Check washing scams on the rise on Long Island

Authorities on Long Island say they've noticed a major increase in so-called 'check-washing' scams, where thieves steal envelopes with checks inside from mailboxes and forge fake information on them to steal the money.

Most people pay online. If you have to write a check; there are pens that have special ink which can't be washed, such as the Uniball Signo 207.

I think some employees who work inside the post offices are doing it too. I put a check in the box inside of a post office and the company never received it. Now I pay everything online.

a few things you can do to prevent check washing, use a Uni-ball 207 pen, and go to the post office to mail your letters that contain checks- or use a pay apps on your smart phone and stop using checks all together.

Yes, I saw on another RU-vid video talking about check washing, and mentioned about uniball 207, so I purchased uniball 207, then later, purchased 207 plus, and 307 from amazon. It's smudge resistant as well, great pens

@@IngefromGraz They are, I moved my PO Box from BK to Long Island and I’ve noticed some phishing being done with the credit card mailings already. Quite concerning. A lot of elderly who are getting taken advantage of 😡

Wow imagine being ripped off by other thieves besides those collecting your taxes? No one should have to pay so much taxes to live in their home to a point they can become homeless if they get hurt on the job and only get Social Security. Yes that can be anyone of the homeowners in Long Island at any given time.

Didint Frank Abegnale already taught us about checks and the feds. This is the bank's fault not their clients. Also cashing checks requires valid IDs and could definitely Identify the withdrawer as you cant cover your face in the bank.

banks need to have personal numbers to id checks. perhaps a three digit number, with an alternate. on large checks they need to be verified, with the number and a call to the owner for verification. they are both personal and can be changed at any time by the check owner. the second number is a secondary to verify the check writer.

they are taking out all the blue mail boxes in my area (calif) so you have to take inside post office...also they the scammers tape a plastic bag on the inside of the box and the mail drops right in...

Who keeps thousands of dollars in their checking account? Use more accounts with different amounts of funds. Take only one checkbook and one debit card dedicated to one account for checking.

YOUR money pays for the check. Possibly the cashier's check will be harder to alter.

@@CrimeinNYCity You don't know how it works. With a cashier check, the bank itself guarantees the funds from the bank's own account rather than your personal account. Since the bank stands behind the check, it is a safer form of payment than one coming from a personal bank account. If any money is lost its on the bank. Of course you have to pay for it.

this is absurd. and handy the mail to a postal employee isn't going to guarantee it is not stolen. Use the Uniball 207 anti fraud pen when writing checks (it cannot be washed).

Lots of people do. It was quite common when the mail was safe. Today you can't put a check or anything in the mail without fear of someone stealing it. Also, pretty sad that you blame the victim and not the thief.
