I love Rick too. He reminds me of my friend 'Cuz' who passed away in 2011. Rick has the same sense of humor and looks just like him. I laugh so much when Rick does his crazy antics!
I used to work in House Keeping for a large hotel chain. The room cleaners had 25 Rooms each to service, this is cleaning the bathroom including the bidet, toilet, bath, floor to ceiling tiles and floor, changing the bed, dusting, polishing, hoovering, checking the lamps and tv works. The contracted hours were 8:30 until 4:30 which is impossible to clean that many rooms in that time and a lot of people went home late daily. It's a very hard job.
RE: Drawer Tampon. Had a coworker who had the personal hygiene of a lab rat who left her used tampons all over the back of the toilet, and on the heater radiator. Worst part: She microwaved a used tampon, left it on the carousel. The day she left that job was a day of celebration.
You guys are my bread and butter. I've rewatched every single one of your videos about three times, lol. Your editing on the urban exploration videos is so good, I keep thinking a high budget TV studio is doing it. Seriously. You deserve millions of subs. Especially with this new series, it's so funny yet dark... it's perfect. Well done man.
My favorite is the dead mall series and abandon buildings and I love the cutting room floor even though me and dan bell don't get along but I still like to watch his videos he had some interesting videos that I could totally agree on
You guys might want to consider ordering shoe covers (like what OR staff wear during surgery) so you don't get any bodily fluids or critter eggs on or in the crevices of your shoes. Also, just a heads up, HIV doesn't survive long outside the host, so if you come into contact (via an open wound or mucus membrane) with bodily fluid from an HIV+ person that has been, say, dried on a needle for 3 days, it is unlikely (not impossible, just very low risk) you would contract HIV. Hepatitis C is a bit different, however, and can survive on a surface for at least a week. You've been wearing gloves, but just remember that little tidbit in case you ever think "well I don't see any obvious pathogenic substance, so I don't need gloves."
They have to watch out for uncapped needles under the blankets and in the pillows too. I'd use tongs or something anytime I am messing with the bed. And as a fellow Baltimorean, having a fear of needles is natural. I lived in the Pigtown neighborhood of Baltimore growing up, and I'd have to constantly look at the ground to avoid stepping on a needle.
For anyone worried about purchasing a bad room know that you have the right to request to inspect the room before you pay. That way you don't have to worry about going back to the desk and demanding a refund or being accused of planting evidence.
Rick really seems to know a lot about bugs, construction and furniture. What does he do? You guys needed hazmat suits in that room. Black mold is rare and mildew can look like it. LOVE your videos.
if a hotel is dirty, that's usually a sign that their workers aren't treated well at all. If the hotel gives you good supplies and ample time to do your job, employees will do well. (I would know)

as someone who used to work as a housekeeper at a well known chain, i can tell you that sometimes things get missed when cleaning because we are given strict timelines to get the rooms done (obviously nothing THIS bad...lol). if one room took longer than another, then the next room has to take less time in order to finish on time - so some dusting may not get done. we hardly ever changed the comforters nor the blanket on the bed - it was inspected and left if it looked ok - the extra blanket was folded and put back on the shelf. all sheets and pillow cases changed, though. anyways, housekeepers have a tonne of rooms to do in a short time. I know to ask for clean blankets from the laundry room when I check in :o)
Sally Cooper Yeah --- I've NEVER seen a maid with a new comforter cart --- I ALWAYS throw the comforter in the corner immediately when I check in to a new room --- and that sucks because most of the time I could sleep just fine without even sleeping underneath sheets/blankets in a hotel and I have a lot of sympathy for maids --- I'd rather leave a minimal impact on any room than turn it into a frat party scene (lol) ...
the disgusting stories i could tell about the condition people leave rooms in... and we didn't get any kind of 'danger' or biohazard pay lol. and again, these are people with $$$ - not the clientele that would use the above... ;o)
Is Rick some kind of health inspector by day? He seems fairly knowledgeable about health and safety stuff. Really enjoying this series, it's amazing how nasty some places are. I think you guys are helping to open up the eyes of your viewers and showing how important it is to do room checks when you travel.
I even do a bed bug check on a cruise ship and some Lysol wipes for door handle, light switches, tv remote, closet pulls, anyplace my hands may touch. Better safe then sorry.
another dirty room is one of my favorite youtube series. what weird is that these videos and your other exploration videos make me really relaxed but engaged.
I think these dirty hotel room videos are really the best thing you've done. These freak me out more than the abandoned houses with crackheads living inside, I think because its actually possible for the average person to accidentally wind up in a nasty hotel like this.
I'm so glad you guys took the time to go more in-depth with this room at the El Rich. I'm also happy that you are taking the advice not to mess with any needles!
Always love your work, Dan. An interesting thing to do for some extra "Check Out Time" content would be collecting "samples" and putting them under one of those cheap microscopes with a video feed on it. I bet you would find some interesting (disgusting) stuff. One of those video feed microscopes would be an interesting piece of kit for the dirty room series in general. Apologies if 20 other people already suggested this.
Re the lock in - you could actually clean the room! When I stay in a hotel, I take cleaning products. I clean all surfaces then put up the Do no Disturb for the duration of my stay. I bring my own pillow and never walk around in bare feet. NEVER drink out of the glass provided. I always upturn the glass over the plughole to stop cacalakas getting in. My husband left the grill off over the corner drain after his shower once and a load of fat dark finger length cacalakas got in. It was like the Kentucky Derby round the edge of the room trying to catch them. Outside a hotel in Paros, Greece, there was official cacalaka racing, with colours painted on the shells of the critters.

Kathleen McDorman Another reason to have needle exchange programs --- IV drug users WANT to use clean needles everytime --- unfortunately, sell of insulin syringes are banned in most places without an insulin prescription --- a lot of IV drug users are forced to reuse their syringes unwillingly against the hell of addiction, thus, this enters the world of syringes with no numbers which were rubbed off from repeated use and bent tips due to puncturing scar tissue (a.k.a. "barbing"/"barbed") which ultimately usually ends up with a mean Hep-A/B/C contraction that poses a public health threat and requires extensive medical care ($$$$$$)
I am diabetic and use 5 needles a day. When i travel i take all my spent needles home and toss them in a locking sharps container. I also bend the needle over after injecting, recap them so if someone ever did find them they are unusable. You could tell the needle in the room had been used many times. The black ink markings were about worn off. I do stay at a five star resort in AZ and they actually have sharps containers in the public restrooms. I don't see that hardly ever.

recently stayed at a town and country inn in san diego. took advice from Dan to look over everything. checked the air conditioner filter and it was caked in who knows what. thanks Dan from saving me from a lung disease!

That stain on the mattress can't possible be blood. It's not the right color. Someone probably just tipped over their boxed wine and flipped the mattress over immediately lol
Instead of expensive chemical to see if is blood get hydrogen peroxide (it's like 97 cents at Walmart) and if it bubbles it is blood as it try's to clean it and get the bacteria out
Here are two interesting Luminal facts I found to keep in mind : 1. it does not indicate the _quantity_ of blood, but only it's _distribution_ over an area, and 2. it should be sprayed _evenly_, or else where it overlaps it will glow more brightly than areas sprayed less heavily. In other words, a brighter glow can give the false appearance that more blood was spilled in one area, and less elsewhere, yet the _opposite_ may actually have been the case. Also, spraying evenly may show more details of the pattern of the spill, and therefore be more accurate. (I'm saying 'spill', but obviously blood can get on surfaces in any number of ways, and can be smeared, etc from one part of a surface to adjacent parts.)
Can't wait for your the next room you find, please try Motel 6 or any Accor Hotel! I worked for them ages ago, and I know some shady stuff went down in those rooms.

I've never seen an insulin syringe in such bad shape. I use mine once (for insulin) barring emergencies and I don't think I've ever used one more than three times even then. They do get dull quickly. The one y'all found had a tarnished needle and badly worn markings... Most places I've lived I can buy 3 or 4 boxes of 100 ($14 or so each) without question; in some places I need a prescription or they won't sell me more than ten or so (helps to show vials of insulin) at a time. I found a brand new penis-shaped vibrator in a motel-room drawer once. That's about the oddest thing ever.
If those needles at "El Rich flophouse" are used for insulin injection, I've got some ocean front property in southern Kentucky I'll make you a great deal on...

You guys need to invest in one of those "grabby" things that people use to reach and pick up things-don't know the name-but like older people use them to pick things up off the ground if your back is 100 years old and you can't bend...this way you aren't even touching anything even with a glove.This room reminded me of Family Guy with the barn animals in the blacklight episode.Love you guys!Feel better Rick!
See, now, I'm scared to death of hotel beds. I don't know why, but I have always been terrified of them. I recently stayed at a nice resort hotel that I've actually been to before. The place was nice and clean. It was wonderful. I cannot sleep on their pillows or use their sheets. I can pull the comforter back and sleep on the bed (for a long time I couldn't do that, either. I tended to sleep in the chairs). But I pack my own pillow and a blanket. I have done this for as long as I can remember.
Just stopping by to say I love your channel and the variety of different kinds of videos you feature. Big fan of Another Dirty Room, Dead Mall Series, and your urban exploration stuff. The additional commentary in Check Out Time and Cutting Room Floor just add to it.
Why is it that the owner or management when confronted try to run away so quickly and deny....if I truly changed the sheets or required my maid service to clean and a customer said there was semen on the bed a needle on the floor, etc....I would be wanting to see what this was about.....but he already knew it was true.
Most motels change their sheets, however the blankets and bedspreads are not. watch the housekeepers...they only remove the sheets while cleaning. bedspreads and blankets are cleaned seasonally
