I was going to call this one how to grow hydroponic potatoes but I think the process still needs a little work. The pattern of growth was pretty impressive though!
Grow details
Red Norland Potatoes were grown from Home Depot seed potatoes in a Kratky Method Hydroponics setup.
27 Gallon tote from Costco
1/2 inch PVC frame to support Agribon summer fabric
3 inch net cups
I made homemade rock wool croutons by cutting up 1.5 inch Grodan rock wool starter plugs
Plants grew in about 5 hours direct sunlight with afternoon shade February 4th - April 9th
Southern California USDA hardiness zone 10a
Temperatures were mild 60s to high 70s during day, mid 40s or higher at night
Nutrient Recipe - for each gallon water
2g MasterBlend Tomato 4-18-38
2g Calcium Nitrate 15.5-0-0
1g Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate)
Tubers couldn't form properly because they were crammed up in the net cup. Tubers did form on some stems that escaped the cup but those were undersized and suffered from blossom end rot due to weak transpiration. If the potato can be suspended deeper in the container without a restrictive net cup, I think they could grow quite well.
Music is excerpts of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (yes, some of it is... performed by me)
Artwork is The Potato Harvest by Jean-François Millet, 1855 (Walters Art Museum) and The Potato Eaters by Van Gogh, 1885 (Van Gogh Museum)

Yeah I just saw it on Wikipedia and thought it was fitting. I think the people in the painting are simple and wholesome, much like the potato I seek.

Luckily some of your viewers are Dutch and do know the painting. You are not wrong (simpler times), though I think you need to be Irish to really appreciate a potato! Love your experimental spirit and your courage to also show your failures. This challenge is not the boss of you!

*ROFL* Well done. Maybe support the seed potato by placing toothpicks in it so it doesn't fall through the hole. No net pot. No grow medium. Or maybe thin strips of foam as grow medium until the roots get down into the water.
@cassiehodges8050
@cassiehodges8050 7 лет назад
firecloud77- Yeah, kinda like the ol' avocado trick, but maybe using chopsicks in place of toothpicks to help ofset the eventual weight issue. Of course it doesn't solve the problem of how to lower it into the water later, but then again it may not need to if its unconstricted by a net cup. What do ya think, Jeb?
@JebGardener
@JebGardener 7 лет назад
For my second try I considered sticks but it would be a hassle because I need to drop the potato deeper in the container so they can spread out and not go green from sunlight.

My guess is that the potatoes were placed a bit too high up and should have been sitting on the base of the net cup, maybe surrounded by medium (bigger cup?). There is a video - just a compliation of photos of root systems of hydroponically grown potatoes - which you might be able to glean something from. Some of the photos show the underside of the growing "container" - it actually looks like the plant just pokes through some thick polystyrene. There are only a couple at the beginning of the video, then you can jump to about 2:00 to see the other root systems. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PLICoXlV8yk.html

I used coco coir in a net bag...(a gallon paint strainer from home depot.) Hung the bag filled with coir into water. I used both a 5 gallon and a small trash container with a lid. I did it for carrots and potatoes and it worked well. the coir acted as dirt and the suspension into the nutrient solution fed the plants and allowed for them to grow to their maximum size. I absolutely love your videos. Keep em coming....

What about trying to grow the plant till its mid or early stage of growth, then transfer them into a bigger box such as the one in the video without the netting thing? XD Just an idea - My family and I have started trying out hydroponic planting this year and haven't tried potatoes yet
@charleschaplin1500
@charleschaplin1500 2 года назад
cut the bottom out of the baskest and use a mesh drawstring bag to hold the medium. As the roots grow, feed more of the bag into the resivior, and if they grow too large for the bag to contain cut it strategically to release pressure. I haven't tried this myself; but I think it would solve the problem, and might even make harvesting super easy with all the potatoes already in a bag and whatnot.
@stephaniesteinmeyer8723
@stephaniesteinmeyer8723 3 года назад
Did you ever figure this out? I tried growing them in pool noodles in a milk crate suspended above the water medium. I cut the pool noodles into roughly 4 inch sections and dumped them in a milk crate. I burried two seed potatoes in that. Then I suspended the whole milk crate full of noodles and potatoes over a large storage bin. blocked off light at the sides of the bin and added an air stone and pump for good measure. They grew crazy on top, and they got roots but never produced potatoes. So I'm not sure if it was my nutrients. I used Master Blend.

My wife has raised beds with very good soil. Much of it is store bought compost in huge bags of which only two will fit in the bed of my full size pick-up with the tonneau cover over them. She then takes a few store-bought potatoes that we' have had too long and are too soft and ugly to eat and she cuts them into small pieces and buries them in the soil. A couple of months later we have potatoes approximately the size you grew but not one sign of a disease on any of them. Nonetheless, I will never stop watching Jeb's informative, entertaining, and therapeutic videos. She already planted some in January(?) which we harvested and ate about ten weeks later and she has another crop that are probably ready now (it's June now). We happen to garden, like Jeb I believe, in Southern California (Orange, to be specific) which does help immensely. Jeb: Are you related to Chauncey Gardener by any chance? watch?v=TYeVQzTVyLk Because I think Rafael gave him a message to give to me. watch?v=NLuXod8bR0Q Edit: For clarification of who gets the message.

I've seen people grow potatoes in Perlite or Vermiculite also, but you need to use a pump and timer for a flood and drain kind of system. They stacked one five gallon bucket on top of another, and used the top for the potatoes. When new growth would appear in the bottom of the top bucket, he would bury it with the perlite/Vermiculite mix and just keep going until the bucket on top was full. It worked out pretty well actually. You can do a flood and drain system also with out a pump, if you want to just do it manually once or twice a day, you just need to keep it moist in the top bucket.

Jeb I had a great idea that will both suspend your potatoes and leave room for them to grow! Make everything the same EXCEPT drill a few small holes around the large hole you would normally put the net-cup into. Then put the rockwool into a net with the potatoes and suspend them with zip-ties. :) I love your videos and can't wait to see potatoes.

A foam or rockwool puck tightly fitted into a cup with a simple cross in the bottom for support(IOW a net cup with only 4 giant holes, or two crossed wires), and a small hole in the puck to clamp around the stem. I've read some studies that showed benefit to disinfecting the seed both in storage and at planting time. As I recall one was using 100:1 water with 27% hydrogen peroxide, I don't recall the disinfectant pH for sure but 2-3 comes to mind.

Maybe supports inside the storage tore holding the potato in place from underneath instead of suspending it? That way it's free to grow in whatever direction it wants and the tubers won't be restricted to a net cup or similar contraption.

You didn’t need the baskets once the plants were large enough to hold themselves up at the lid. You get them started and then cut the baskets away or at least start by cutting the horizontal bands, leaving only the verticals connect at one center point at the bottom. When the roots get large enough you can cut the connection point and the plant roots can spread out.

Maybe cut out some of grow cup slots and or if you wrap up your frame you can pile up straw as you start to see leaves. Everytime you see leaves pop through pile on more straw. I grow in soil but I stack straw as the leaves get higher, potatoes grow up into straw. Can’t wait to see your results. If you are successful I’m switching!

Bro your video style is awesome. How do you not have 100k subs. Subbed! BTW I work at a home improvement superstore and our seed potatoes sit for 3 months before they are marked down. Buy early in the season and keep in a cool dry area in your own home. You care about them much more than most of the people working at the box store.

Thanks! Good idea on the seed potatoes. I probably can get my own perpetual seed going off my current setup now. I'll even keep a couple extra in case disease wipes out a crop.

Hi Jen, nice video on how can you learn from errors. I would plant them in sterile sand and use a rain gutter system (with a wick). I’ve planted tomatoes that way with a modified wick system and it was awesome. Salute from Venezuela. This way the potatoes would grow and expand in the sand. I’ll try to plant one myself. Right now I’m planting potatoes in a “tire tower” with old tires. I’ll try to post pictures. Keep the work, you’re doing fantastic. Abner

I'd put some kind of screen that wouldn't rust right away, so maybe plastic mesh screen? like 6" below the net cup's normal spot. Then sort of wedge the seed potato up by the net cup with some paperclips or pencils or something, so the new tubers can fall / grow on the lower net in the dark. Have to come back and make sure to stop the light from getting through as things change. Dunno!

I knew that hydroponics was a thing, I even dabbled in it for my science project. But you make it sound so damn frightening.

I would love to see a second try. I saw something in the comments about a net, that could work. And maybe it will be a good idea to try and get the patatoes above "ground", so they won't have a change of getting fungi/mold.
