsburys still do a meal deal! They've even upped their game and brought out a £5 version where you can get a posh sandwich and possibly a Costa drink too! X
Not really a fan of Waitrose personally but I LOVEEE Aldi! Waitrose's bakery section is nottt the one. Aldi's vegan food and wraps/sandwiches really impress me tho for the prices they are compared to others!!
We have a Booths and an Aldi right next door to each other in our small town, so we have the best of both worlds ... and we make good use of both worlds. 😀
People be hating on the north, but the Booth's supermarket Christmas book is a treat to behold (it's basically a hardback version of a supermarket magazine and it's always full of stuff that you would buy if money wasn't an issue and you had a house that could host 50 people)
Aldi’s ‘Specially Selected’ curries (black labels) are THE best supermarket curries out there and I’ve tried them all. They are not just far, far superior to the other curries but they are on par with many a takeaway curry I’ve had.
Waitrose is far better, there is no comparison to any other supermarket including M&S which are meant to be on par with each other. For example Waitrose cakes are perfect, not too sweet whereas M&S cakes are sickly sweet and tasteless
I noticed that Waitrose's own brand orange juice is £1.80 which is pretty good! I paid £1.75 in Asda yesterday (it was previously £1.25 but has gone up). I do prefer tropicana or innocent but they were around £4 in Asda and I just couldnt justify that.
I love a good supermarket mooch! As someone who lives in the Lakes where Booths is the nearest supermarket, it’s definitely expensive but it’s basically the northern Waitrose as we don’t have those, so I do prefer Aldi but booths meal deal is TOP TIER
Please can you to Tesco vs Asda one day? I’d love to see what difference it makes with the point cards in both shops & what’s better value as I only shop in them two 😊
I used to live in England. Loved the nostalgia I got from watching the Waitrose video. I used to shop there quite a bit. I would do most of my weekly shops at Tesco's or Waitrose, depending on what I needed, then top up at Sainsbury's (didn't have a Superstore Sainsbury's near where I lived).
Wow, I think our supermarkets in Oz stack up well. Even good old Woolies and Coles. I'm curious, does the UK have an equivalent if our IGA's?? They're by far our most expensive but you can go to a supermarket and have gin tastings, there will be fromageries, organic milk that you can fill in your own glass bottles all sourced from local farms?? I'm thinking Hill Street in Tassie and Foodland in SA (which has a weekend pianist playing tunes) 🤣.
I’m amazed with the huge selection of items in Aldi, compared with Aldi here in the States (Midwest)! It’s like a totally different shop! (Which I guess it is, strictly speaking….)
It doesn't matter what time of the day you go to aldi's there's always a queue (unless you go after 8 pm) they must take at least £2,000 a day 😂😅 that's obviously a joke they take more than 2 grand a day " I know
Booths is sooo nice. If you ever get the chance to visit, do! The staff are literally so nice and the produce is really good, some of it isn't even that pricey compared to other supermarkets xx
IE.H.Booth & Co.,Limited, trading as Booths, is a chain of high-end supermarkets in Northern England. Most of its branches are in Lancashire, but there are also branches in Cheshire, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. It has been described as the "Waitrose of the North" by sources such as The Daily Telegraph. We don't have a Booth near us in the North East. GLASSDOOR- Booths a good company to work for? Booths has an overall rating of 3.9 out of 5, based on over 273 reviews left anonymously by employees. 72% of employees would recommend working at Booths to a friend and 62% have a positive outlook for the business. > In 2015, Booths was named Independent Retail Chain of the Year at The Grocer Gold Awards. As of 11 October 2017. In the 2019 Birthday Honours, Booths' executive chairman Edwin J. Booth was appointed CBE "for services to business and to charity".
SHOULD HAVE GONE TO M&S!! Waitrose is literally just the same as other stores, their own food isn't unique. M&S is all uniqie and a step above anything else, it tastes amazing and is actually worth the extra money.
I remember when I was in primary or high school there was a girl that her mum was a bit posh and she always said “I will never shop in Aldi it’s too cheap for me” my parents once saw her and the girl walking out of there and hiding the shopping with Marks and Spencer’s bags to make it look like she never went to Aldi, shocking that people do that ahah
Supermarkets in Australia needs to "up their game" - I lived in the UK for a bit and miss the amount of variety they had. Especially for people with dietary requirements.
Nicely presented, fair assessment of both supermarkets. But! Food is not always about taste & price. For example, frozen chicken breasts at Aldi, same weight and almost identical price at Morrisons, when I cooked them had a really soft mushy texture. On looking at the ingredients I could see that there were five of them and only 85 percent was chicken, the rest was water preservatives and gum to bind it all together. Morrisons however only added water and had a higher chicken content. Also I bought a box of Suet (for dumplings) the Aldi Suet same weight as Morrisons had added flour and a raising agent, why ? Morrison's branded version was just pure Suet ! So Aldi are selling what can only be described as adulterated food with cheaper ingredients incorporated. I contacted Aldi but got no reply, strangely a short while later the ingredients on the chicken breasts changed ? You may like to check this out for yourself, it's important.
so here for loving all supermarkets for their own thing!! VIDEO IDEA: definitely up for an aldi dupes video - 1. metro rolls - subway bread dupe, 2. the garlic & herb & dough ball dip for dominoes/papa johns dips dupe, 2. crisps dupes - pombears, hulahoops, sensations etc, 3. the mcdonalds chicken selects/nuggests dupe! im sure there are many other but those are my fan faves
I'm thinking the Aldi biscuit was a shortcake biscuit, which couldn't really compare with a shortbread biscuit which is made with butter. Aldi do sell shortbread. Maybe have a go at a direct shortbread comparison between the two stores? 😁
One of the main reasons I shop at Waitrose is the quality of the fruit and veg. The two shops near me beside Aldi and Lidl are Asda and Co-op, I’ve constantly had issues with fruit going mouldy within a day of purchase from all of these, every time I get fruit or veg from Waitrose it seems to last at least 4-5 days to a week and the taste is where it should be usually. I feel like if you stick to Waitrose essential stuff where possible for most of the shop it doesn’t cost that much.
F******ck, I've got to stop shopping at Morrisons, they've increased the prices and become a rip-off. This is what happens when private equity buys a supermarket chain 😞:-( I wish Aldi and Lidl did deliveries.
*Grace. Pleeeeease stop saying England when sometimes it should be the UK. You’re parents are teachers aren’t they?! How are you STILL one of those English ppl that do that! It’s such a peeve for the rest of the UK when english ppl do that. And I’ve noticed you do a LOT. Fair enough sometimes you do genuinely mean just ENGLAND. But there’s times when you definitely should be saying England and saying UK. Most educated ppl know this*
Em... so... cheapest supermarket in England, Grackle...? Does this include Scotland, Wales or the north of Ireland ? Is the UK England only ? Please do make your mind up. Em, i suggest not as you have proved. Thankyou.
I'm from the US and what is most notable to me is that grocery stores in general seem to be much more affordable in England than here- even converting to dollars
The wages are different though, I've noticed watching cash stuffing/budgeting videos your salaries seem so high. I'm on 24k and work full time in an office x
If you shop organic, like I do, or simply care more about the quality of the food you're consuming and the welfare of the animals from which animal products are derived, Waitrose is really the only supermarket worth shopping at. And the experience of shopping at a Waitrose is just so relaxing.
If you love the idea of comparing differently priced supermarkets, I think you’d LOVE watching @Barry Lewis’s channel! He and his wife make some awesome-looking food, and they compare “cheap Vs steep” ingredients and then rate which one taste better (they’ve had quite a few surprising results!)
This is a brilliant video little lady 😊 I don’t like to brag but where I live at the moment we have the Aldi where you just shop and go it automatically scans your goods as you pick them …Genius but also creeeeepy….. vey Big Brother is watching you🤓You should do a Fortnum and Mason versus Harrods food shop!
