Check out this must have addition to your #DJI Osmo #Action 3 & 4 cameras... the #Smallrig camera cage!
I found the bundled plastic DJI cage that came with my Action 4 to be severely lacking in.. everything. Picked up this Smallrig camera cage and it's a huge improvement in every way!
NOTE: The pictured and mentioned square looking "mic adapter" does not appear to function with the Action 4 camera. Sorry for the confusion! I ended up just running a usb-c to usb-c cable from the camera to my DJI mic. If you are using something like the Rode Wireless II mic you can also use something like the TRS to usb-c cable. Both of these items are listed under my items list below!

Thank you! Agree, this is a no-brainer upgrade. Just got the Action 4 and felt the included cage had some real limits. Using my wireless mic receiver with this cage is night and day!

Thank you! Definitely top notch. Now I'd be happy if they made a door with a USB c pass through or something so you could have the side of the action 4 door closed but have usb c access without needing to pull full door off lol.

Im definitely going to get the smallrig cage. I have a question about your mic setup, Do you have to have the DJI adapter to plug your rode mic in, or can you plug straight into the camera with a usb from the mic? cheers.

I have been using my DJI mics with the DCJ camera but I'll check how the Rode works with it when I get a chance and will report back :)

Hey, do you think it’s safe to use the dji magnetic mount + smallrig case on a motorcycle or car (in case you used it on your car) ? I’m a bit worried about the strength of the mount when driving/riding

The Smallrig is my favourite cage, but it could be better for £45. Their 1 single coldfoot sits over the mic, so if you add a light you block the mic. Personally, I prefer 2 attachment points and the choice for using the built in mic.

I tried usbc to usbc to my rode pro and it wasn’t working, where did you get that adopter from?

The adapter pictured doesn't work with the action 4 sadly. I ended up having to return it. I run my dji mic directly from.a usb c to usb c. Someone else in the comments mentioned running a usb c to usb c for their action 4 to rode pro without an issue. Maybe it's a bad usb c cable? May want to reply to their comment and see what exact cable they use?

I read in another forum that the rode pro doesn't work, but others like the go i and go ii will.

I have that same usbc mic adapter for the original osmo action and it does not with with the OA4. Can you actually show how yours is working on that setup?

I don't use the adapter.. a usb c to usb c works perfectly. Sadly the mic adapter does not seem to work as you mention. I hadn't had a chance to test the mic adapter until after the video when I was just using it as a prop, lol. Sorry for the confusion. If you do not have a mic like the dji mic that can utilize usb c you can use a trs to usb c adapter which does work.

Thanks. I just canceled my Telesin cage order, which kind of sucks to do that because it's lighter. But it doesn't open on the side for battery changes. I ordered the Smallrig one in place of it. I had a Smallrig for my Action 1, but had to switch to a lighter cage for using a gimbal on it. I'm hoping my lens filters will fit well with the Smallrig cage. Always something huh?

Haha, yep! Kind of a chore to find something with the most pros and least amount of cons. So far the smallrig cage has been great for me. I don't use a gimbal with my action cameras as the built in stabilization seems solid enough for me. I do use a gimbal at times for my Sony though which I also use a smallrig cage on.

@@D3RPZILLA I don't use the gimbal often, I use it for RV tours for better control of viewing ups & downs. However, I can continue to use the AO1 for that purpose. The Smallrig is ordered! Telesin's loss - it worked out as their shipping is slow. Easy Amazon cancelation 😉

@@D3RPZILLA I have 2 gimbals. One I've not used for a long time. Got it years ago before image stabilization became better. The other one is a DJI that I bought for a cheaper action camera. But it works well for my AO1 for RV tours too. I just got the AO3, haven't set it up yet. Debated over it & the 4, decided on the 3.

@@TexCynRVLife nice! I have a DJI gimbal as well but it's pretty hefty and I use it just on occasion with my Sony. The other I just picked up and haven't even set it up yet and it's about half the size so hopefully I'll be more tempted to use it on occasion, lol.

I seen in another video that the usb mic adapter doesn’t work with the action 3 or 4. Has anyone tried using it ? What are the results

Yes, that is correct, the mic adapter does not work with the Action 4... possibly the action 3 I'm not sure as I have not tested with an Action 3. There seems to no longer be a need for an adapter at all as you can simply use a USB C to USB C cable. I just retested it but a USB C to USB C cable from the Action 4 to my Rode Wireless GO II worked perfectly and I was able to record audio through the wireless mic into my Action 4. Just make sure the mic icon pops up at the top of the screen when you have the external mic connected to indicate that the Action 4 is working with the external mic. Also, when using my DJI mic setup I can plug my DJI mic directly into the Action 4 via the DJI Mic USB-C adapter that snaps into the DJI mic. Yes, you can, BUT, it's super loose and can slide right back out of the mount. So, what I do, is I have a small square piece of thick paper (not like cardboard thick, but a little thicker than a regular piece of printer paper) and I slide that into the shoe mount and then slide the DJI mic into place and it stays locked in nice and solid.

Oooo!! I got you... Sorry, I usually have my DJI mic configured with the clip as I typically use it on my Sony a6700 :D So.. I went back and swapped the clip off for the USB-C attachment and plugged it into the Action 4 inside of this SmallRig camera cage and.. it FITS. So yes, the DJI mic can comfortably and fully plug into place in the side USB port :) I snapped a photo of it hooked up, z1lla.com/2024/01/22/dji-osmo-action4-mic-fit/.

O wow.. yeah, that does not sound right at all. Mine is rock solid and zero rattle. Just triple checked lol. Does the door snap into place once you lock it closed and the little button then let u unlock and open the door?

Can you link me the usb c adapter you are using ? I run an external 10,000 Anker battery. I was wondering can I charge and also use the 3.5 jack with the adapter you have for a mic at the same time ?

The mic adapter pictured in the thumbnail no longer works with the Action cameras. I believe it only worked with the Action 1 and 2. I made a note of the adapter in my video description as when I initially took the photo after unboxing the cage I thought that adapter would work and afterwards found it did not :-/ For myself I just use the dji mic usb-c adapter and plug the mic directly into the Action 4. When I use my Rode mic I use a usb-c to TRS cable. See video description for links to everything. Sadly limitations with the Action 4 USB and what it can do regarding charging and utilizing an external mic simultaneously. I did look around and see some "claims" that there are workarounds but I have not tried this myself. If you are tried to charge (with USB-C) and take in a signal from a TRS style audio jack, you can see if something like this would work: amzn.to/3QZZOB6. If you are trying to charge (with USB-C) and take in an audio signal with USB-C as well, you can test and see if this works: amzn.to/44YUTX1. I also saw some mention of maybe an initial delay running the 1st one so they ran the second variation, amzn.to/4bTVdso, with this hooked up as well, amzn.to/3x1mzOe. You could try these out and if they don't work return them perhaps and let us know :D

No good with a gimbal. Better to not buy than to take the camera out of its protective thing to use it.

I hadn't found a need for a gimbal with the action camera... the stability is already outstanding! I do use a gimbal on occasion with my mirrorless camera though :D

@@MU-we8hz It’s more the annoyance of taking it out each time. The Falcon was made for the GoPro media mod, which is a cage, but the DJI mounting adapter makes the whole camera sit too high.

Why Amazon? Why Always Amazon? Their Taking over all the stores. Why not B&H, would that maybe a little better? At least they help you on the phone when you don't know what your buying. Everyone that does a video on camera gear, it's always amazon. But anyways I do appreciate you showing this cage. I bought one. I was on a waiting list when it first came out. But there is still a little problem. The DJI receiver fits sloppy, I wish they would have made the tolerance on their machining a little tighter. Other then that it is perfect. Thanks for the video man!

Thank you! I agree.. the one corner mount is def a little loose so trying to attach my dji mic receiver to it doesn't work out very well. I prob could wedge a little piece of cardboard under it to have it sit a little tighter or something. I usually just use Amazon links as they are easy to link from and super common but I often purchase from B&H and others. B&H is my primary go to for most of my camera/mic/etc type stuff :D
