CHEAT SHOES?! Do HIGH MIDSOLE STACK SHOES artificially IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING? PRIMEX & ALPHAFLY

After lots of miles in both the PrimeX and ALPHAFLY i can conclude they DO lower your perceived effort. As we cheating ourselves in training or even hindering our training progress and potential by using them? Should we wear whatever feels good to us or save them for racing?
Since the 70's people used the Nike Tailwind which you could suggest has assistive technology in the midsole. How is that any different to these new higher stacked midsole shoes?
Does it even matter at a non elite level? This is a discussion piece and as such please ensure you bring an open mind and take on each others views.

Been running with regular daily runners for years. Bought the zoom tempos out of curiosity and ended up crushing my 5k time the first time I ran in them. Definitely provides that responsiveness and bounce that regular runners just don’t have. Ashamed to say I prefer running in these way more. Just feels comfortable and he’ll who doesn’t love running fast?

Interesting topic :) I remember, a few months back, I have discussed with a friend of mine (20 older than me) how many different types of running shoes there are nowadays - difficult to choose. She laughed at me saying that when she was younger and training - they were running in whatever they have and nobody even thought about how many different shoes they should train in. Well.. I guess life was so simple back then lol

Hi Edd, agree that a higher stacked shoe definitely saves the legs for the following day. Also you need to use a shoe in training to see how it feels on race day. Each to their own in my opinion. What works for one won’t necessarily work for another. Running’s all about the journey…👍🏃‍♂️🙌
@EDDBUD

I absolutely agree on those points. Got to test the shoe in training but also as you say if it works, it works.

Great conversation. My rotation includes these higher stack midsole along with classic low stack. So in my view, they’re not artificially improving my runs, but rather allow me to further develop my running by allowing a greater amount of mileage and physiological changes associated with that. While the classi shoe stacks help strengthen my feet and get specific speed development. Without high stack, it would’ve taken me longer to consistently do higher mileage. Therefore my aerobic base wouldn’t be as high as quickly. I don’t think that can be artificial, imo.
@EDDBUD

I think perhaps the advantage comes more from the consistency granted by the foam. 👍🏼

It depends on what works with you best. For years flitting between one shoe and another. I found this channel and others like it to put me on the straight and narrow. I have about 6-7 shoes thanks to senor Bud and his bandidos. - Adios 6 - Energy 3 - Tempo Next% - Metaspeed Sky - Endorphin Pro - Liberate Nitro - Rebel v2 All good, but it was the Endorphin Speed 2 that ‘works’ for me. A shoe that no matter what I do, they are there to get it done. No injuries, hotspots, niggles or discomfort. Just pace up and go - short, long, fast or easy - they work. I PBd in Tempo Next% (not by much) but rarely use them anymore because I sound like one of the Knight’s horses in The Holy Grail :) Great perspective and I wait for the day that the Prime X discount codes work again!

Great discussion and picking up on the 2 main points, if you have fun in them it really doesn’t matter and there is no right or wrong. Every running shoe has polarised opinions and how many times do you get “what running shoe would you recommend”, most people will say the brand they are loyal to or works for them but as we know that is the wrong answer. Anyway I digress, I moved to Alphafly Next % and now use them for training and races (apart from trail naturally, still looking for the ideal trail show). For me I just love the lightness and the shoe works, so I just figure, hell why not use it all the time. Picking up on another comment, I tried the Next Tempo and just fix not get on with them, found them clumpy. Horses for courses as they say. Keep up the great videos.

Here are three shoes from similar tech family with varying levels of assist and protection - adizeroPro, Boston 9 and Takumi Sen 6. adizeroPro is the max cushion and tech of the trio. The assist was most felt at longer distances, uphill and slower paces. But the shoe can scream if need be. Boston 9 is the “Goldie Locks” of the trio with a lower stack and the traditional nylon torsion system (no carbon plates). It runs the same distances as the adizeroPro, but your legs will definitely feel it more… especially on those hills. Takumi Sen 6 is the completely stripped version of the trio. The longer distances will leg your legs and feet fatigued, but you’re on the road for a shorter length of time ‘cos they are so fast. The hills will have their way with you if you fail to keep the pace up. This may be the most objective way to prove out the theory. I know Tim G has many clips on this very subject. He’s fast enough that the differences probably disappear during a 5k, but I’m confident the differences would be very apparent beyond 8k. Cool topic! ✌🏽💙👟

Great waffle, Edd. I love your videos! I would guess some helpful takeaway points would be: 1) Run in shoes that aren't going to illicit injury. 2) Wear shoes that you enjoy running in. 3) Don't get over reliant on one particular pair. 4) Maybe buy a new pair of the same model for race days to give that pep.

Spot on. This fall i ran a 257 marathon in the oj adizero pro. Trained speed sessions and tempos in them as well. This spring will run same marathon in either adios pro 2 or primex. Will train in them as well. End of the day the motto train like you race applys. You still have to put in the work and keep injury free when you hit that starting line. If you prefer those high stack and they work why not. Well done.

All I know is that only being trained for a half, I ran a 4 hr, 7 min 26.2 in vaporflys at 170 lbs and it undoubtedly would have taken over 4.5 hours in anything less. Previous pb was 4:35 9 years ago weighing 160 or less. They also cut 45 seconds to a minute from my 5k time. Crazy technology!

I think they’re definitely racing tools and not fitness tools, they may be increasing efficiency across the board but to train in them exclusively I don’t think will do you any favours. I’ve noticed this with pro triathletes training in daily trainers and using the carbon shoes for races, for example some use the Novablast for daily miles and the Metaspeed Sky for Tempo and races. I haven’t gone into the carbon shoes yet because I don’t think my fitness justifies it at this point, hopefully in the future though.🏃‍♂️🤘😎

At £270 I hadn't ever entertained the idea of owning a pair of Alphafly's. However where the Nike website dropped them down to half price over Christmas I did buy a pair as an impulse buy with the intention of using them as race day shoes for a half marathon in March and a full one in May. I wore them for the first time today and without checking times on my watch managed to maintain my threshold half marathon pace for 10km with minimal effort. I literally didnt realise I was running that fast. There's no doubt whatsover the shoe artificially enhances your abilities. There's no getting away from it, it does feel a bit like cheating.

Lots of people make the mistake that they run in their racing shoe only on race day, yes it will have mental benefit but the muscle and tendons wont have the "muscle memory" and will burn out faster. I personally use the Alphafly for my long runs and sometime threshold runs. I bought a spare for race day, but I will "break it in" as it feels more rigid in my hand. On the performance benefits I wouldnt say it supports slower runners better than elites, it really comes down to person to person. I think there was a guy who tested well trained athletes in different supershoes and Nike Vaporfly/Alphafly and Asics Metaspeed Sky was the best on a controlled treadmill test.

Totally agree Edd I’ve reached a sweet spot with Saucony Endorphin Speed for most of my marathon training workouts - I switched to my marathon shoe once a week for a 6mile LT run using the Fuelcell RC elite 2 - and used them on a 19m long run to be sure. They gave me an invincibility from the technology, and their benefits complimented me, from energy return, to how both made my foot strike improve from the geometry of both shoes.

I did my first ever run in an Alphafly just over a week ago and was also the first time I’d run 10 miles on Tarmac in a while having been doing 5k and 10k trail runs. It felt metronomic running at target pace and I absolutely could have consumed half snickers distance with no issue. My 10 miles time was a PB with a much lover HR. So I want to start out by saying that this is one of the first videos on the internet that I have seen someone talk about shoes of this category from an unbiased perspective. I actually enjoyed hearing your thoughts and opinions about the topic as I think everyone gets the wrong conception of the purpose of this shoe category. From my point of view and my opinion, the reason these type of shoes have came to existence is more so to the fact that athletes are doing more intense sessions now then they ever have in the past. With shoes like these people are able to RECOVER AND SAVE YOUR LEGS from the sessions and able to have more sessions to keep them injury free like you said. (Obviously there’s advancements in Tech but that’s always been a thing in any sport) That’s how I see these types of shoes and I just call them trainers as I train for XC and track as I have no plans to go above 10k anytime soon. Personally I like the Next% s and I feel more relaxed and recovered during and after sessions and that’s what we all want as runners our legs are our lifelines in our running journeys. What I wish people would understand and realize is that there’s nothing “Super” or “Cheating” about them. I would much rather run my 8 mile tempos at 5min mile pace in a shoe with a lot of cushion then a pair of zoom streaks as I know my calf’s are going to feel it the rest of the week if I don’t have that comfort(with intensity still) during sessions. The only thing that’s “Super” about these “super shoes” is the SUPER expensive pricing. There’s nothing controversial about these shoes and the only reason these have come up so much is because it started with Nike and adidas. people need to understand that hoka had this concept long before either of them then would wouldn’t be such “controversy” Sorry for the rant but those are just my thoughts on the video as alot of people around me complain for me using these during sessions as it’s “cheating” to me training. Everyone’s feet and mindset are different and my times have been able to drop a considerable amount because I’m taking recovery and nutrition with upmost importance. Just think of the shoes as trainers, THAT’S ALL they are just shoes. Trust me there’s a difference between putting miles in and feeling relaxed and controlled. REMEMBER FELLOW RUNNERS!!! 1.SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP 2. Heart and Mindset 3.Nutrition 4.Recovery / STRETCHING 5. Sessions

I’m pretty late to the party of plated shoes, I started first with the endorphin speed and it felt special and different to my regular shoes, I didn’t run in it much and savoured it for all that it was, until the pro joined it, this shoe took the game to another level for me, actually in a good way, I have run more in both shoes, working out I got more joy in running in them than savouring them for a special day. That being said I slipped on my old kinvaras the other day and took joy to the precision on tight turns and the feel of the ground. I’ve definitely taken some PB’s with the feeling of ease with the plated shoes, but some of that came from the placebo effect, the shoes felt like something different to what I was used to, I’m in sign me up.

Stack to save injuries and help recover I agree with. Midsoles that propels you forward almost seems like cheating. But to each his own. I run for the fun and the fitness. If it’s something that gets me out there daily and no cause for injury then I like it.

I definitely think the right shoe for you gives you a massive amount of help when running. I've got a few supershoes just now like the Nike Vaporfly Next Percent, the Saucony Pro Plus and Adidas Adios Adizero 2's (my order of speed as well) of which I think the Nike offering is the fastest of the two. I also just received my newly bought Alphafly's the other day and after ripping out the original glued in insole and replacing it with the firmer more arch protecting insole from my Nike Vapormax casual trainers I set out for a fast 5km run and ended up with a new PB of 17:36 in not even perfect conditions, my time before in the Vaporflys was 17:53 so quite a big slice off there. I just find the Alphafly's suit my running really well. I have other shoes like the Brooks Hyperion Elite 2, Skechers Speed Elite and the Saucony Endorphin Speed which just aren't fast enough to complete but which I do still really enjoy running in when not chasing a fast time. I'd say if two people of near equal running speeds and ability were racing and one had a good standard but not top end running shoe with no plate and the other is in the Alpha or Vaporfly's then I think the latter would be the winner nearly every time.

Some good points made here! I’m mainly going through a rotation of Vomero 16 and Tempo Next% and the Tempo is so much easier to run at a fast pace in. You feel like you’re maybe benefitting from the training more towards a race when you wear the Vomeros, or an even chunkier shoe like the Pegasus I wore mainly last year. The Tempo is definitely a more fun shoe to run in though.

Hi Edd, nice topic. My shoe rotation is New Balance Evare 4mm drop for easy recovery, Running Effectiveness (RE) as my Wind Stryd reports 0.96, Puma Electrify Nitro 8 mm drop for Long Runs and some Threshold mix (22-23km, 2h) RE 0.97, Nike Winflo 7, 10 mm drop for Threshold, Interval and Repetition, RE 0.98, Nike Vaporfly Next % (1 and 2) for 5K Race test, 0.98 - 0.99 RE. From Watts point of view most of the Watts I put in NB Evare, then Puma, then Nike Winflo 7 and least in Vaporfly. From the pace perspective is reversed, I am slower with NB Evare, Puma, Nike Winflo 7 and fastest with Vaporfly. I also use some very light Decathlon shoes with 6mm drop with 0.98-0.99 RE but huge Wats difference (auto CP changes from 316 to 331 when using these shoes). I get horrible calves soreness after using these shoes and I just use them only to trails now. On the reversed side using the shoes I mention above give me some knee tingles... so it's clear that now I transitioned from front foot striking to mid foot striking. After using Nike Vaporfly my feet just feel fresh. I think I will buy myself my first Hoka Carbon, an older model, just for that 1mm drop, to use for Repetition in training and maybe 5k. Short answer? Yes, shoes matters, as much I was denying this for more than 3 years training in those Decathlon Shoes that were giving me constant calves soreness and thus preventing from increasing my weekly mileage.

I've been running with the 2 ends of the spectrum, alpha Adios 6. There are different things to enjoy from each shoe so both make me happy. I like feeling the road with the adios 6. It does feel like its trying to guide me have a specific footstrike too. The alpha is damn forgiving on both my body and style. It does make me feel fast and thats fun. I mix it up, just like how I order my eggs, pouched, scrambled and sometimes (today) hard boiled.

Think that you should run some faster training runs 8interval and tempo) and a longrun or two in your race shoe. otherwise it don't makes much sense. I would even go that far to think, that you should first try out a pair in training and run a lot of miles (or kilometers) in it and then get a new pair for race day (but don't forget to brake them in a bit). The running form is quite different in super shoes compared to training shoes.

Asics Tri Noosa 13 has been my speed/ long run shoe for 4 months now. I use the invincible for easy runs. and yeah, even though there certainly are more propulsive shoes, I feel like the Tri Noosa really helps me lock into a pace, and it's light with great energy return! So mostly for speed work, or faster long runs.

I love a nice cushion in my daily training. I think if you are fortunate enough to be under 30 and have no injuries / no medical issues then you could get away with using less cushion daily runner. But I am now past 40 and I am very worried about injuries as it now takes a lot longer to heal. I am of the belief that it doesn't matter what people choose the more people do exercise the healthier people are both physically and mentally, which in turn reduces the strain on our already busy health professionals.

Not a huge fan of the "super shoe". I've never run in a pair so i don't have an opinion from experience but the assist in performance from observation does seem real. I'm like you when it comes to what someone wears, if you like it and want it then go for it. Just make sure you put in the work, because shoes don't run for you, yet. I think there should be races out there that don't allow these "super shoes" just to see what elites can do without the assistance.

To determine if they "artificially" improve running, they need to be compared to running barefoot, which is the undisputed "natural" way to run. So, obviously they improve running. Compared to lessor stack heights? Probably, depending on the distance.

I know what you mean Ed. I love my "unfair advantage" that I get from my Adidas Prime X. That shoe is a true enjoyment to run in, and by far the best long run shoe I ever had. I kind of liken the alphafly and prime x to using an electric motor on a bicycle. Yes you can use one, and it makes your cycling effortless, but I consider running something that requires effort, otherwise what’s the point. Then again I won’t besmirch anyone whose getting out there and running but I do feel like the more cushion and more technology you sink into the shoes the farther away you are from what makes running a rewarding experience because of the challenge of something that you worked for. Ultra cushioned bouncing shoes might be great for others, but I prefer to feel the road a little more with my run. Makes it a much more “in the moment” experience for me.

I find these shoes help me enjoy running, and will prolong my ability to run. When I started back a few years ago I battled injury after injury. So I started strengthening my core. This helped a lot. However, the Alphafly has been a God send for me. I also use the Tempo, and mix in some Endorphin Pro runs just to mix things up. Is this cost effective ? Heck no techno, but I am 62 and don't care. I am running some great times for my age, and loving it. Is it cheating ? I don't think it is even relevant. Still have to train like a maniac to be out there.

A level playing field - the Elite athletes all run in these types of shoes so that nullifies any advantage and for the rest that field is long and tiring. Nike seems to have saturated the market with the next % range and always on sale now. Nikes greed to me has demystified the Alphafly and next % and when you couldn't get it they seemed more magical but now it's meh..I have run in these shoes since they came out and you still hit the limit.. these shoes represent all that is great about innovation but bad in terms of the disparity between rich and poor.. that swoosh has a lot to answer for and why I refuse to wear Nike from here on in.
