Check Valve or One Way Valve - Spring Type

A quick look at a cutaway of a spring type check valve for plumbing.
This type can be used in all orientations. Some check valves rely on gravity and those are often limited to 1 or 2 orientations.
This one was loaned to me by a company that I have done work for in the past.

Is this valve effective for pressurized water only? Or can be use only "gravity pressure " from a water tank?

It will work, but it is not good for low pressure systems. Some pressure is lost pushing it open. There is a flapper type which might work better for you.

Exactly! Maybe you know already, early researchers in electricity used water in pipes as the model for how they thought of electrical flow.

I think you should comment on how to replace the valve when it is worn, I assume the body unscrews apart. Also why is everything made of plastic now, wouldn't a metal valve be better.

Unfortunately the companies that make these don't sell spare parts, however a good quality part usually lasts for decades.

You could change the spring. Or add a brass / stainless screw to increase tension, but those are rather advanced things.

i have install water pump to increase water pressure in my house..the water pump effect kinda delay as the pressure built up..will this retain pressure if i install this valve after the water pump?(so the pressure retain normal as it had increased as my water pump doesnt have one way valve)

I am not a plumber, but I have seen these installed before and after the pump. Not sure which is better. My water pump has a non-return valve on the inlet (Hitachi).

Can you remove the spring completely (in a vertical setup) so water pressure closes it and gravity opens it again

There is already a flapper type that works on gravity and takes away very little water pressure. BTW, the spring is not strong, just enough to nudge it closed.

What's the hole for in the centre of the valve body ?

@@pgtips9236 This is a product that was cut and mounted to demonstrate. That hole in the back is where it is to be screwed to a display board.

There is not much to repair inside and I do not think most companies sell the parts. But in theory you could probably take it apart and replace the internal parts. Oh, and you would have to regrind the brass valve seat.

Depends on the brand and how much/hard it is opened and closed. A good one can last 10 to 20 years easily. The rubber seal is the typical failure point.

No, these are for water. I'd not use them for anything else, especially something flammable.

It probably would work at low pressures, but there are specially made air valves that would be better and more reliable.

Not really. It will not handle high pressures like that. It is best to use an air-rated valve.

Water flows in the direction of the arrow. Away from pump out. Towards pump in.

It can be cleaned, but if the rubber seal is broken or worn, the cleaning won't stop it from leaking backwards.

It would release at a low pressure. It would be better to use an adjustable relief valve.

You should only use parts certified for use with oil. This one is not.

I think it would work if there was no big particles. It might have some reverse leakage. There's another style that might also work for you, it's a flapper type, but because it works with gravity it has to be oriented horizontally.

One thing I don't understand about check valves, I see them mostly made of plastic. Will that be strong enough for high pressure plumbing system of 1000kPa? Plastic? Really?

That's 145 psi. I don't know what they are rated for, but I don't think I'd use them.

@@thelogician1934 I've never lived in a house with those pressures. I think 45 psi is the max I've seen. That's about a third of 1000 k pascals.

@@tsbrownie 1000kpa will happen will you heat up a hot water cylinder and due to thermal expansion but as soon as the tap is open, the pressure goes down to normal level like 300 Kpa.
